Remember that to be able to form the past tense of the verb, you need to first conjugate the
verb from dictionary form to basic form. The conjugation must follow the rules. (See Attached
Learning Support Attachment at the end of this worksheet).
See below how the sentence “It is small.” is converted into past tense “it was small.”
Example is the word SMALL.
So, to convert this to past tense:
First, the word small 작다. In conjugating this dictionary form 작다 or “to be small”, look for
the last vowel. In this case, the last vowel for 작다 is ㅏ from 작 (disregard 다). The basic
form rule says that if the ending vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ , and it has batchim or final
consonant, you should add 아. So, 작다 will become 작아, or “small”.
After conjugating, you may now use this basic verb form to convert it into past
tense, as shown above.
Accomplish the following by writing the Korean translation of each of the following
sentences: (55 points)

2 Friday was hot.
3 That gimbap was spicy.
4 This book was difficult.
5 There wasn’t a cat.
6 I went to school.
7 My father went to Seoul.
8 The dog came here.
9 I went on Tuesday.

C. PRESENT TENSE. Take note that BASIC FORMS of verbs or conjugated verbs are
already present tense, or they could be used for future tense depending on how it is
used. The conjugated verb 가요 (go) can be used in present or in future depending on
how it used in the sentence.
Rewrite the following from English to Korean. 20 points

D. FUTURE TENSE. To form the future tense, use the following guide (which is also available in

To form the future tense, just proceed on conjugating the verb into basic verb form and if the
verb ends with vowel, just add ㄹ after the vowel plus 거예요. If the verb ends with consonant, add
을 after the consonant plus 거예요. (See the tables above)
