to get everything just right, but
with practice, it gets easier!”

Ways to come up with Cartoon

1. Pick a Style - Start with a basic style. “Think about
how you want your character to look— funny, cute, or
even a little wacky! You might choose a style based on
other cartoons you like, or create something unique.”

2. Create a Story Line - Create a character of your

choice “Imagine who your character is. Is it a superhero?
A funny animal? Think about your character’s personality,
what they like, and what kind of adventure they might go
on. This helps make your character come alive!”

3. Create a Morph Grid - Make a morph grid to

practice your drawing skills. “This is a practice tool
where you draw your character in different poses and with
different expressions. It helps you get to know your
character better and build your drawing skills.”

4. Insert a Character into an Established Story -

Take a storyline you already know and love, and
think about how a new character would interact
with them. “Think about a story you already know, like a
favorite movie or book. Then imagine how your new
character would fit into that world. How would they act,
and what would they do? This helps you understand their
personality even more.”

5. Draw Your Daydreams - If you've ever dreamed

up about a scenario where you were the hero, then
consider this making this your character. “Think of a
daydream or a time you imagined yourself as a hero or in
a cool situation. You could turn this version of yourself into
a character for your cartoon!”

6. Associated brainstorming - Start with a word that

describes what it is you want to draw, like "cute" or
"hero". Then see where your mind goes when you
think that word. “Pick a word that describes what you
want to draw, like “brave” or “silly.” Then, let your mind
explore ideas related to that word. This can help you come
up with more creative character ideas.”
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

7. Look at Pictures - If you are having trouble

drawing realistic details, take a look at pictures.
“If you’re having trouble with realistic details, look at some
photos. Observing real life can help you draw better,
especially if you want your character to look a bit more
lifelike.”

often enough, you create a face you want to see

“This is a fun exercise that many cartoonists use. Draw three
random lines on a piece of paper, and then see if you can
turn those lines into a face. This can help you discover new
character ideas you may not have thought of.”

9. Keep Drawing - Practice helps your skills sharp.

“The best way to get better at drawing is to practice. Every
time you draw, you’re making your skills sharper. Keep
going, even if it doesn’t look perfect at first!”

C. LESSON PROPER
Introduction to Key Composers and Their Works
The development of Philippine music in the 20th century reflects
the country's rich history, shaped by both local traditions and
Western influences. Following centuries of colonization by Spain
and the United States, Filipino composers began to integrate
Western compositional techniques with indigenous elements,
creating a unique and evolving musical identity. These
composers played a significant role in the establishment of
modern Philippine music, each contributing in distinct ways.

1. Francisco Santiago
Known as the "Father of Kundiman," Francisco Santiago was a
pioneer in elevating the traditional Filipino song genre, the
Kundiman, to a level comparable to Western art songs. His
deep connection with Filipino culture and his education at the
American Conservatory of Music in Chicago helped him blend
Western classical techniques with Filipino themes. Santiago's
work remains central to the Philippine music canon, with his
compositions such as Pakiusap, Madaling Araw, and Kundiman
(Anak Dalita) resonating deeply with Filipino identity.

2. Nicanor Abelardo
A graduate of the Chicago Music College, Nicanor Abelardo is one of
the key figures in transforming the Kundiman into an art song,
elevating it to the same level as the German Lied and French
Chanson. Abelardo’s music was influenced by the European
Romantic and Serialist schools, blending these with Filipino
cultural elements. His most well-known compositions, including
Mutya ng Pasig and Nasaan Ka Irog, showcase his ability to
fuse local Filipino music with Western styles, creating timeless
pieces that express the Filipino spirit.
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

3. Antonio Molina
A highly respected composer and the first National
Artist for Music, Antonio Molina is known for his
innovative use of both Romantic and
Impressionist styles. His fascination with Western
classical traditions, particularly the works of
Debussy, influenced his compositions, yet he never
strayed far from his Filipino roots. Molina’s works like
Malikmata (Transfiguration) and Hatinggabi
exemplify his ability to weave together the exotic
harmonies of Impressionism with the emotional
depth of Filipino music, cementing his place as a key
figure in the evolution of Philippine classical music.

4. Lucio San Pedro

Lucio San Pedro, often regarded as a "romantic
nationalist," is renowned for incorporating
Philippine folk elements into his compositions,
blending them with Western musical forms. His
most famous work, the lullaby Sa Ugoy ng Duyan,
exemplifies his ability to evoke deep emotion
through simple yet poignant melodies. A professor
and mentor at the University of the Philippines, San
Pedro’s music continues to influence generations of
Filipino composers, with his legacy celebrated
through his status as National Artist for Music.
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

5. Ryan Cayabyab
Ryan Cayabyab, one of the most contemporary
and versatile figures in Philippine music,
blends a variety of musical influences, from jazz
and gospel to classical music and Filipino folk
traditions. His works, such as Kay Ganda ng
Ating Musika, Paraiso, and Alikabok, show his
wide-ranging talents as a composer, musical
director, and performer. Known for his innovation
and contributions to modern Filipino music,
Cayabyab is a significant figure in the Philippine
music scene, influencing not only classical music but
also popular and theatrical genres.
These composers, each with their unique style and
contributions, have helped to shape the Philippine
music landscape, blending Filipino traditions with
global musical influences and leaving a lasting
impact on both the local and international music
scenes.
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

IV. GENERALIZATION
In today’s lesson, we explored the contributions of key
Filipino composers from the 20th century, each of
whom played a pivotal role in shaping Philippine music.
These composers, including Francisco Santiago,
Nicanor Abelardo, Antonio Molina, Lucio San Pedro,
and Ryan Cayabyab, were able to blend traditional
Filipino musical elements with Western techniques,
creating a distinctive sound that reflects both local and
global influences.
We learned how Francisco Santiago earned the title
"Father of Kundiman" for his contributions to Filipino
traditional songs, while Nicanor Abelardo elevated the
Kundiman to an art song, comparable to Western
classical forms. Antonio Molina fused Romantic and
Impressionist styles, and Lucio San Pedro incorporated
folk elements into his music to express Filipino identity.
Lastly, Ryan Cayabyab's versatility brought a fusion of
genres, from classical to contemporary, influencing
both Filipino and international music scenes. The
integration of Western classical music with Filipino folk
traditions resulted in a unique form of expression that
is distinctly Filipino.
These composers not only shaped the development of
Filipino music but also laid the foundation for future
generations to build upon. Through this lesson, we
recognize the importance of understanding the
historical context and cultural significance of Philippine
music, as it continues to evolve and inspire musicians
worldwide. This exploration of Filipino composers helps
us appreciate how music reflects the evolving identity
of a nation and the enduring connection between
culture, history, and art.

“Today, we learned how Filipino composers blended “Francisco Santiago is known as the

Now, how do all these composers’ works reflect “They mixed Western influences with

“Exactly! Their works show how Filipino music has “These composers didn’t just create
