THE BLUE BEAD
1.Describe the appearance of the crocodile what made him move?
The crocodile was twice the length of a full grown man .Inside its stomach ,apart from rocks
which he had swallowed to digest food, there was also a silver bracelet .As it rested in the
shallow waters only its nose and eyes were above the water level .It had blackish brown skin on
top and yellowish white skin underneath. Its tail was huge and strong. Its mouth stretched along
the whole head and its teeth were aligned looking like a bony smile adorning is its face .Its skin
was inch thick armour which shielded its body from the fiercest attacks, with only the eyes and
soft underarms that remained vulnerable.
2. How can you conclude that the crocodile was a strong and dangerous animal?
The crocodile had grown to huge size and strength over the years feeding on putrid fish and
carcasses. Its skin nearly an inch thick made it invincible to attacks by birds of prey and
carnivorous fishes. It's long tail could easily rip apart attackers and thus offer it further
protection.
3. What was the blue gem?
The blue gem was probably the broken neck of a blue bottle as it was perforated right through
due to rolling in water for long it had been worn out buy sand grains and assumed a glistening
shape like a blue bead.
4. What had Sibiya seen and heard while passing through the bazaar?
Not only humans but the other attendees at the bazaar included stray dogs monkeys full of fleas
and even cattle .The people either gossiped or bargained for various products and spat here and
there while chatting .The mingling scent of sweat ,open drains and the cigarettes did not bother
Sibiya as she was engrossed in absorbing the sights and smells to keep with her as long as she
could not get the chance to be in the market very often .The cloth stall with crisp cotton cloth
rolls also attracted her one of the major attractions was the Kashmiri travelling merchant who
rolled out dawn coloured silk cloth for everyone to see . Sibiya was tempted at the site of
various sweets on display at the sweetmeat shop .They were not only coated with honey but
dust and flies as well. but to Sibiya they were the epitome of taste and delicacy .They were
coloured green and magenta and gave out a delicious aroma.
5.What type of necklace did Sibia wish to wear? What was the difficulty in getting such a
necklace?
Sibia wished to wear ornaments which would make rattling swish round her neck, as she
froushed along with lots of necklace. The beads of the necklace were found everywhere in the
jungle and Sibia were collecting them too but the beads were hard and had to be pierced with a
hot iron needle but her family needle was damaged and due to abject poverty they could not
afford to get a new one. Thus, she had to wait until her family got a new one which be after a
long time.
6.At the end of the day, how did Sibia feel? What does it reveal about her character?
At the end of the day feels very lucky to find the blue bead . She expresses no happiness for
killing the crocodile and saving the women from the crocodile but only feels happy for finding
the blue bead in the river. It reveals that's bears character was really heroine as she did all these
things every day and experience them on a regular basis therefore it was nothing new for her
but to find Blue bead was specially more important to her. It also reveals about her poverty.
7.Why is Sibiya called a child woman ?
Sibiya the main character or the protagonist of the story the blue bead it's called happy
immature child woman at the age of 12 years because of her appearance and the burden which
she bore to help in household chores.
