Personal statement by Sumaya Mohamed.

Chemistry. Everything around us is chemistry. The day I learnt

chemistry plays a role in every aspect of living, I was immediately
fascinated. My mind made up. From the air we breathe, to the
energy problem our society faces. Chemistry is the future, and being
granted the chance to study this, to possibly make a difference in the
world, to being able to make my own discovery, is all I aspire to
achieve.

At college, I particularly enjoy playing an active role in school affairs. I

achieve this by being a member of student council, by representing
my classmates at meetings when discussing what is best for the
future of the college and its students. This has taught me the
importance of being open-minded and accepting the view of others.
This is a skill I intend to carry with me at university, as I will be
surrounded by fresh faces from all around the UK, or the world.

One of my main hobbies in particular is reading. Reading for many

years from such a young age built up my English language to a
standard that I can be proud of today. Recently, I read What is
Chemistry? by Peter Atkins. This was an extremely great read, and
explains how chemistry has made a difference to our society,
through the eyes of a chemist. He applies chemistry to the real
world. In chapter 2, Atkins discusses the periodic table, and explains
how atoms are structured. A quote which speaks out to me is “ The
Periodic Table portrays an extraordinary feature of matter: that the
elements are related to one another. We are now so familiar with
the table that feature is easily forgotten. For example, it was not
thought that there was a relationship between sulphur and oxygen.
However, we now know that the two elements do indeed react and
form sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide. These two compounds
play a massive role in the manufacturing of sulphuric acid. Atkins
connects many aspects of chemistry together, even ones that are not
taught in my syllabus, for example, quantum mechanics. This extra
reading provides me with background information and allow me to
be better prepared at the beginning of Year 1.

Thanks to my college and its amazing chemistry department, they

have further fuelled my aspirations to study Chemistry at university.
One way in which they have done this is by providing me with
opportunities to go on trips. I visited CPL Aromas fragrance factory in
February 2018. This allowed me to see the chemistry industry at
work, and understand how chemistry is applied outside of the
classroom as well. During this trip, I learnt and understood many
aspects of chemistry. At the factory, I learnt what a fragrance was
and the factors that have to be considered when making a fragrance.
A discussion was had about the advantages and disadvantages of
naturals and synthetics. A main cause of concern in synthetic
perfumes is potentially dangerous chemical ingredients, which could
have an adverse effect on one’s skin. However, with natural
perfumes, which mainly come from essential oils, the risk is minimal.
Speaking to the owner, the R&D personnel, analysts too, made me
realise just how much thought and hard work goes into
manufacturing perfume. Being able to see the chemical industry at
work, and the actual manufacturing of perfume is something I will
likely never forget.

Over the past year, I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Mathematics

and look forward to continue studying this year. I find Mathematics
to be very useful, as maths plays a key role in A Level Chemistry.
With the maths knowledge I have acquired, I have been able to do
calculations I never thought possible. The Arrhenius Equation, for
example. When I first began this topic, I felt advantaged as I had
already dealt with natural logs in Mathematics. This made the topic
less difficult to approach, and thanks to previous lessons, I was able
to rearrange the equation with ease.
Over the summer of 2017, I took part in NCS. Safe to say, it was a life
changing experience. This is where I learnt to be confident, assertive
and build my personality in a way suitable for this course. I
understood the importance of listening, and also the importance of
taking charge when needed. Being around many different people
from different places with different stories allowed me to see a
perspective of the world I had not yet seen. This, I believe this will
prepare me for the diversity I can expect to see at university, as well
as the importance of integration. One activity I did while completing
The Challenge was a hike. Hiking was an experience for the both the
mind and the body, which teaches one the importance of
perseverance and patience. This means no matter how difficult my
course gets, I will be persevering and aiming to work as hard as
possible to achieve the best results.
