1. You are provided with:
Solution A- sulphuric (VI) acid containing 4.9g of the acid in 1 liter of
solution.
Solution B – sodium hydroxide solution.
Solid Y – 1.0 g of ammonium salt, NH4X.
You are required to:
Standardize the sodium hydroxide, solution B.
Determine the relative formula mass of the ammonium salt.
Procedure 1.
(i) Fill the burette with solution A.
(ii) Using a pipette and a pipette filler, transfer 25cm3 of solution B into a
250 volumetric flask. Add distilled water up to the mark and label it
solution C.
(iii) Using a pipette and a pipette filler, transfer 25cm3 of solution C into a
conical flask. Add 3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate against
solution A from the burette.
(iv) Repeat the titration two more times and record your results in the table 1
below.
Table 1
Experiment I II III
Final burette reading (cm3)
Initial burette reading (cm3)
Volume of solution A(cm3)
(4 marks)
(a) Calculate the average volume of solution A used. (1 mark)
(b) Calculate the number of moles of solution A used. (1 mark)
(c) Calculate the number of moles of solution C used. (1 mark)
(d) Calculate the concentration of solution C, in mole dm-3. (1 mark)
2
(e) calculate the concentration of solution B, in mole dm-3. (1 mark)
Procedure 2.
(i) Place all the 1.0 g of the ammonium salt, solid Y into a 250 ml conical flask.
(ii) Using a pipette and a pipette filler, transfer 25 cm3 of solution B into the conical
flask containing solid Y and shake well until all the solid dissolves.
(iii) Heat the mixture until it boils for about one minute. Allow the mixture to cool.
(iv) Using a measuring cylinder, add 50 cm3 of distilled water to the boiled mixture
and shake well.
(v) Transfer the solution in the conical flask into a 100 ml volumetric flask and the add
distilled water up to the mark. Label it as solution D.
(vi) Pipette 25 cm3 of solution D into a 250 ml conical flask, add 3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with solution A from the burette.
(vii) Repeat the titration two more times and record your observations in table 2
below.
