KIER BOILING AND

ENZYMATIC SCOURING
PROCESS SEQUENCE
B Y :
2 2 T 1 0 1 - A A S A I R A J A
2 2 T 1 0 2 - A T H I S . E
2 2 T 1 0 3 - D A R S H A N

2 2 T 1 0 5 - D H A R U N
Preparation of kier for scouring:

1) Rapid setting cement and sodium silicate with trace amount of

magnesium sulphate.
2) Throughly cleaned Kier is painted with the mixture and allowed for
drying for 24 hrs.
3) Then second coat
4) Then a solution of sodium silicate is sprayed on the surface
5) After 2 hrs of drying , a second spray is done
Piling of fabric into Kier:

1) Porcelain ring (dia -15 cm) and converted into rope form
2) Impregnated with alkaline liquor in a trough
3) Manually or by means of a mechanical piler.
4) A long trunk can move forward and backward .
5) Laid uniformly
6) To avoid creation of preferencial channels - heavy weights
Kier with buffer plate:

Steam is injected through a hole at the centre

puffer pipe (about 4-5 inch in diameter)
Residual steam blows the column of liquid in
the pipe
Curved baffle plate.
The liquor is then distributed
Withdrawn below the false bottom
Continuous circulation.
Kier with Steam injector:

Improved use of steam for both heating and

circulating
A steam nozzle is placed at the bottom
The orifice connected to the puffer pipe.
liquor from side pipe
Steam enters the nozzle
Kier with External heat
exchange:
External calorifier or heat-exchanger.
Centrifugal pump.
It is then sent to the top of the kier
Spread by the sprayer or distributed over the
material loaded in the Kier.
Before material is loaded, sufficient scouring
liquor should be run to cover the false
bottom.
Hot rinsing water is run simultaneously with
draining out of residual alkaline liquor.
Kier boiling :

Fabric - stationery
Liquor is pumped and circulated
Temp - above 105° C
Time - 6-8 hrs
Wetting agent is mandatory
Surface tension of grey fab - 24dynes/cm
Surface tension of water - 72 dynes/ cm
Surface tension of water after adding wetting agent - 30-40
dynes/cm
Disadvantages include Rope marks, being discontinuous process,
formation of salt during nueutralization.
Enzymatic scouring:
Enzymatic scouring:

Pectic substances consist of a polygalacturonic acid backbone.

Hydrolyse the glycosidic linkages
Polygalacturonic acid into water soluble galacturonic acid monomers

Auxiliary added:
1) surfactant
2) emulsifier
3) Raising post - treatment temperature to 70-75 °C
4) Mild heating before treatment.
Enzymatic scouring:

Chemicals used:
Pectinase
Cellulase
Calatase
Lipase
Enzymatic scouring:

1) Preparation
2)Selection of enzymes
3)scouring solution preparation
4)Enzyme scouring
5)Washing and rinsing
6) Neutralization
7)Drying
Enzymatic scouring:

Advantages:
Eco-Friendly
Energy Savings
Less Fiber Damage
Used for blends
Reduced water usage
Disadvantages:
Cost
Enzyme sensitivity
Enzyme Inactivation
