Connecting devices

Objectives
1. To become familiar with Hub ,repeater , bridge & switch
2. Why we use connecting device.
3. How to create a cluster.
Procedure
 Hub

 Operate at the physical layer

 Just a connector
 Open cisco packet tracer
 Select hub , see fig(1)

Fig (1)

 Double click on the hub , see fig(2)

 From physical we can see only (6) ports and this mean that we
must add new ports if we need to connect more than (6).
 To add or delete ports , switch off hub and then drag & drop the
port that you want to change it
 The maximum number of ports is (10)ports
Fig (2)

 From config , change the name of hub myhub, see fig (3)

Fig (3)
 Repeater
 Operate at physical layer
 Used to regenerate signal
 Connect two segments of network
 The length of cable is limited to (500 m)
 Select repeater , see fig (4)

Fig (4)

 Double click on the repeater , see fig (5)

 From physical we can see the repeater has only two ports
and when you want to change the port you must switch
off the repeater and then drag and drop

Fig (5)
 From config change the name of repeater to
"myrepeater , see fig(6)

Fig (6)

 Bridge
 Operate at data link layer
 Regenerate and check the message
 Select bridge from switches , see fig (7)

Fig (7)

 Double click on the bridge , see fig(8)

Fig (8)

 From physical , we can change the ports by drag &

drop
 From config , select setting and change the name to
"mybridge" , see fig (9)

Fig (9)

 Switches
 Two layer connecting device
 Check the message
 Select switch , see fig (10)
Fig (10)

 Double click on the switch , see fig (11)

Fig (11)

 From physical , we can change the physical ports

 Select config , we will see a message about booting
the device , see fig (12)
Fig (11)
 Change the name & host name to "myswitch"
 In config we can see NVRAM (Non-volatile random-
access memory (NVRAM)) and has two option
 Erase
 Save
 In config , we can see start up and has two option
 Load : load the configuration from other file
 Export : to export the configuration to file and
save it to used it in future and when we select
this option the configuration will saved in folder
of packet tracer , see fig (12)

Fig (12)
 In config , we can see running config and has two
options
 Merge
 Export
 Select algorithm setting and when uncheck the
global setting we will get three options , see fig(13)
 Maximum number of sessions
 Maximum number of connection
 Storm control multiplier

Fig (13)

 Select CLI to copy or past the command line

interface , see fig (14)

Fig (14)
 How to create cluster

 Load the simple network project , see fig (15)

Fig (15)

 Select the two computers and hub

 Select new cluster , see fig (16)

Fig(16)
Discussion
1. Sometimes need to load configuration in switches, why?
2. Give advantages of merge option in switch
3. Define cluster and why use it
4. Create two clusters and connect them by using switch if you know
 First cluster has 10 computer connected by using hub
 Second cluster has 8 computers , ever four computer
connected by hub

Please after you create your network send a message from any
computer in the first cluster to the second cluster and discuss the
results.

5. Change the hubs in the network above by using switches and send
a message from second cluster to the first cluster and discuss the
result
6. Change the switch that used to connect the two cluster in the
network above by using bridge , discuss the results if you send a
message from second cluster to the first
7. Write the ARP table of the third computer in the first cluster
8. Apply the tracert in the network above at the first computer in the
first cluster to the end computer in the cluster two and write the
result
