Course objectives

• To provide an understanding of the concept of systems of

projection, standards and conventions.
• To develop the views of basic geometrical entities i.e. points,
lines, planes and solids.
• To impart skills in manual sketching and usage of modern
engineering tools necessary in engineering practice
• To acquire the skill of expressing three -dimensional and
two-dimensional objects into professional language and vice
versa
• To enable strong spatial visualization skills which are
important to an engineer's ability to create and interpret
technical drawings
At the end of the Course the students will be able to:
• CO1: Draw orthographic projections of basic geometrical entities
in various positions as well as Isometric projections
• CO2: : Develop 2D,3D models and lateral surfaces of solids.
• CO3: Use modern engineering tool (CAD software) necessary for
engineering visualisation
• CO4: Interpret and communicate with sketches and engineering
drawings with enhanced spatial visualization skills.
Engineering Drawing
The ability to imagine objects in 3D space, is one of
the most important skills for scientists and engineers.

People with extraordinary creativity often possess

outstanding ability to visualize, but with practice any
one can improve this skill.

Learning to visualize objects in space, to imagine

constructively, is something one can learn by
studying technical drawings.

Engineering sketching is a technique to improve the spatial thinking skills. It is also a

valuable tool to communicate the ideas quickly and accurately.

Graphical representation is often worth a thousand words. Compared to verbal or

written description, drawings offer far better idea about the shape, size & appearance of
any object or situation or location, that too in quite a less time.

In industrial design practices, designer sketches the ideas and it will often complete in a
final CAD drawing.

What is Engineering drawing?
A standard, systematic approach of representing the detailed description
of any object/component/process/location/system in the form of a drawing

Drawing standards

- BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)

- ISO (International Standards Organization)

Standards for,

- Drawing sheets

- Line types

- Lettering in drawing

- Dimensioning methods

- Arrows etc
Drawing sheet: (BIS standard)
Drawing paper is in the form of sheet or roll. Trimmed drawing paper is
called as drawing sheet. The designations of drawing sheet are : A0, A1,
A2, A3 and A4.
Layout of A2 size drawing sheet for assignment work:
Title block is necessary and fold the drawing sheet(six fold) as given below. “ALL
DIMENSIONS ARE IN mm” should be written above the title block. If any different scale is used
write that beneath the corresponding problem.

Dimension lines, Extension lines, Leader lines, Section lines and Centre

Scale
Drawing size : Actual size

1 : 1 - Full size scale

2 : 1, 3 : 1, …100 : 1 - Enlargement scale
1 : 2, 1 : 3, …1 : 100 - Reduction scale

Note :

1. Whatever the scale may be, the angle remains the same.

2. Whatever the scale may be, only the actual size should be mentioned in the drawing

while dimensioning.

3.If you use enlargement scale or reduction scale mention that beneath the corresponding

problem. Eg. SCALE : 2 : 1

Lettering Note:
* Lettering includes both
alphabets and numbers.
*Lettering should be done with
free hand and not with drawing
instruments.
*Both vertical and inclined
letters are in use.
*In an engineering drawing all
the letters must be in upper-case
and lower-case letters are used
for abbreviations.
* The scale (other than full size
scale) and required answers
should be written (with H
pencil) beneath the
corresponding problem taking
the size of letters (use vertical
capital letters) as 5 mm.
* Alphabets and numbers
should be obtained in single
stroke of the pencil.
