INTRODUCTION
Lesson 3: Various Contemporary Art Forms
Contemporary art emerged in the Philippines in reaction to social and cultural
realities during the 1970’s. The art was an offshoot of social realism brought about
by Martial Law. Arts became expressions of people’s aspiration for a just, free, and
sovereign society.
Contemporary art generally refers to art being created now. Art is important
in our existence and everyone will experience and enjoy. We can only appreciate
art if we can really understand the meaning of an artwork. Local traditions, history,
and contemporary issues influence the creation of art. Contemporary art poses
questions and critiques of society, everyday life, and concerns of the day. Also,
contemporary artworks utilized public spaces and emphasize the participation of the
audience. It feeds on new technologies, which offer different and new ways of
conceptualizing, producing, and displaying art. Can you identify examples of art
forms which you encounter in everyday life? How are these art forms relevant to
you?
In this module, we will discuss about the different contemporary art forms in
the Philippines and appreciate its function in our modern society.
Let’s get started. Please do your best to
accomplish the succeeding activities. It will only take
you couple of minutes.

VARIOUS CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS
Music: OPM (Original Pop Music)
OPM refers to popular contemporary music in the Philippines. Ryan
Cayabyab’s noteworthy composition “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka” was a hit song
and made him won the 18th Awit Awards as Best Musical Arrangement. This song
10
was also popularized by the different versions like Regine Velasquez’s birit-indulgent
take, Eraserhead’s beat-up rendition, to Moira dela Torre’s whispery version. There
are countless versions as belted out in the karaoke microphone, or performed on
stages big or small. These versions that add variety were done to communicate it to
the current setting or time. Notable artist also include Sarah Geronimo who is
referred to as “Popstar Royalty” and “Queen of Philippine Pop”. Her most popular
song was “Tala” which was released last 2015 and 3 years after it became one of the
most played OPM songs of 2016 obtained a new level of popularity in the latter half
of 2019 because of its iconic choreography. The music video reached 19M views
with 8.9K comments on YouTube. Many online users wanted to perfect the dance
and accepted the Tala dance challenged on Tiktok.
Dance: SWAG
Contemporary Philippine dance was influenced by contemporary dance in the
West. Later developments in Philippine dance brought about new ideological modes
and stylistic approaches which incorporate innovative movements. It is a style of
expressive dance that combines elements of several genres including modern, jazz,
and lyrical to create a beautiful style of dance filled with emotion. It stresses
versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. It can be
danced to almost any style of music or united with other dance forms to create new
styles of movement. In contemporary dance there is contract and release and also
involves floor work. Dancer allows himself to be pulled down to the floor of gravity. It
is more of a free form and is often raw and thought-provoking taking the audience on
an emotional journey.
Theater: PROTEST THEATER
11
The Filipino playwrights adopted realism as a style in theater arts. The
social realism is a naturalistic realism focusing specifically on social issues and the
hardships of everyday life. Protest theatre is a theatre that comments on political and
social issues. Teatro Pabrika is a theater group of the worker’s sectors which
dramatizes issues related to wage increase, worker’s benefits, management and
government’s policies towards labor. The group draws members and target
audiences from the same sector. Their expenses are kept for a minimum because
they often do not need costumes and because they have to keep their plays portable
(no sets and absolute minimum props). They performed “Kabuhayang Tagpi-tagpi”
which is a merry mix of songs and dialogue on wage earners’ struggle to make ends
meet as they cope with rising prices. It is a play that is greatly admired and
recognized not only in the labor sector but also in other sectors of society. They are
known not only in the Philippines but also abroad especially in Japan as selected
members were invited to perform and provide training there. They earned 1 st Price
from Critics - a group of theatre reviewer in the Philippines.
Cecile Guidote-Alvarez advocates the use of theater in inspiring change and
development in the society.
Visual Arts: ASSEMBLAGE
It is a form of sculpture comprised of "found" objects arranged in such a way
that they create a piece. It could be from everyday objects like scraps of wood,
stones, old shoes, cans, and etc. This is coined by the artist Jean Dubuffet.
Filipino sculptor Federico Pete Jimenez , known since 2000 for using found
metal objects from junk shops, what most of us see as useless, and transforming
them into interesting sculpted metal objects. “Guest Speaker” is one of his art works
wherein he used an old pair of shoes paired with discarded gasoline tank of a
12
motorcycle and combined with an old manual water pump.
Assemblage art reflects and amplifies the passing nature of the material from
which it is created, reimagining the intent and purpose of the discarded
original. Creating art works from recyclable objects. The combination of components
explores relationships, often awkward and frequently complicated, bringing fresh
intent through suggestive composition.
Literature: SPOKEN WORD/POETRY
Mainstream interest for spoken word poetry was ignited with the works of
Sarah Kay, Kate Tempest, and many others. Today, spoken word has penetrated
media and more recently, social media platforms such as Youtube, reaching a much
bigger audience. Spoken word, after all, goes beyond traditional poetry in the sense
that it is not measured merely by meter and rhyme. It allows an individual more
freedom when it comes to construction and self-expression thus making it appealing
even to the masses. Spoken word in the Philippine context is a relatively new trend.
In 2005, FM station Jam 88.3 introduced Bigkas Pilipinas, the first spoken word radio
show in the country. Homegrown artists who love expressing their thoughts through
pen and performance art will benefit spoken word. Speak! Philippines is a community
of a spoken word artists sharing ideas and it was formed in March 2013 in which
facebook is their main portal of communication and hopes of helping make spoken
word-friendly events, slams, and open mic nights more accessible to poets and
artists in the Philippines. Spoken poetry is an avenue to voice feelings and opinions
in a creative for individuals and communities to address different social realities of
the current times. Themes could be love, women, politics, and other things that affect
society. Thus, the significant function of spoken poetry is social impact.
Film And Broadcast: INDIE FILMS
13
Cinema One Originals is a film festival held every November. Its mission is to
showcase the talents and diverse voices of the Filipino independent film.
The independent film is a feature or short film that is produced outside the
major film studio system. Filipino indie films utilized current technology in film and
are usually made with considerably low budgets than major film studio. It provides
fresh content which the studios or mainstream are lacking. Among the advantages of
independent films: freedoms to do what you want, have closer connection with fans,
100 % profits, and could go viral through facebooks. “That Thing Called Tadhana”
was originally an entry to the Cinema One Originals Film Festival on 2014, the
romantic-comedy by Antoinette Jadaone and was nominated Digital Film Festival
Best Picture. It also won 3rd Place for Dulang Pampelikula (Screenpaly) for 2014
Palanca Awards.
Architecture: MODERN BAHAY KUBO/COTTAGES
According to the National Artist for Architecture Francisco Mañosa, Philippine
climate calls for tropical architecture whose features include accommodations to the
wet and dry seasons. These features include high ceilings, large windows, low eaves
and overhangs to provide both shade and protection from the sun and rain.
Today, the architectural features of bahay kubo houses are in neovernacular
style in which the structure is a combination of modern materials of new technologies
and processed indigenous materials. Standard-sized coco lumbers are used as
posts, secured with concrete foundations. This foundation makes the structure
durable. The Filipino modern design use modern glass for windows like the sliding
and the windows so sunlight can easily pass through. Also, many beach resorts use
14
nipa huts as cottages for guests, and large modern houses use open nipa structures
as cozy extension of their living rooms. This type of structure not just provides
comfort but is also a low-cost budget that most Filipino family would choose.
Example: Pearl Farm cottages in Davao City
