Places Where People Live (Settlements)

Introduction to Settlements

 Settlements are places where people live together. People live in settlements
because it makes life easier. They can share resources, help each other, and live near
jobs, schools, and shops.
 There are different types of settlements:
 Farms: Farms are in rural areas with open land. People live far apart, and most work
in agriculture, growing crops or taking care of animals. For example, in South Africa,
farms are common in the Free State, where people grow maize.
 Villages: Villages are small communities where houses, schools, and shops are closer
together. People in villages often know each other. An example is Mahlabathini in
KwaZulu-Natal.
 Towns: Towns are bigger than villages and have more facilities like banks, clinics, and
factories. An example is Ladysmith in South Africa.
 Cities: Cities are the largest settlements with tall buildings, offices, hospitals, and
many schools. People from different areas come to cities for jobs and education.
Johannesburg is one of South Africa's busiest cities.
Jobs in Different Places
Jobs vary depending on the type of settlement:
 Farms: Farmers grow food like vegetables, maize, and fruit. Animal carers take care
of livestock, such as cows and chickens.
 Villages: Villages have shopkeepers who sell groceries and teachers who educate
children.
 Towns: Towns have more opportunities. People work as bankers, factory workers,
or in offices.
 Cities: In cities, people often have professional jobs like doctors, engineers, and
scientists.
 Each settlement provides jobs that support the community and help it grow.

Activity : Introduction to Settlements

Draw your ideal place to live and label it with what jobs people might do there.
Buildings and Their Uses
Buildings in settlements have different purposes:
 Homes: People live in houses, flats, or huts.
 Shops: Shops provide food, clothes, and other goods.
 Schools: Children learn and grow in schools.
 Clinics and Hospitals: These buildings help people stay healthy.
 Animal Shelters: Farmers build barns and stables for animals.
 Factories: Factories are where goods like clothes, cars, and food are made.
 Banks and Offices: Banks keep money safe, and offices are places where people
work.
 Places of Worship: Churches, mosques, and temples are for prayer and
gatherings.
 Train Stations and Garages: Train stations help people travel, and garages repair
vehicles.
 In South Africa, these buildings are found in all types of settlements, helping people
meet their needs.

Roads and Footpaths

Roads and footpaths connect buildings and make movement easy.
Roads: Cars, buses, and trucks use roads to transport people and goods. In towns and
cities, roads are busy with traffic.
Footpaths: Footpaths are for people walking. In villages, there may be more footpaths
than roads.
Road safety is important. People should use sidewalks, cross at pedestrian crossings, and
follow traffic rules. Roads and paths make it easier for people to meet, trade, and access
services.
Navigating and Meeting Needs

Identifying Landmarks and Planning Journeys

Landmarks are things that stand out and help people find their way.
 Natural Landmarks: Mountains, rivers, and trees, like Table Mountain in Cape
Town.
 Human-Made Landmarks: Buildings, bridges, and statues, like Nelson Mandela
Bridge in Johannesburg.
When giving directions, use simple words like "left," "right," "straight," and street names.
For example, "Turn left at the church and go straight to the school."

What People Need to Live

 People need certain things to live comfortably:
 Water: Clean water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
 Food: Communities grow crops or buy food from shops.
 Shelter: Homes protect people from bad weather and danger.
 Healthcare: Clinics and hospitals provide medicine and care.
 Energy: Electricity or firewood is used for cooking, heating, and lighting.
In South Africa, rural areas often collect water from rivers, while cities have taps in every
home. Communities find different ways to meet their basic needs, working together to build
a better life.
