What do you mean by inclination of a line?
Straight Lines
What do you mean by inclination of a line?
The inclination of a line is the angle
which the part of line
Y above the x-axis
makes with the
positive direction of the x-axis,
measured in the
L anticlockwise direction.

θ THIS ANGLE θ IS
THE INCLINATION

Now, we are in a position to define slope/gradient of a line…

If θ is the angle of inclination of a non-vertical line then tangent of

angle θ is known as slope of that line.
Note: 0o < θ <180o
It is generally denoted by ‘m’

i.e. m=tanθ
Slope measures the steepness of a line
Straight Lines
Let us now discuss the relation between inclination of the
line and its slope for the following cases:
✶ When slope is positive-
In this case, m=tan θ > 0
thus θ lies b/w 0o and 90o
Thus θ is an acute angle

✶ When slope is negative-

In this case, m=tan θ < 0
thus θ lies b/w 90o and 180o
Thus θ is an obtuse angle
Straight Lines

✶ When slope is zero-

In this case, m=tan θ = 0
thus θ = 0
Thus line is x-axis or parallel to x-axis

✶ When slope is not defined-

In this case, m=tan θ = not defined.
which is possible when θ = 90o
Thus line is y-axis or parallel to y-axis

Q. Find the equation of the line through (–4, 7)

with slope -5.
Straight Lines
Solution:
Given point is: (-4, 7)
Slope = m = -5
Let (-4, 7) = (x1, y1)
We know that the equation of a line in point slope form is:
y – y1 = m(x – x1)
Substituting the values,
y – 7 = -5[x – (-4)]
y – 7 = -5(x + 4)
y – 7 = -5x – 20
5x + y – 7 + 20 = 0
5x + y + 13 = 0
Hence, this is the required equation of the line.

Straight Lines

Q. Given the slope of a line is 1/2, and it crosses the

y-axis at (0, -3). Find the equation of the line.
Straight Lines
Solution:
Given slope ‘m’ = 1/2,
Coordinates of a point on the y-axis where the
line crosses = (0, -3)
Therefore c = -3
Equation of the line: y = mx + c,
y =(1/2) x + (-3)
y = x/2 – 3
Hence, the equation of the line is y = x/2 – 3.
