smallest 8-dlglt number. It 1s read as one crore.
In the previous class, we learnt about different periods and
place values In the number system. Now, we shall extend this
concept beyond six digits. The place to the left of lakhs Is read as
ten lakh and one place to the left often lakhs is read as one crore.

Ascending Order
1

When numbers are arranged in the order of the smallest to the large.st, they are in
as,endlng order.

Example. Arrange n,64,645, 27,36,389, 64,53,927 .and 1,08,74,739 ln ascending

order.

Here, three numbers are 7-dlgit numbers and one number is an 8-digit
number. So, the 8-digit number will be the largest number.
Now, compare the digits with the highest place value among the other
three numbers. Clearly, 2 < 6 < 7,

Thus, the ascending order is 27,361389 < 64,53,927 <. n,64,645 < 1,08,74,739.
Descend ing Order t th ey are In
When numbers are arranged In the order of the largest to the smalleS ,
descending order.
Example: Arrange 78,68.974, 73,43,638, 73,42,903 and 79,55,822 In the descending
order.
All the numbers are 7-digit numbers. For all the numbers, the digit at the
highest place value Is also the same, that Is, 7.
So, compare the diglts at the next place value.
One number has 8, two numbers have 3 and one number has 9 as the next
digit. Clearly, 9 > 8 > 3.
Hence, 79,SS,822 ts the large-st number and 78,68,974 Is the second
largest number.
Now, let us compare 73,43,638 and 73,42,903.
In this case, the three leftmost digits are same. Compare the fourth digit
from the left. Clearly, 3 > 2. Hence, 73,43,638 > 73,42,903
Thus, the descending order Is 79,SS,822 > 78,68,974 > 73,43,638 > 73,42,903.

!
f OR Ml NG NUMBERS
To form the largest number from the given digits, arrange the digits in the descending
order.
Example· Form the largest 7-diglt number using the digits 2, 8, 6, 1, 3, 7 and S.
Arrange the digits in descending order.
8>7>6>5>3>2>1
Thus, the largest number that can be formed using the given digits is 87,6S,321.

To form the smallest number from the given digits, arrange the digits in the ascending
order.
Example. Form the smallest 8-dlgit number using the dfglts 0, 5, 1, 7, 2, 4, 3 and 8.
Arrange the digits in ascending order.
0<1<2<3<4<5<7<8
The leftmost digit of a number cannot be zero. So, we put zero In the
second position.
Thus, the smallest 8-dlgit number that can be formed is 1,02,34,S78.
Games and Puzzles 9 :==.'--"':
Objective: To reiterate the place value of a digit in a number.
Materials required: Number cards with digits from Oto 9 written on them,
place value chart for 8 digit numbers.
Method: Divide the class Into groups of eight. Give each group a place value
chart
Put all the number cards face down on a table. One person from the first group
comes and picks up a card and then sees the digit that Is written on that card.
He/She then places it In the place value chart, at any place but keeping In mind
that they have to form the largest possible number with the digits they pick up.

Then the second person picks up a card and

places It in the place value chart, then the
third person picks up a digit and places 1t In
the place value chart, and so on. In t his way,
they form a 8-diglt number.

INTERNATIONAL SYSTE M OF NUMERATION

So far; we have learnt about the Indian or Hindu-Arabic system of numeration.

let us learn about another system of numeration called the international system
of numeration.
The international s,;stem has three places for every period. The place value chart for
the international system of numeration is as follows:

In the international system, 2572131 is written as 2,572,131.

It is read as: Two milllon five hundred seventy-two thousand one hundred thirty-one.
Now, consl der the number 51823457. It Is written as 51,823,457.

It is read as: Fifty-one million eight hundred twenty-three thousand four hundred

subtracted from the larger numeral Just after It.

E11ample XIX Is 10 + (10 - 1) = 19 but not 11 + 10 = 21.

XXIV ts 10 + 10 + (5 -1) = 24 but not 10 + 11 + 5 = 26.

Add ing Roman Numerals

Example Add CLXVIII and XXV and write th e answer In Roman numerals.

CLXVlll = 100 + 50 + 10 + 8 = 168

XXV =10 + 10 + 5 =25
Hence, CLXVIII + XXV = 168 + 25 = 193 = CXCIII (Since, !gg + 29,+ ~
C XC 111

Subtracting Roman Numerals

Example: Subtract CC\/ from DCXC and write the answer in Roman numerals.

CC\/ = 100 + 100 + 5 = 205

DCXC = 500 + 100 + (100 - 10) = 500 + 100 + 90 = 690

Hence, DCXC - CC\/ = 690 - 205 = 485 = CDLXXXV
