PROJECT : PROPOSED SKY SHED & HARD STAND FOR DRDO VEHICLES AT BHARAT

ELECTRONICS LIMITED, BENGALURU.

CLIENT : BHARAT ELECTRONICS LIMITED DATE : 04-12-2019

REV : R0
DESIGN OF GRIT & SAG RODS ( SPAN = 9.25 m )
DESIGN DATA :

Grit Span, l = 9.25 m

Grit Spacing = 1.20 m
2
Yield strength of steel = 250 N/mm
Dead Load on Girt, Wd = 0.15 kN/m2
Max. Wind Load co-efficient on Wall = 1.10
Wind Pressure on Wall, WWL = 0.392 kN/m2 (max)

LOAD CALCULATIONS ON GRIT MEMBER :

Dead Load on Girt, Wd = 1.2 m × 0.15 kN.sqm = 0.18 kN/m

Wind Load on Girt, WL = 1.2 m × 1.1 × 0.392 kN.sqm = 0.517 kN/m

Wd

WL

DESIGN LOAD CALCULATIONS :

Major Axis Moment, due to Wind load on the member, M u -u = ( WL × l2 ) / 10

= 0.517 × 9.25 × 9.25
10
= 4.43 kN-m

Minor Axis Moment, due to Dead load on the member, M v -v = ( Wd × l2 ) / 10

= 0.18 × 9.25 × 9.25
10
= 1.54 kN-m

Required Sectional Modulus of Member,

Z u -u = M u -u 1 + M v -v Z u -u
×
σ bc M u -u Z v -v

Considering the ( Z u -u ) / ( Z v -v ) = 7.00

Increasing the σ bc by 33.50 % to account the wind effect,
σ bc = 1.335 × 0.66 × fy = 220.28 N/mm2

Z u -u = 4.43 × 1000000 1+ 1.54 7.00

×
1.335 × 0.66 × 250 4.43

Z u -u = 69042 mm3
Considering the Channel Section, ISMC 225 @ 25.90 kg/m

Self Weight of Member, SW = 0.2541 kN/m

Moment of Inertia :
I x -x = 26946000 mm4
4
I z -z = 1872000 mm
Sectional Modulus :
3
Z x -x = 239500 mm
3
Z z -z = 32800 mm

Permissible Bending compression stress of member,

σ bc provided = 4.43 × 1000000 1+ 1.54 7.30
×
239500 4.43

σ bc provided = 65.44 N/mm2

2
σ bc allowable = 1.335 × 0.66 × fy = 220 N/mm
Permissible Bending compression stress of member is lesser than allowable stress, Hence OK.

CHECK FOR DEFLECTION

Deflection due to Wind load, WL = 0.517 kN/m

ᵟmax WL = 5 × W × l4
384 × E × I x-x
= 5 × 0.517 × 9250 ^ 4
384 × 2.05 × E5 × 26946000
ᵟmax WL = 8.93 mm

ᵟ allowable = Span / 180 = 9250 = 51.39 mm

180
Deflection of member is within the limits, Hence OK.

Deflection due to Dead load, Wd = 0.434 kN/m

( Dead load + Self weight of Member )

ᵟmax DL = 5 × W × l4
384 × E × I z-z
= 5 × 0.434 × 9250 ^ 4
384 × 2.05 × E5 × 1872000
ᵟmax DL = 107.83 mm

Deflection exceeds the allowable limit, hence revise section property or introduce sag rods.

Introducing 1 No. of Sag rods between the Grit members to break the effective length of member
along the minor axis of the member.

L z -z = 9250 = 4625.00 mm
2
4
ᵟmax DL = 5 × W × l z-z
384 × E × I z-z
= 5 × 0.434 × 4625 ^ 4
384 × 2.05 × E5 × 1872000
ᵟmax DL = 6.74 mm

Deflection of member is within the limits, Hence OK.

DESIGN OF SAG RODS

The sag rod should be designed for the 2.5% of the axial capacity of the Purlin member or
bending compressive force of Purlin.

F = 2.5 % × W × l z-z
= 2.5 % × 0.4341 × 4.625
F = 5.02 kN

Area of the Sag rod required,

A req = F / ( 0.6 × f y )
= (3.35 × 1000 ) / ( 0.60 × 250 )
A req = 33.46 mm2

Hence provide 1 No. of 12 φ sag rod.
