Course Description:
The course would be a basic course in Engineering Physics with a focus on Work, Energy and their
applications in daily life. Fluid Mechanics and Its Significance is to be made clear. EM Waves and
Electricity and Magnetism are also the concern here. Different Magnetic Materials with technical
applications find their important place. Fiber Optics and Lasers are highly acknowledged. Solid State
Physics/Crystallography with X-Ray Radiography is also under brief discussion.

Unit A: Work, Energy and Fluid motion

Work and energy theorem, Conservative and non-conservative forces, Potential energy, Energy
diagram, Stable and unstable equilibrium, Gravitational potential energy, Elastic potential energy,
Types of fluids, Significance of fluid mechanics, Fluid properties, Pascal’s law, Surface tension and
capillarity, Continuity equation, Bernoulli’s equation.
Unit B: Electricity and Magnetism

EM Waves and Dielectrics: Relationship between electric field & potential, Dielectric polarization,
displacement current, Types of polarization, Maxwell’s equations, Equation of EM waves in free
space, Velocity of EM waves, Electromagnetic Spectrum (Basic idea)
Magnetic materials & Superconductivity: Basic idea of Dia, Para, Ferro &Ferri, Ferrites, Magnetic
anisotropy, Magnetostriction and its applications in production of Ultrasonic waves,
Superconductivity, Superconductors as ideal diamagnetic materials, Signatures of Superconducting
state, Type I & Type II superconductors.
Unit C: Optical Physics

Lasers: Spontaneous & Stimulated emissions, Einstein’s Coefficients, Population Inversion, Pumping
Mechanisms, Components of a laser System, Three& four level laser systems; Ruby, He-Ne, CO and

Fibre Optics: Introduction, Acceptance angle, Numerical aperture, Normalized frequency, Modes of
propagation, Material dispersion & pulse broadening in optical fibres, Fibre connectors, splices and
couplers, Applications of optical fibres.
Unit D: Basics of crystallography:

Unit cell, Basis, Space lattice, Crystal Systems, Miller Indices of Planes & Directions in cubic system,
