Objective:
The objective of this computational assignment is to analyze the stability conditions of a
cantilever retaining wall using the factor of safety. Three critical stability conditions will be
examined: sliding stability, overturning stability, and bearing capacity.
Problem statement:
Consider a cantilever retaining wall with the following characteristics:
1. Wall height (H): 5 meters
2. Retained soil unit weight (γ): 18 kN/m³.
3. Bearing capacity of the soil (qu): 500 kN/m³
4. The backfill section of the wall is sloped at anangle
5. Coefficient of friction between concrete and soil 𝜇 = 0.49
6. Friction angle of soil (φ'): 20 degrees
7. Footing base width (B): 2 meters
Task:
1. Produce a drawing for the retaining given the following: (8 marks)
a. Depth of footing: H/10
b. Top of step: 350 mm
c. Bottom of stem: H/10
d. Toe: H/9
2. Sliding Stability analysis (10 marks)
a. Calculate the factor of safety against sliding using the following formula.
𝐹
𝐹𝑆 =
𝑃
3. Overturning Stability analysis (10 marks)
a. Calculate the factor of safety against sliding using the following formula.
𝑀
𝐹𝑆 =
𝑀
4. Bearing capacity analysis (10 marks)
a. Calculate the factor of safety against sliding using the following formula.
𝑞
𝐹𝑆 =
𝑓
Results: (7 marks)
Present the results of the computational report and interpretations for each stability
condition. Discuss the significance of the obtained factor of safety values and provide
recommendations for improving stability if necessary. (DO NOT REDESIGN IF FAILED)
