Theory
a) Fluorescent Lamp
The main parts of a fluorescent lamp are
1) Tube 2) starter 3) choke
Tube: The tube is filled with inert gas at low pressure. Inside the tube is coated with fluorescent
material. The colour of light given out according to the fluorescent material coated inside
the tube. At the two ends of the tube filaments are fitted which are coated with thorium
oxide that emits electrons when heated.
Starter: This is used to make and break the circuit. Starter consists of two electrodes. To one of
these a bimetallic strip is attached so that when heated by glow between the electrodes it
may make and break contact with other electrodes. There is a condenser connected
between the electrodes.
Choke: The tube to lighter up, a high voltage is required. But the voltage will be less than 230
V. The choke induces a high voltage and also adjusts the weakening of voltage after
starting.
Working: When the tube is connected to supply there is a glow between the electrodes in the
starter. The heated strip bends and touches the electrode thereby completing the circuit
and glow disappears. As a result, the strips cool and returns to the original position, thus
circuit breaks. The breaking of fuse induces a high voltage of 1000 volt on the choke.
The high voltage causes the flow of electrons through the tube and the flow appears.
After the tube begins to flow, the choke comes in series with the circuit. The voltage
across the tube becomes the supply voltage.
b) Ceiling fan
A fan is used to circulate air (or moves air) in a confined area which gives feeling
of cooling. It works on the principle of Induction motor. A single phase motor is not a
self -starting method hence some special arrangement is required in order to make the
motor to start & run. Split phase method single phase motor is used in ceiling fan where
capacitor is used for starting & running the motor.
It consists of two windings which are placed 900 electrical apart on the stator of the
motor. The main winding is connected directly across the line & the starting winding is
connected to the line through a static capacitor of suitable value. The function of
capacitor is to provide phase shift (as capacitor in aux winding leads the current in aux
winding) with respect to main winding) when single phase ac supply is applied to the
motor, two emfs at 900 displaced in time phase are produced in two windings which
causes a rotating magnetic field is produced. A capacitor produces high starting torque
in the motor.
In ceiling fan motors where motor starts under zero load & low torque is required to
operate the motor, a capacitor is permanently connected in series with auxiliary winding
for both starting & running purpose. Therefore, we can say that a permanent capacitor
motor is used in ceiling fan motor. That is why when capacitor gets burst, motor doesn’t
work as required torque is not produced.

5. Remove insulation (10mm approx.) at each wire ends for terminal connections
6. Fix the round block, Ceiling Rose, switch box Fuse unit and Neutral link at the specified
points.
7. Connect the wire ends to Switches, 3 Pin Socket, Ceiling rose, Fuse unit, Neutral Link
etc. (do not over tight the screws)
8. Fix the Florescent Lamp frame set on the work board and connect to ceiling rose
9. Insert Fluorescent lamp in socket on frame
10. Connect Fan Regulator
