Expanded Plastics
• Low-density product.
• Commonly called “foam plastics”
 Polystyrene foam coffee cups, polystyrene foam packaging material.

Trapped air inside expand approximately twice or triple

their original volume during

Plastics

Unexpanded Plastics
• Solid high-density product
 Polyethylene film, polystyrene toys.

Do not expand and hold their volume.

Easily consumed by the fire.

Mixed Commodities
 Requirements not be based on the overall commodity mix.

 To be protected based on the highest classified commodity and storage

arrangement.

 Lower commodity class protection design shall be permitted to be utilized

where all of the following are met:

 Maximum 10 pallet loads of a higher hazard commodity to be

stored within an area NOT exceeding 40,000 ft2 (3716 m2).
 Higher hazard commodity to be randomly dispersed with no
adjacent loads in any direction (including diagonally).
 Maximum of 5 nos. of pallet loads for Class IV or Group A
plastics when ceiling protection is to be designed based on
Class I or Class II commodities

 Protection design for lower commodity class is permitted subject to:- -

- Protection is specifically utilized in the area for lower commodity
class,
- Higher hazard material is confined to a designated area where the
higher hazard protection design is in accordance with the
requirements of this standard. NFPA 13- 20.4.14

26 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Trends and Common Challenges in the Industry

• Build & Lease / Third Party Storage

• Commodity class yet to be determined

• Flexible Storage Arrangements

• Business Interruption

• Increased Insurance Premiums

27 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Design Challenges

The biggest challenge in sprinkler storage application is to:

 Find the correct commodity classification

 The most economical design

 Having a flexible and future proof solution

28 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Sprinkler storage applications
 Group A plastic arrangement

1. Non-Expanded
(cartoned or exposed)

2. Expanded
(cartoned or exposed)

29 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Cartoned or Exposed (Uncartoned)
NFPA13 - 3.3.22 Cartoned.
• Corrugated cardboard or paperboard containers
fully enclosing the commodity.

NFPA13 - 3.3.66 Exposed Group A Plastic Commodities.

• Plastics not in packaging or coverings.
• Absorbs water.
• Reduces the burning hazard of the commodity.

30 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Encapsulation
 Sides and top of a pallet load containing a combustible commodity completely
covered by plastic sheet

 Individually wrapped in plastic sheeting and stored exposed in a pallet load

 Plastic cover on top of the carton having holes/voids exceeding more than half
of the area of the cover, the term encapsulated does not apply

NFPA 13- 3.3.64, A.3.3.64

31 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Plastic Pallet Types
 Unreinforced plastic pallets
 Melt fairly easily in a fire and are less of a fire challenge
 Material
 Polypropylene (PP)
 High-density polyethylene (PE)

 Reinforced plastic pallets

 Hold their structure and integrity longer
 Fuels the flames and creates a more intense fire
 Material
 Polypropylene
 High-density polyethylene

32 Johnson Controls — Leader in Fire Suppression Solutions

Storing Materials on Plastic Pallets

 One class upgrade for unreinforced plastic pallets

 Class II → Class III
 Class IV → Group A Plastics

 Two class upgrade for reinforced plastic pallets

 Class II → Class IV
 Class IV → Group A Plastics

Option to avoid this Upgrade?
