Ross: Once you start the conversation, there’s a couple of basic
directions you can go. You can go playful with a game or a quiz, or
you can start with being curious and then go to playful. You can go
from playful to curious.
I’m going to give you two basic ways you can start. You can start by
being playful or you can start by being curious. If you start with
being curious, then I want you to go to playful. If you start from
being playful, I want you to go to curious.
Guess what? You can go back and forth between these two. What
works best for me is when I go back and forth between those two
things. I’m playful, then I’m curious; I’m curious, then I’m playful.
Playful, curious, curious, playful.
Would you like some specific ways to be playful, some specific
techniques?
Let’s say we’re in some situation where you feel comfortable
meeting someone new, whatever it is. We’re in a fun social
situation and I just started talking to her. We chit-chat. It’s perfectly
okay to insert what I call fluff talk. Fluff talk is just talking about
everything. Just chit-chat, blah, blah, blah.
This is a demonstration: “Hey, I heard this really, really fun little
game at a party I was at last week. You look like you like to play
and have fun. Do you want to play a little bit? You’ll enjoy it.”

Participant: Okay.
Ross: It’s called Twin Brothers. You meet twin brothers at a social scene,
party, or someplace where you feel totally comfortable really
wanting to meet people. They’re identical twins, so each one looks
exactly like the kind of guy where – you ever look at a guy and you
think, “Hmmmm<.”? They’re identical in that respect. They’re both
identically attractive in a way where maybe you think to yourself,
“Hmmmm<” or whatever it is you might think when you see a really
attractive person.
One of them is an incredibly good dancer. He just really knows how
to dance. But the other one, he just has really, really good hands.
He knows how to use his hands. Which one of the two would you
find yourself starting to feel a really strong attraction for? Which one
of the two would you think, “He’s a little bit more interesting to me”?
Participant: The one dancing. I’d feel more comfortable.
Ross: I’m not saying that by any means he would start touching you right
away. Not at all. I’m just saying, as things progress, sometimes you
really want to be touched.
Would you still prefer the dancer?
Participant: Maybe the hands.

Ross: I have to say that I agree. It’s very important to me when I’m with
someone where I really feel a very strong connection. It’s very
important to me that the person knows how to touch me in a way
where you really want to be touched.
Same twin brothers. One of them is incredibly funny. Do you know
what it’s like when you’re with someone and they just really know
how to make you laugh out loud? One of them is incredibly funny,
but the other is a scandalously good kisser. Which one do you think
you’d really want to find yourself being with?
Participant: I don’t know. I really like funny people. I could teach a man to kiss
properly.
Ross: Really?
Participant: Maybe.
Ross: I think what I hear you saying is there’s a way where kissing isn’t so
good, and then there’s a way where it’s really, really proper.
Final one. One of the guys has more money than you could ever
imagine spending in ten lifetimes, but the other one makes you feel
like you are the most adored.
Participant: I’d definitely pick the one that makes me feel good.

Ross: It’s really important to feel really good when you’re with someone. I
agree with you. I think you said after you’d get to know them, you’d
prefer the hands. If you were to meet someone who had really
great hands and really knew how to make you laugh and someone
who made you feel absolutely adored, what do you think it is about
you that would make this person want to keep coming back for
more? What is really special about you?
Participant: I don’t know. I don’t think I am.
Ross: You don’t think you are?
Participant: No, I don’t.
Ross: Really? I don’t agree with that.
Participant: I think I’m kind and friendly.
Ross: I think those are really, really good things.
Let me just add a few things in. She’s obviously only at a very
certain level of comfort with me. She’s here on stage. But if she
were really getting into the game and really playing with me, I would
sexualize it. I won’t do it with here out of respect for her.

For example, let’s say she talked about being funny. I’d say, “I
agree. I had this friend and she would make me laugh so hard – so
unbelievably hard – that you would just fall to the floor and couldn’t
stop doing it.” But I wouldn’t sexualize it with you that way because
that would be wrong.
What did I just do there?
I would build on it more, depending on how comfortable the person
was and depending on what my state is. Thank you. You’ve been
very sweet.
You can practice doing one of those things. You could do a game
or a quiz. Are you a roller, folder, or thrower? Just for fun.
Then what I suggest you do once you start talking back and forth is
start to get curious. There’s just a couple of basic ways you can do
that. One thing you can do is say, “So when you really want to cut
loose and indulge yourself and just have the best time, what do you
love to do?” Let them answer. Then say, “What’s your favorite part
of that?” Then you can begin to feed the answer back.
In between doing “patterns” it’s perfectly okay to go back to a
normal conversation and just talk and show genuine interest. I think
showing genuine curiosity about another person builds something.
There’s something in there.

Participant: And then after sexualize?
Ross: This is all linked together. Part of what I’m doing is testing to see
how responsive they are to suggestion. At one point, she finally did.
I asked, “So you can train a guy a guy to kiss?” I think I said
something like when you train someone to kiss, that’s when they
really know what they’re doing.
Sometimes I change to subject. “Anyway, when you were a little
girl, was there some kind of candy that was the king of your candy
castle?” Sometimes what I’ll do is change the focus of attention.
Will you come back up for just a minute? By the way, I invite you to
notice how each and every time you come back up here, you’re just
a little bit more comfortable. Or maybe you’re just a little bit more
excited or maybe you’re having some other response. Any
response you have is okay.
What was I saying?
Participant: Everything is linked.
Ross: Yes, everything is linked. What else did I say? Let’s say she and I
are talking at some social event. I wouldn’t stand directly. I’d stand
at a little bit of an angle and talk.

At some point in the conversation, I might turn our attention. I’d
fractionate or vary the direction of attention. I’d go, “You know what
game I like play where there’s a lot of people? Do you ever like to
people watch?”
Participant: Yeah.
Ross: Do you really? Are you serious? Is this when they don’t know you’re
watching or through a window?
Participant: I’d say all the time.
Ross: You do?
Participant: Yeah.
Ross: Cool! In a social situation like this, I like to play “What’s His Chat-Up
Line?” I like to look at a guy and guess. What do you think his chat-
up line is? I’ll start. You see that guy over there in the top hat? I
think his chat-up line is, “Are you Jamaican? Because Jamaican me
crazy.” Isn’t that stupid? That is just so ridiculous. Pick another guy
and I’ll tell you what his chat-up line is. Just pick someone out.
You know what I think his chat-up line is? “Are you from
Tennessee? Because you’re the only ten I see.” What an idiot!

I’m curious. If you saw a guy here who you really wanted to meet,
do you think he’d just sit there and really begin to feel that attraction
towards him and just sit there and say nothing or would you feel the
attraction and do something about it?
Participant: I’d say nothing.
Ross: You’d say nothing? You’d just sit there and stew in it?
Participant: Mm-hmm.
Ross: If you were really, really beginning to feel whatever that flow of
feeling is that lets you know that you’re starting to feel something
for someone, do you think your girlfriends could tell or do you think
you could hide it from them?
Participant: They’d probably know.
Ross: They’d probably know?
Participant: Yeah, and I’m probably tell them.
Ross: You’d tell them?
Participant: Yes. But that person, no.

Ross: He wouldn’t know?
Participant: No, he wouldn’t know.
Ross: Wow.
Participant: It would be like one of those when you’re young and at school and
boys are horrible to you that like you, aren’t they? Do you know
what I mean?
Ross: They are?
Participant: Yeah. In school the boy that liked you weren’t very nice to you.
Ross: They weren’t?
Participant: No.
Ross: I think that’s terrible. I think when you really, really like someone,
you should let them know. You should be kind to them.
Participant: What if they go, “Oh, no.”
Ross: What do they go what?

Participant: That’s why I don’t want, because I don’t want them to say that at all.
Ross: Really?
Participant: Yeah. So I just keep it to myself.
Ross: Okay, stop. Don’t move. Don’t change your posture. Don’t change
anything. I’m asking you to just freeze. Look at the way you’re
sitting. Just look. And look at the way I’m sitting. What do you
notice?
Participant: That you’re copying.
Ross: Actually, I wasn’t deliberately copying at all. I wasn’t. I was not
deliberately copying. That’s being in rapport. I did not deliberately
copy at all. In fact, I think I actually went first with my posture.
Participants: You did.
Ross: I actually think she was following me. I shifted.
Participant: No, I think you did. You felt how uncomfortable I am.
Ross: Are you uncomfortable up here?

Participant: Not that I’m up here. Just talking in general about it, or space.
Ross: Oh, the subject. I understand. This is for fun and play purposes. It’s
not anything serious.
