Interpreting the feelings of other people is not always easy, as we all know, and we (36) ___ as

and tone of voice are obvious ways of showing our reaction to something, and it may well be that
we unconsciously express views that we are trying to hide. The art of being (37) ___ lies in picking
up these signals, realizing what the other person is trying to say, and acting so that they are not
embarrassed in any way. For example, we may understand that they are in fact reluctant to answer
our question, and so we stop pressing them. Body movements in general may also indicate feelings,
and interviewers often pay particular attention to the way a candidate for a job walks into the room

employers want to know relates to the candidate’s character traits, and (38) ___ stability. This raises
the awkward question of whether job candidates should be asked to complete psychological tests,

being asked to take part in such a test would be an objectionable (39) ___ into their private lives.

If you go back far enough, everything lived in the sea. At various points in evolutionary history,
enterprising individuals within many different animal groups moved out onto the land, sometimes even
to the most parched deserts, (46)_________ and cellular fluids. In addition to the reptiles, birds,
mammals and insects which we see all around us, (47)________ include scorpions, snails, crustaceans
such as woodlice and land crabs, millipedes and centipedes, spiders and various worms. And we
mustn’t forget the plants, without whose prior invasion of the land, none of the other migrations could
have happened.
(48)____________, including breathing and reproduction. (49)____________, a good number
of thoroughgoing land animals later turned around, abandoned their hard-earned terrestrial re-tooling,
and returned to the water again. Seals have only gone part way back. (50)_______________, on the
way to extreme cases such as whales and dugongs. Whales (including the small whales we call
dolphins) and dugongs, with their close cousins, the manatees, ceased to be land creatures altogether
and reverted to the full marine habits of their remote ancestors. They don’t even come ashore to breed.
They do, however, still breathe air, (51)______________ to the gills of their earlier marine incarnation.
Turtles went back to the sea a very long time ago and, like all vertebrate returnees to the water, they
breathe air. (52)_____________, they are, in one respect, less fully given back to the water than whales
or dugongs, for turtles still lay their eggs on beaches.
(53)_____________ all modern turtles are descended from a terrestrial ancestor which lived before
most of the dinosaurs. There are two key fossils called Proganochelys quenstedti and Palaeochersis
talampayensis dating from early dinosaur times, (54)_____________ to the ancestry of all modern
turtles and tortoise. You might wonder how we can tell whether fossil animals lived in land or in water,
especially if only fragments are found. Sometimes it’s obvious. Ichthyosaurs were reptilian
contemporaries of the dinosaurs, with fins and streamlined bodies. The fossils look like dolphins and
they surely lived like dolphins, in the water. With turtles it is a little less obvious. (55)____________ is
by measuring the bones of their forelimbs.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.(56-60)
Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women in business,
the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number of women
entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more than $40 billion
in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the 1990s. As Carolyn
Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted, "The 1970s was the
decade of women entering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the woman
entrepreneur". What are some of the factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn
advanced degrees in business and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women are
still excluded from most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had noted, "In
the 1970s women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard they could become chairman of the
board. Now they've found out that isn't going to happen, so they go out on their own".
In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in "women's" fields: cosmetics and clothing, for
example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22-million-a-year computer
software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a housewife with
degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her first product was software
that let weekly newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers-and her office was a bedroom at
home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company's cash. After she succeeded with the
newspaper software system, she hired several bright computer-science graduates to develop
additional programs. When these were marketed and sold, ASK began to grow. It now has 200
employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million of stock.
Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do. They still face
hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the banking and finance world
is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most businesses owned by women are still quite
small. But the situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzigs in the years
ahead.

D. women today are opening more business of their own.
Question 57. All of the following were mentioned in the passage as detriments to women in the
business world EXCEPT .
A. women were required to stay at home with their families.
B. women lacked ability to work in business.
C. women faced discrimination in business.
D. women were not trained in business.
Question 58. According to the passage, Charlotte Taylor believes that women in 1970s .
A. were unrealistic about their opportunities in business management.
B. were still more interested in education than business opportunities
C. had fewer obstacles in business than they do today.

Parents, teachers, and others who deal closely with teenagers know how difficult the
adolescent years can be. Adolescents have always been known to do wild, even dangerous,
things. This was thought to be due to the “foolishness of youth”. Now, brain-imaging
technology allows scientists study the physical development of the brain in more detail than
ever before.
Recently, scientists discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of
six, they are far from fully developed. During adolescence, our brains go through great
changes, like a computer being upgraded. Such changes make us better at balancing impulses
with following rules. But a still- developing brain does this clumsily. The result, scientists
claim, is the unpredictable behavior seen in teens. The studies confirm that teens are more
likely to take risks and behave in extreme ways. Fortunately, the news isn’t all negative. As
brain scientists point out, the teen brain inspires such behavior in order to help teens prepare
for adult life.
One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens measure risk and reward. When
teens think about rewards, their brain release more of the chemicals that create pleasure than
an adult brain would. This makes the rewards seem more important than the risks, and make
teens feel the excitement of new experiences more keenly than adults do.
Research into the structure of the teen brain also found that it makes social connections seenm
especially rewarding. As teens, we begin to realize our peers may one day control the world
we live in. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends, which is
believed to make us more successful in life.
Unfortunately, this hunt for greater rewards can sometimes lead teens to make bad decisions.
However, it also means that teens are more likely, and less afraid, to try new things or to be
independent. The scientists’ findings suggest that in the long run, the impulses of the teen
brain are what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own lives successfully.

Đề 3 : Reading ( từ câu 66-75)
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on the answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 66 to 75.

For many years, scientists have speculated that the cataclysmic impact of an asteroid
with the earth was responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs approximately 65 million
years ago. Previous discoveries and results have hinted that an asteroid two kilometers in
diameter struck the Yucatan peninsula in Eastern Mexico. This impact, stronger than one
thousand nuclear explosions, is speculated to have cast a cloud of dust and debris into
the atmosphere, covering the entire surface of the earth and blocking out the sun and
consequently lowering the surface temperature of the earth. With such a radical change in
the earth's environment, scientists believe that over 99% of all animal and plant species
were eradicated. Only after millions of years did plants and animals even begin to
recover and develop into forms that were better adapted to survive changes in their
environment. But, the reign of the dinosaurs had ended and the age of mammals had
begun.
The crucial link that has held this theory together has been the element iridium.
Iridium is not commonly found on either the surface of the earth or inside the crust. It is
more commonly found in asteroids or meteorites throughout the solar system. Scientists
have hypothesized that after the asteroid impacted the Earth, an even layer of iridium
sediment settled over the globe and eventually became part of its surface. The theory, of
course, has depended on the discovery of such an existing layer of iridium.
Unfortunately, scientists have never been able to offer absolute proof that this
asteroid impact ever occurred. Recently, however, a discovery may go a long way
toward validating these scientists 'theories. In 1996, a team of marine biologists
excavated samples of rock from the Atlantic Ocean just off the cost of Bermuda. Found
thousands of meters below the sea, these samples contain iridium similar to those found
in the Yucatan peninsula thousands of kilometers away. At first, scientists were skeptical

KEY:

At first, scientists were skeptical
whether the samples were from the same time period. But since carbon dating placed
them to 65 million years ago, their doubts were quickly alleviated. Since then many of
the other theories for the demise of the dinosaur have been finally laid to rest.
