walk the journey with us

You may know very little about ConversaSpain now, even though the name has
some hints to it. However, where do we come from? ConversaSpain is a brand of
Multilingual Education Development & Support that cooperates with the Regional
Education Authority of the Community of Madrid, the Region of Murcia, the
Community of Castilla-La Mancha, and the Community of Castilla y León to
incorporate Auxiliares de Conversación (Language Assistants) in public schools
in those regions. It was born because we believe experiencing a cultural exchange
shapes people: not only our auxiliares but also Spanish schools and their students.

Where we come from is not as important as where we want to get to,

though. Our mission is to bring a life-changing opportunity to proficient
English speakers who are willing to collaborate at schools and eager to
experience first-hand the Spanish culture, lifestyle, and language.
Therefore, we create a community of language, education, and travel
lovers willing to give and receive. We help you navigate the bureaucratic
system, boost your teaching skills, and build a social network to make
your journey unforgettable.

We know. Everybody has taken a journey. Even those who have not traveled
yet. Life can change in so many ways by becoming part of something,
overcoming challenges, or making a positive impact on others. Those
journeys took you to where you are right now. And we want to take you to the
next step by walking this journey with you.

THE CONVERSASPAIN
EXPERIENCE
The ConversaSpain Experience, More than a
Teach English in Spain Program
Moving abroad: exciting but challenging. We always feel a bit afraid of new things or
changes. And that is when families walk in. Families share fears, doubts, and excitement.
With us, you will have a new family here. From the moment you join the program, you will be
one of us. You are so ready to become part of ConversaSpain, we know. But hold on tight!
There is more to it.

PRE-DEPARTURE SERVICES: PUTTING THE “S” TO PAIN

We know you cannot wait to meet other ConversaSpainers in person, but
there are some things to get in order first. Think of it as a bucket list and get
prepared to check all the boxes with us! And, as Alice in Wonderland said,
even though you might get a little (bureau) crazy, all the best people are. And
we will be there through the process. Next stop: Spain.

BIENVENIDO A ESPAÑA: IN-SPAIN SUPPORT

And here it is. ¡Olé! Your new journey has just begun! And we cannot be
more excited for you. In the beginning, things can seem harder than ever,
we know. But having someone here makes the process easier and we won’t
just get to meet you but help you with the “what do I do now” moments once
you get here. ¡Bienvenido/a!

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE… OR NOT!

You probably do not want to think about it now… but in May/June, you will
have to say your goodbyes. Always remember that, if it gets hard to do so, it
is because there is something worth missing! ¡Hasta pronto!... Or not! With
ConversaSpain, you can stay for another year! But no matter if you renew or
you are ready to go back home, you will always be part of ConversaSpain and
your students’ lives. ¡Gracias!

Are you ready to begin the journey? Let’s check out the
requirements and the program details… and see you in Spain!

Tasks of the Auxiliares de
Conversación
Language Assistants are considered pillars of public
schools since this role is crucial in the foreign language
classroom. You will have a very active role in supporting
the main teacher and helping students improve their
conversation skills. You will teach English to students who
are in Preschool, Primary School, Middle School, or High
School. However, you will not be responsible for grading
or disciplining them. The specific activities and tasks will
depend 100% on the school but, in general terms, you will be
expected to:

1. show initiative, autonomy, and professional behavior,

2. deliver English lessons to students,
3. help in different subjects such as Math, Physical Education,
Technology, Biology, or Social Science if needed (you do
not need to be an expert in those subjects, as it will still be
focused on English conversation).
4. collaborate with other teachers in lesson planning and
integrate into the school dynamic,
5. encourage oral practice in English (Spanish will not be
allowed in class),
6. motivate students through engaging materials,
7. give short presentations, prepare games and activities, and
8. share the culture of your own country.

If you already have teaching experience, this program will be a great chance to share your
knowledge with the school community and learn from a different education system. And if you
do not have previous teaching experience, you want to gain more confidence in the classroom,
or you want to complement your teaching practice at the school with a certification, you
might consider enrolling in the TEFL course we offer as well. More info on page 11.
At the end of the program, you will also receive a Certificate of Completion issued by the school,
which can boost your resume.

6
school placement
Specific Location and Age Range of Students
Public schools are located all over the regions of Madrid, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha and
Castilla y León. Regardless of your school location, the experience will be very enriching both at
a personal and professional level. If you receive a placement in a city, you will be able to enjoy the
perks of an urban lifestyle and the leisure possibilities it offers, but accommodation and other
expenses will be higher. If you get a school on the outskirts of the city, you will find the comfort
of the city without the frenzy. The outskirts have all types of amenities within easy reach and
housing is reasonably priced. If you are assigned to a school in a town or small area (pueblo), the
cost of living will be cheaper and you will experience the most authentic and charming Spanish
way of life, immersing yourself in a friendly culture. Opportunities to be in touch with nature are
among the highlights of these areas.
At ConversaSpain, we can place you in the region of your choice, but the Education Authority
of that region will be the one assigning the specific school. They will consider your age range
group and location preferences whenever possible, but we cannot guarantee your specific
placement preferences will be met, as at ConversaSpain we are not in charge of the placements.
Therefore, you need to be flexible and open-minded in terms of the school’s location and the
age range of the students to have a positive experience in the program.

monthly stipend & cost of living

The Regional Education Authority will compensate you for your collaboration at the school with
a tax-free monthly stipend of €1,000 (in the Community of Madrid), €850 (in the Region of
Murcia), or €800 (in Castilla-La Mancha and in Castilla y León).
This stipend will be sent into a Spanish bank account, which means that all participants have to
open a Spanish bank account as soon as they arrive in Spain to be paid on time.
The first stipend will be processed after your first month at school, so if you start in October, you
may receive the stipend anytime during the month of November, etc. Thus, we advise that you
bring enough savings to get you through the first two months of the program.
