Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression were a leading cause of global health problems even before the
spread of COVID-19; however, they’ve gotten worse. Since the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, anxiety and
depression rates worldwide have increased by an overwhelming 25%. In the U.S, 4 in 10 adults have reported symptoms
of anxiety or depression during the pandemic, compared with 1 in 10 from January to June 2019.
Among the most affected are young adults and women. The surge in people struggling with mental illnesses has
coincided with gaps in mental care services as well.
Research suggests that the pandemic has exacerbated the impacts of loneliness. Additionally, people’s fear of missing out,
also known as FOMO, hasn’t decreased even since in-person social gatherings became less frequent. But small daily
actions - such as a short walk, break from social media or even a catnap - can add up to have an impact on mental health.
3
Separately, counselling, therapy and medication prescribed by health care providers are effective treatments for those
experiencing mental illness.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
The average daily time spent online by adults increased by nearly an hour during the UK’s spring lockdown when
compared to the previous year, according to communications regulator Ofcom, with numerous countries back under
severe pandemic restrictions, many of us once again find ourselves questioning whether our heavy reliance on technology
is impacting our health.
It’s true that digital devices have provided new means of work, education, connection, and entertainment during
lockdown. But the perceived pressure to be online, the tendency to procrastinate to avoid undertaking tasks, and the use
of digital platforms as a way to escape stress all have the potential to turn healthy behaviours into habits. This repetitive
use can develop into addictive patterns, which can in turn affect a user’s wellbeing.
Digital addiction refers to the addictive and excessive use of digital devices. The design of digital platforms themselves
contributes to this addictive use. Notifications, news feeds, likes and comments have all been shown to contribute towards
a battle for your attention, which leads users to increase the time they spend looking at screens.
Screen time is an obvious measure of digital addiction, although researchers have noted that there is no simple way to
determine how much screen time one can experience before it becomes problematic. As such, there is a continued lack of
consensus on how we should think about and measure digital addiction.
During a global pandemic, when there often feels like no alternative to using Netflix, or video conferencing with friends
and family, screen time as an indicator of digital addiction is clearly ineffective. Nonetheless, research conducted on
preventing digital addiction does provide insights on how we can all engage with our digital technologies in a healthier
way during a lockdown.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Family conflicts within immigrant families can arise due to the challenges of adapting to a new culture, language
barriers, and generational differences. Immigrants often face the difficult task of reconciling their native customs and
traditions with those of the host country, while their children may adopt the values and practices of their new
surroundings.
One source of conflict stems from the fight between traditional values and the desire for adaptation. Parents may
hold the customs and beliefs of their homeland, while their children strive to conform to the norms of their new society.
7
This can lead to misunderstandings, disagreements, and a sense of cultural disconnection within the family.
Language barriers also contribute to family conflicts. Parents who are less proficient in the host country’s
language may struggle to communicate effectively with their children, resulting in misinterpretations and frustrations on
both sides. This can create a divide and hinder the development of strong familial bonds.
Generational differences further complicate matters. Children growing up in a new cultural environment may
adopt different attitudes, behaviours, and aspirations compared to their parents. Conflicts may arise when expectations
clash, such as in career choices, relationships, or educational pursuits.
To address these conflicts, open dialogue and mutual respect are vital. Family members should actively listen and
empathize with one another, striving to understand the unique challenges each individual faces. Cultivating an atmosphere
of acceptance and appreciation for both the native and host cultures can help bridge the gap and foster stronger familial ties.

B. Language barriers can badly affect familial bonds.
C. Children in immigrant families may have different opinions in career choices and relationships from their parents’.
D. Generational differences can make family conflicts worse.
Question 33: What is a suggested approach to addressing family conflicts within immigrant families?
A. Ignoring the cultural differences and focusing on career choices.
B. Promoting conformity to the norms of the host country.
C. Encouraging open dialogue and mutual respect.
D. Emphasizing the adoption of traditional values.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
For many years, knowing how to market to Millennials was the hot ticket for most marketers. Today, advertisers
are wrapping their heads around how to reach their younger counterparts, Gen Z - the generation that often feels like
they’re ahead of the rest of us.
While marketers are quickly shifting their attention to each incoming generation, they’re missing one key insight
that’s been bubbling beneath the surface: no generation is the same, but no one in a generation is the same, either.
People across every generation are defying norms more and more. More single women own houses than men.
Men are going back to college in their 60s. Early-career workers are leading the great resignation rather than taking
whatever job they can get after college. Women are delaying having children. And the list goes on.
The truth is, that people are “growing up” at different rates or redefining what it means to grow in the first place.
This variation inside generations creates a challenge for marketers, how do you market to changing peer groups?
Avoid ageism in your marketing
While this insight might sound obvious, it’s not obviously put into practice in marketing. For instance, one study
found that “variation in aging successfully or in lifestyles is not promoted in advertising.” Another survey from AARP
found that 69% of consumers ages 50 and older say media images are ageist. This could affect younger groups, too. New
research suggests ‘acute’ ageism could be an even bigger problem for younger cohorts.
Make your language more inclusive
How you refer to age groups or generations could keep customers (or top talent) away. Whether it’s women
reentering the workforce or retired professionals seeking returnships, these individuals want to go where they’ll feel like
they belong. And since your employees are a reflection of your company, one way to combat this is how you speak
internally.

Several cities are dealing with the crisis of overpopulation, causing a dearth of resources. Social and economical
imbalance among citizens creates problems in a community. As technology grows, the concept of Artificial Intelligence
and Internet of Things can be used into planning Smart cities which can gradually tackle several issues in a coexistent
society.
The building of a smart city requires large investments by the government. Nonetheless, it is one of the best
changes possible in lifestyles if done with conscious implementation. Smart cities are designed for optimum usage of
space and resources along with an efficient and optimum distribution of benefits. It also aims at increasing connectivity at
various levels among citizens, as well as between the administration and population. Public properties such as schools,
roads, and hospitals are improved. The system can tackle several redundancies of the present system and save time and
money. As technology is rapidly advancing, one can acknowledge that one needs to develop their lifestyles accordingly to
adapt to present-day demands.
Smart cities are meant to be environment-friendly. There are devices which can keep track of air purity level, as
well as other environmental and health-related factors. The investment in such a city should also include the maintenance
of a conscious work-force which shall review and amend the system. Therefore, a smart city shall only reach a wholesome

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
As we move closer to the futuristic cities, the demand for smart technology development and IT problem-solving
continues to grow. Although the number of developers and innovators tackling Smart City innovations is increasing, there
still remains a series of problems all developers face at some point or another in their solutions.
Smart cities utilise sensor technology to gather and analyse information in an effort to improve the quality of life
for residents. Sensors collect data on everything from rush hour stats to crime rates to overall air quality. Complicated and
costly infrastructure is involved in installing and maintaining these sensors. Besides, major metropolitan areas are already
challenged with replacing decades-old infrastructure, such as underground wiring, steam pipes, and transportation tunnels,
as well as installing high-speed internet. Broadband wireless service is increasing, but there are still areas in major cities
where access is limited. Funding for new infrastructure projects is limited and approval processes can take years.
Installing new sensors and other improvements cause temporary-though still frustrating-problems for people living in
these cities. Developers can help make it easier to install and utilise smart technology by considering these challenges at
the very early stages of development. By beginning with the end in mind, developers and tech companies can speed up the
process of making our cities smarter by implementing easy-to-install hardware.
12
In any major city, there’s a balance between quality of life and invasion of privacy. While everyone wants to enjoy
a more convenient, peaceful, and healthy environment, nobody wants to feel like they are constantly being monitored by
“Big Brother.” Cameras installed on every street corner may help deter crime, but they can also install fear and paranoia in
law-abiding citizens. Another valid concern is the amount of data being collected from all the smart sensors residents
come into contact with each day. Developers can help alleviate some of the anxieties of smart city residents by adding
transparency and education to their solutions. By developing with the community in mind and considering how they
might respond to new technology, companies can gain trust from the people whose solutions are intended to help. Of
course, local government officials and community boards need to be involved in the rollout and educational aspects as
well.
For a Smart city to truly exist and thrive, it needs “smart” citizens who are engaged and actively taking advantage
of new technologies, with any new city-wide tech project, part of the implementation process must involve educating the
community on its benefits. This can be done through a series of in-person town hall-style meetings and email campaigns
with voter registration, as well as an online education platform that keeps citizens engaged and up-todate.
When technology, city governance, and communities of people come together to improve the quality of life for
everyone involved, that’s when a city truly becomes “smart.”

In the future, cities may see flying vehicles, mega bridges, and underground space. Those cities will be controlled by
the Internet and the development of technologies. Technology will also be used to create a new quality of life in
wellplanned developments.
Transportation through tunnels will be more popular. Technology is much faster and cheaper today, so the city of the

I find it really exhilarating to think about the future. Technology is advancing so quickly that in 40 years, who knows
what amazing things we’ll be able to do? Scientists say that by 2050, there will be over ten billion people in the world,
and technology will have improved so much that we’ll have a lot more information about diseases and maybe even cures.
We’ll all be living in eco-friendly houses, no longer burdened by exorbitant electricity bills. And can you imagine? We
might even be able to go on vacations to Mars!
Our daily lives will be filled with new technologies that help us with things we hate doing now. We'll probably have
robots in our homes called "House Robo’s" that will help us with household chores like taking out the trash, cooking, and
cleaning the house. Even our kitchen gadgets like the fridge, cooker, microwave, and dishwasher will be "robotic” and
send us emails or texts when food is expired or running low. The fridge will even have a camera inside, so when we're at
the store, we can check what we need to buy.
They say that by 2050, we’ll have regular health check-ups at home using digital devices. These devices will scan our
bodies to check if we're sick or if anything is wrong. If they find something, a "virtual doctor" in the machine will figure
out what it is and give us treatment right away. If we need medicine, it will be ordered and sent to us automatically. If the
health check shows that someone is overweight, it will send a message to the household computer to change their diet and
schedule gym sessions. With such swift intervention, people will live significantly longer, as diseases and
cancers will no longer pose existential threats. Moreover, rare medical conditions of today will be better understood and
readily curable. (Adapted from scarlettlondon.com / what-will-life-be-like-in-2050)
