Once upon a time, a poor miller lied to the king, saying his daughter could turn straw into gold. The king
locked the girl in a room full of straw and told her to spin it into gold or stay there forever. The girl cried
because she didn’t know how.
Suddenly, a little man appeared and offered to help if she gave him her necklace. She agreed, and
tomorrow morning, the straw was gold. The king was amazed and locked her in a bigger room with
more straw. The little man returned, and she gave him her ring in exchange for turning the straw into
gold.
The next day, the king locked her in an even bigger room. This time, the little man asked for her first
child as payment. She agreed, and the straw turned into gold again. Then, the king made her his queen.
After she had a baby, the little man returned to take the child. The queen begged to keep her baby, so
the little man said she could keep it if she guessed his name in three days.
Once, the queen guessed wrong. Twice, the queen’s guess was wrong again. Then, a messenger
overheard the little man saying his name, Rumpelstiltskin. On the third day, the queen guessed correctly,
and the angry little man disappeared forever.
