Introduction

B
y the grace of God I have run effectively in
ministry and have seen the hand of God touch
and change the lives of those around me. The
prophetic ministry has given me the upper hand in
functioning as a child of God.

I have first-hand experience with the spiritual world, from

praying in other tongues, seeing and identifying angels, and
having visions. The revelations may seem as if they are
ordinary but they carry power of transformation in ministry.

Get ready to fly in ministry and see changes in your spiritual

walk. There is so much you and I can do for the Kingdom of
God if we hearken to the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Study
this handbook diligently and look out for things you can take
advantage of to become an effective minister of the gospel –
you may be an Evangelist, a Pastor, Prophet, Teacher and
music minister – this course will refresh you with a fresh
prophetic anointing for growth. There is so much you can

6
accomplish if you give yourself wholeheartedly to these
teachings because they are aren’t ordinary but Holy Ghost
breathed to effect change in the extraordinary manner.

WHAT IS FATHERHOOD

9
WHAT IS FATHERHOOD

The phrase spiritual father is not found in the Bible. There

are passages that do imply a form of spiritual fatherhood
between individuals and over churches. Peter called Mark
“my son” (1 Peter 5:13). Paul refers to Timothy as “my true
son in the faith,” thus indicating his close relationship to
Timothy (1 Timothy 1:2). Elsewhere in Paul’s letters, he also
refers to Onesimus as his son, indicating that he was a
spiritual father to the former slave (Philemon 1:10).

The apostles also imply that they are “spiritual fathers” in

relationship to various congregations. The apostle John
referred to members of a church he was overseeing as his
children (1 John 2:1, 12–13). Paul’s relationship with the
Corinthian church is likened to that of a father to his children
(2 Corinthians 12:14–15). Elsewhere, Paul writes, “I am
writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear
children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ,
you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became
your father through the gospel” (1 Corinthians 4:14–15). In
each case, it could be that these apostles had led their
“spiritual children” to faith in Christ; even if they did not,
the apostles loved, protected, and led those under their

10
spiritual care as a father would his own children. We note
that, although Paul calls Timothy his “son in the faith,”
nowhere are any of the apostles addressed as “father” by
other believers.

Father is a title used by Catholics to designate priests and

even the Pope, whose title means “father.” Just as a father
works at raising his children to maturity, so Catholic priests
claim that their job as spiritual fathers is to raise their
congregations to spiritual maturity. They liken their job as
spiritual fathers to that of physical fathers, claiming they
wash the children at birth with infant baptism, feed them
with the Eucharist, and guide them by interpreting the Bible.
Roman Catholics use verses such as:

1 Corinthians 4:14 I write not these things to shame

you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.

1 Corinthians 4:15 For though ye have ten thousand

instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers:
for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the
gospel.

And,

11
2 Corinthians 12:14 Behold, the third time I am ready
to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you:
for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought
not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the
children.

2 Corinthians 12:15 And I will very gladly spend

and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I
love you, the less I be loved.

As support for their priests being called “fathers,” but

nowhere in Scripture are overseers or pastors called spiritual
fathers. Rather, they are called shepherds.

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to

Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me
more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou
knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my
lambs.

John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time,

Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto
him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He
saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon,

son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved
12
because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou
me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all
things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto
him, Feed my sheep.

1 Peter 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort,

who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings
of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall
be revealed:

1 Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you,

taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but
willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

1 Peter 5:3 Neither as being lords over God's

heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

Just as Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), so are pastors

to be shepherds of the flock of believers that Christ entrusts
to them (1 Peter 5:2).

The idea of a spiritual father is often used more generically

of any Christian man who is discipling or mentoring a
younger Christian in the faith. Jesus has commanded His
followers to “make disciples,” which involves creating
13
spiritual relationships that in some ways resemble
father/son and mother/daughter relationships (Matthew
28:19). In Paul’s letter to Titus, he discusses how older
women should teach younger Christian women in the faith
(Titus 2:4).

As Timothy’s spiritual father, Paul taught doctrine and

modeled Christian living to his young friend by taking him
along on mission trips;

2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words,

which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which
is in Christ Jesus.

Acts 16:1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and,

behold, a certain disciple was there, named
Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a
Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

Act 16:2 Which was well reported of by the brethren

that were at Lystra and Iconium.

Act 16:3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him;

and took and circumcised him because of the Jews

14
which were in those quarters: for they knew all that
his father was a Greek.

Act 16:4 And as they went through the cities, they

delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were
ordained of the apostles and elders which were at
Jerusalem.

Act 16:5 And so were the churches established in the

faith, and increased in number daily.

2 Corinthians 1:19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ,

who was preached among you by us, even by me and
Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but
in him was yea.

After a while, Timothy took on a leadership role of his own,

and he in turn discipled other believers in a “spiritual
father”-type of relationship.

1 Thessalonians 3:1 Wherefore when we could no

longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens
alone;

15
1 Thessalonians 3:2 And sent Timotheus, our
brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer
in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to
comfort you concerning your faith:

1 Thessalonians 3:3 That no man should be moved

by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are
appointed thereunto.

1 Timothy 4:11 These things command and teach.

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but

be thou an example of the believers, in word, in
conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

1 Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to

reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee,

which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying
on of the hands of the presbytery.

1 Timothy 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give

thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear
to all.

1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the

doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou
shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

GET A FATHER

17
GET A FATHER

A
father raises children for an inheritance. It is
important to be identified by who your father
is. You cannot inherit outside teaching and the
one who teaches you determines your level of inheritance.
That is the nature of growth in ministry. When you follow a
teacher you only learn of the things he or she has taught. This
means the student knows of nothing but the things taught to
him. The greatest example in the Bible is of Elisha and Elijah;

2 Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were

gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I
shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee.
And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of
thy spirit be upon me.

2 Kings 2:10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard

thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken
from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall
not be so.
18
2 Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went
on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot
of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both
asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into
heaven.

2 Kings 2:12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My

father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the
horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he
took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two
pieces.

A father should be someone you have access to. There is no

father that you have no access to that can help you put your
life in order. A father should be someone who gives you time
and cares for your growth in life. You learn to discover
yourself through the presence of a father. Whenever you get
the opportunity to be with your father you need to ask many
questions. One person I know who asked so many questions
was Peter.

Luke 12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and your

lights burning;

Luke 12: 36 And ye yourselves like unto men that

wait for their lord, when he will return from the

19
wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they
may open unto him immediately.

Luke 12:37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord

when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto
you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit
down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

Luke 12:38 And if he shall come in the second watch,

or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed
are those servants.

Luke 12:39 And this know, that if the goodman of

the house had known what hour the thief would come,
he would have watched, and not have suffered his
house to be broken through.

Luke 12:40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of

man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Luke 12:41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest

thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

As you can see the Lord Jesus spoke and they didn’t
understand and Peter asked. He always asked the Master
questions. He never let the Lord loose because that was the
only opportunity, he had to understand the teachings of
Christ.

20
Mark 14:32 And they came to a place which was
named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit
ye here, while I shall pray.

Mark 14:33 And he taketh with him Peter and James

and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very
heavy;

Mark 14:34 And saith unto them, My soul is

exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and
watch.

Mark 14:35 And he went forward a little, and fell on

the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the
hour might pass from him.

Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are

possible unto thee; take away this cup from me:
nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Mark 14:37 And he cometh, and findeth them

sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou?
couldest not thou watch one hour?

Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into

temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is
weak.

Mark 14:39 And again he went away, and prayed,

and spake the same words.

21
Mark 14:40 And when he returned, he found them
asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist
they what to answer him.

Mark 14:41 And he cometh the third time, and saith

unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is
enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is
betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mark 14:42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth

me is at hand.

Because Peter always asked questions it proved his interest

in the things of the spirit. When you ask you show concern
and interest in the things you are asking about. Therefore,
the Lord took him everywhere and wanted to teach him a lot
about the Kingdom.

When you ask you also have to be a good and great listener.
Listen to the father because he mentors you as a son in
ministry. Every son is an heir and the inheritance of every
heir can be destroyed if there's no father figure to protect
guide and lead that son. Father imparts our mentality with
knowledge to influence and choose our destiny with
wisdom.

22
Your story can't be told without your foundation and your
foundation is your father. There is no room for growth
without a foundation. When you are connected to a father
you will have an advantage over other things in ministry. I
am always inspired by David’s mighty men. They listened
and gave themselves to the leading of David. When you find
a father in the Lord learn to listen and be loyal.

There are people who have gone before you and have full
knowledge of things that you might want to do. A mentor
will assist you to become the best you can ever be. Align
yourself to a spiritual ministry and be thus guided to be a
better person and achieve more than you have ever achieved.

23
III
SUBMIT

24
SUBMIT

I
t is self-determination, not submission to the will
of another. Anything that enhances my individual
liberty to do as I please is good, and anything that
encumbers me and limits my ability to do as I please is bad.
That is the spirit breathed. And that makes this text
culturally outrageous: “Obey your leaders and submit to
them.”

And we know from the side of leaders that power corrupts.

So, for leadership, the emphasis must always fall on
servanthood, not lording it over others. Paul said,

“Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you
for your joy” (2 Corinthians 1:24).

That is the kind of leaders we are supposed to submit to.

They come alongside, and they work for our joy. And the
25
New Testament itself says leaders can go wrong. They can
go bad and disqualify themselves from being obeyed or
submitted to. In Acts 20:30, Paul is speaking to the elders,
and he says, “From among your own selves will rise men
speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after
them.” So there you have people submitting to elders who
are taking them to destruction. And Paul wants to warn the
church: Don’t let that happen.

It’s the same thing in;

1 Timothy 5:19 Against an elder receive not an

accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

1 Timothy 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that

others also may fear.

Paul instructs what to do if an elder is found to be in sin. He

should be disciplined and publicly removed from office, if
necessary, so that the people will not be hurt by that. Same
thing in 1 Peter 5:2 — Paul tells the elders, “Shepherd the
flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight not for
shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in
26
your charge.” So the New Testament is not naïve about the
abuses of leadership. And, nevertheless, here we have
Hebrews 13:17: “Obey them, submit to them.”

27
Trusting and Yielding

Now what would that mean? Here is my best shot at how it

would look. There is a certain spirit and a certain limit and a
certain shape that leadership has and that the people have in
response to this verse. The word obey is a very broad word
that means be persuaded by, trust, rely on. It comes to mean
obey because that is what you do when you trust somebody.
So you might say it is a soft word for obey. It encourages a
good relationship of trust, but still calls for the people to be
swayed by leaders. So be a swayable person. Be a person
ready to learn, ready to be taught, ready to be led, not eager
to kick and rebel against anybody that calls you to do
something at church.

And the other word, submit, occurs only here in the New
Testament — this particular form of submit: upeiko. It is
narrower than the other one and means make room for by
retiring from a seat or yield to or submit to.

So, with all that, I would try to distill the meaning of

Hebrews 13:17 something like this: I should have a bent
toward trusting its leaders. Be bent that way. Don’t be a
distrustful people. Second, I should have a disposition to be
supportive in my attitudes and actions toward the goals and
the direction of the leaders. If they craft a vision and they set

28
some goals, be supportive. Go with them. I think it means we
should want to imitate their faith, and I think it means we
should have a happy inclination to comply with their
instructions.

29
Inclined to Follow

And if you listen carefully to those several paraphrases of

what I think this means, I have used phrases like a bent
toward trusting and disposition toward support and
wanting to imitate and inclination to comply. But the reason
for that kind of phraseology is to capture both sides of the
biblical truth — namely, elders are fallible and should not
lord it over the flock and are not absolute. God is absolute.
Yet, the flock should follow good leadership. Our hearts
should be bent, and our disposition should be that way, and
our wants should be that way, and our inclination should be
that way. And where those two truths are working, it is a
beautiful thing in a church.

The Greek words for “obey” and “submit” mean to obey and
submit! The difference, if any, between the two words is that
obedience implies going along with direction or commands,
whereas submission involves an attitude. You can obey
outwardly while seething with anger on the inside, but you
aren’t submitting. Submission implies a sweet spirit of
cooperation that stems from trust. You trust that the leaders
have your best interests at heart, and so you go along with
them. The author gives two reasons why you should obey
and submit to godly church leaders:

30
You should obey godly leaders because they keep watch
over your souls as those who are accountable to God.

God has constituted various levels of authority under His

ultimate authority. The purpose for all authority is to protect
and bless those under authority. God establishes the
authority of civil governments to protect and bless law-
abiding citizens from those that would harm or take
advantage of them. When the government does its job,
criminals are punished, foreign invaders are kept at bay, and
the people can dwell in peace. To the extent that government
leaders are corrupt or negligent, the citizens suffer.

In the family, God appoints husbands to have authority

under Christ in order to protect and bless their wives and
children. The husband is to provide for his family (1 Tim.
5:8), to protect his family from physical and spiritual danger,
and to bless his family by leading them in the ways of God.
An ungodly husband who uses authority for his own selfish
ends is abusing the authority that God has entrusted to him,
and will answer to God for his sins.

31
In the church, God has appointed elders or pastors
(shepherds) to oversee the flock (Acts 20:28; 1 Pet. 5:1-4).
They are not to lord it over the church, but rather to be
examples to the flock (1 Pet. 5:3; 2 Cor. 1:24). On every level,
those in authority are never in absolute authority. Every
leader will give an account to God!

In our text, leaders is plural. The New Testament is clear that

there is to be a plurality of elders over the local church (Acts
14:23; 20:17; Titus 1:5). Plural leadership is a safeguard
against the abuse of authority. When all of the elders in a
local church have wrestled through an issue biblically and in
prayer, and they all agree, they are not infallible, but there is
a fair chance that they are right. There should always be
room for biblically-based discussion of issues (Acts 15), but
when the elders come to a consensus, the church should
follow their leadership, unless it is clearly against Scripture
on a major point of doctrine.

The text is clear that the church should submit to godly

church leaders. Abusive leaders should be confronted and
removed from office, “the Apostle speaks only of those who
faithfully performed their office; for they who have nothing
but the title, nay, who use the title of pastors for the purpose
of destroying the Church, deserve but little reverence and
still less confidence.”
32
Before we leave the subject of obedience and submission to
leaders, let me be more specific on what it does not mean and
what it means. First, it does not mean blindly following
leaders without question. I doubt if this is a problem for most
people, but the Jim Jones mass suicide incident of the 1970’s
shows that it can be a problem when an evil leader deceives
people. Even in a church that is seeking to follow the Bible,
it is not wrong and is right to examine the Scriptures to see if
the teaching is sound (as the Bereans did with Paul’s
teaching, Acts 17:11). I welcome interacting with anyone
about my sermons, as long as you are seeking to be faithful
and submissive to what the Bible teaches. I am not infallible!

When is the church responsible to obey and submit?

Obviously, when the leaders teach God’s truth, especially on
the essential doctrines and commands of the faith, we all
must submit. It is not the elders’ authority, but God’s, that
we must submit to. If it is an area where godly Christians
may differ, we must give grace to one another to disagree.
But submission to godly leadership would require that if you
disagree with me on a secondary matter, you would be
disobeying God to lead a faction against me. There needs to
be a respect shown toward the office of those who teach
God’s Word. Paul wrote to Titus (2:15), “These things speak
and exhort and reprove with all authority [lit.,
commandment]. Let no one disregard you.” To disregard
33
Titus would have been to disregard God, whose word Titus
preached.

I have seen two specific situations where church members

should submit, even though it may be difficult. In one
instance in my ministry in California, a very popular author
was coming to our small town to speak. The problem was,
this man had left his wife for another woman. The church he
attended had disciplined him, but he told them that they
couldn’t do that, and he kept on with his popular ministry.
We told our people that as elders, we did not want them to
attend his talk, because to attend it was to give endorsement
of his sin. Later I was grieved to hear that several of our
members went anyway. I think that they disobeyed Hebrews
13:17.

Another situation involved disciplining a widow in the

church who married an unbeliever. She knew that this was
sin, and since she had been the leader of our prayer ministry,
her sin wrongly could have tempted other single women to
follow her example. But when the elders put her out of the
fellowship, some of the women in the church continued to
fellowship with her, in disobedience to 1 Corinthians 5, and
in disobedience to the elders.

34
Church discipline is a difficult matter, because there are
always those in the church who have emotional ties to the
one being disciplined. Some always feel sorry for the person
and urge others in the church to show grace and mercy, not
judgment. But to be effective, discipline has to be uniformly
enforced. If some members continue to fellowship with the
person under discipline, then the penalty of being put out of
the fellowship is undermined. It’s the same thing as when
parents do not stand together in disciplining their children.
The children quickly recognize that they can do as they
please, without any penalty, because dad and mom don’t
agree. So obedience to church leadership is especially
important if the church has to discipline a sinning member
