Introduction
Canara Bank is one of India's oldest and largest public
sector banks. Established in 1906, the bank has grown
from its humble beginnings in Mangalore, Karnataka,
into a premier financial institution with a wide array of
banking services and products. Canara Bank’s history,
governance, products, and its role in Indian banking
illustrate its significance in the country's financial
landscape.
History and Evolution
Canara Bank was founded by Shri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, a philanthropist,
with a vision to cater to the financial needs of the common man and promote
socio-economic development. Initially called the Canara Hindu Permanent Fund, it
was renamed Canara Bank Limited in 1910. Over the decades, the bank expanded
across India and internationally, reflecting its growing stature.

The bank was nationalized in 1969, along with several other major banks in India,
which led to an increased focus on rural banking, financial inclusion, and priority
sector lending. This step allowed Canara Bank to leverage government backing,
accelerating its growth in various financial sectors .
