Algebraic Expressions and Identities
Terms are added to form expressions. Terms themselves can be formed as the product of
factors. The numerical factor of a term is called its numerical coefficient or simply
coefficient.

Monomials, Binomial and Polynomial

Expression that contains only one term is called a monomial. Expression that contains
two terms is called a binomial. An expression containing three terms is a trinomial. An
expression containing, one or more terms with non-zero
coefficient (with variables having non negative integers as
exponents) is called a polynomial. A polynomial may
contain any number of terms, one or more than one.

Examples of monomials: 4x, 3y, –7z, 10y, –9

Examples of binomials: a + b, 4l + 5m

Examples of trinomials: a + b + c, 2x + 3y – 5

Examples of polynomials: a + b + c + d, 3xy, 7xyz – 10, 2x + 3y + 7z

Degree of a Polynomial

The highest or greatest exponent of the variable in a polynomial is known as the degree of
a polynomial. The degree is used to determine the maximum number of solutions of a
polynomial equation .

• The degree of 2x2y4 is 2 + 4 = 6 and

• The degree of 7x2y is 2 + 1 = 3
• Among these, 6 is the bigger number and hence it is the degree of the polynomial
2x2y4 + 7x2y.
Important identities:

Q.1) Determine the terms, coefficient and factors of the algebraic expressions.

• 5xy – 2yz – 2zx + 10xyz

• pq + qr – rp

Q. 2) Determine the degree of x3+4x5+5x4+2x2+x+5

Q.3) Using identities solve the following:

• (2x + 3y)2
• (4p – 3q)2
• (6x – 7) (6x + 7)
• 297 × 303
• (998)2

Q. 4) Factorize the following :

• 4x2 + 12x + 5
• y2 + 16y + 60
• x2 − 11x + 24
Linear Equations in One Variable
A linear equation in one variable is an equation which has a maximum of one variable of
order 1. It is of the form ax + b = 0, where x is the variable.

This equation has only one solution. A few examples are:

• 3x = 1
• 22x-1=0
• 4x+9=-11

Standard Form of Linear Equations in One Variable

The standard form of linear equations in one variable is represented as:

ax + b = 0

Where,

• ‘a’ and ‘b’ are real numbers.

• Both ‘a’ and ‘b’ are not equal to zero.

Thus, the formula of linear equation in one variable is ax + b = 0.

Let’s look at the following examples:

➢ x–2=7 ➢ y + 3 = 10 ➢ 6=z+2
x–2=7 y + 3 = 10 6=z+2
x=7+2 y = 10 –3 z+2=6
x=9 y=7 z = 6-2
z=4
➢ 3/7 + x = 17/7 ➢ 6x = 12 ➢ 2x/3 = 18

3/7 + x = 17/7 6x = 12 2x/3 = 18

x = 17/7 – 3/7 x = 12/6 2x = 18 × 3

x = 14/7 x=2 2x = 54

x=2 x = 54/2

x = 27

Q.1) Solve the following linear equations:

I. 7x – 9 = 16 IV. 4z + 3 = 6 + 2z

II. 14y – 8 = 13 V. 5x + 9 = 5 + 3x

III. x/3 + 1 = 7/15 VI. 2x – 1 = 14 – x

VII. 5t – 3 = 3t – 5 VIII. 3x = 2x + 18

Q.2) The base of an isosceles triangle is 4/3 cm. The perimeter of the triangle
is cm. What is the length of either of the remaining equal sides

LINES AND ANGLES

Types of Lines and Angles

There are various types of lines and angles in geometry based on the measurements and
different scenarios. Let us learn here all those lines and angles along with their
definitions.

Types of Lines
Lines are basically categorized as:

• Line segment
• Ray

Based on concepts or operations performed on lines, they are;

• Parallel Lines
• Perpendicular Lines
• Transversal
Line Segment
A line segment is a part of a line with two end-points. It is the shortest distance between
two points and has a fixed length.

Ray
A ray is a part of a line, which has a starting point and extends infinitely in one direction.

Perpendicular Lines
When two lines form a right angle with each other, by
meeting at a single point, are called perpendicular
lines. In the figure, you can see, lines AB and CD are
perpendicular to each other.

Parallel Lines
Two lines are said to be parallel when they do not
meet at any point in a plane or which do not
intersects each other. In the figure, lines PQ and RS
are parallel to each other.

Transversal Line
When a line intersects two lines at distinct points, it is
called a transversal. In the figure, a transversal l is
intersecting two lines at point P and Q.
TYPES OF ANGLES

Transversal Angles
When a transversal line passes through the two parallel lines, different angles are formed

• Corresponding angles

∠1 = ∠5, ∠2 = ∠6, ∠3 = ∠7 and ∠4 = ∠8

• Alternate Interior Angles

∠3 = ∠6 and ∠4 = ∠5

• Alternate Exterior Angles

∠1 = ∠8, and ∠2 = ∠7

• Vertically Opposite Angles

∠1 = ∠4, ∠2 = ∠3, ∠5 = ∠8 and ∠6 = ∠7.

Angle Sum Property of a Triangle Theorem
Angle sum property of triangle states that the sum of interior angles of a triangle is 180°.

Q.1) In the figure, lines PQ and RS intersect at point O. If ∠POR : ∠ROQ = 5 : 7, find
all the angles.

Solution:

From the given figure,

∠POR +∠ROQ = 180° (linear pair of angles since PQ is a straight line)

Also, given that,

∠POR : ∠ROQ = 5 : 7

Therefore, ∠POR = (5/12) × 180° = 75°

Similarly, ∠ROQ = (7/12) × 180° = 105°

Now, ∠POS = ∠ROQ = 105° (vertically opposite angles)

∠SOQ = ∠POR = 75° (vertically opposite angles)

Q. 2) In the below figure, if AB || CD, ∠APQ = 50° and ∠PRD = 127°, find x and y.
Q.3) If AB || CD, CD || EF and y : z = 3 : 7, find x from the below figure.

Q.4) In each of the following figures, Find. the value of

Q.5)

DATA HANDLING
Data handling means to collect and present the data so that it could be used in further
studies and to find some results.

Data
Any information collected in the form of numbers, words, measurements, symbols, or in
any other form is called data.

Organizing Data
Any data which is available in the unorganized form is called Raw Data.
This raw data is arranged or grouped in a systematic manner to make it meaningful
which is called the Presentation of Data.

Terms Related to Data Organizing

1. Frequency
Frequency tells us the no. of times a particular quantity repeats itself.
2. Frequency Distribution Table
Frequency can be represented by the frequency distribution table.
The above table shows the no. of times a particular colour repeat in the bag of skittles.
Frequency can also be shown by the tally marks. A cut over four lines represents the
number 5.

Graphical Representation of Data

The grouped data can be represented graphically for its clear picture and it is the easiest
way to understand the data.
Types of Graph

1. Pictograph
When we represent the data
through pictures or symbols
then it is called Pictograph.

Here one tree represents 10

trees. And we can easily read
the pictograph.
The graph shows that there are
30 trees of apple and so on.

2. Bar Graphs
In the bar graph, the information represented by the bars of the same width with equal
gaps but the height of the bars represent the respective values.

Here, the names of pets are

represented on the
horizontal line and the
values of the respective pets
are shown by the height of
the bars. There is an equal
gap between each bar.

people who were lonely and sick. Their children had left them to fend for themselves.
When you talked to them, you felt bad about the fact that they were not living with
their children. Write about your experiences in your diary.

Answer:
Friday, 30th November, 20XX 7:30 pm

Dear diary,
Today, I visited an old age home. I was surprised to see the condition of the old
people there. Even though the medical facilities and food were good, it was
disheartening to see that most of them were under depression. Their children had
abandoned them. Some had forcefully kicked them out of the house. So now, they
have nowhere to go.
When I talked to them, my heart was filled with sympathy for them. What could I do to
make them happy? I told them some jokes and riddles, but they seemed to be
unmoved by the humour. I spent some time with them and promised myself one
thing. I will look after my parents when I grow up. I will never leave them like this.
I wondered why people misbehave with their parents like this. Parents should be
respected and loved because parents are the best people in this world.
Shubham/Shubhavi

had done, paid back today. I can never forget how much I had toiled in the field, during
the summer camp to get into the school football team. My coach had appreciated my
efforts. My parents will be so proud of me when I will receive the trophy for the ‘Best
Sportsman’ from the Chief Guest. All the parents and teachers will clap for me. I will be
a hero at that moment.
I have also been selected to represent the team for the School Nationals to be held
next month.
God, please give me strength and endurance to live up to the expectations of my
coach and my parents.

Day 13 –Competency to be taken up

Article writing
1.Parents today are facing a major problem with their children. They waste most of
their time on Facebook and other social networking sites, with the result that their
studies and other important activities are neglected. You are Rajesh /Rajni Write an
article on this issue taking ideas from the hints given below.

✓ Hints
➢ Teenagers waste time.
➢ Parents’ fear of the dangers involved.
➢ Pros include fast spread of information, source of news, solves crimes, helps
students with academic work, improves relationships.
➢ Cons include spread of false information, students waste time, leads to stress,
misunderstandings and arguments. Children develop self cantered personalities.
Leads to loneliness and depression.

Answer:
➢ Pros and Cons of Social Networking Sites

➢ Social networking has taken today’s youth by storm. Teenagers go crazy over it and
spend most of their time in socialising on these sites. At the same time, it has created
worry among the parents of teenagers. Parents now fear the worst, when they hear of
ruined reputations, cyber crimes, online predators and other dangers.

➢ When we talk about the pros and cons then there are always two sides of a coin. Let
us take the positive aspect of networking first. Social networking sites spread
information faster than any other media. These sites are the best source of news.
These sites help solve crimes more quickly. The best advantage of social networking
sites is for the students. They help a student to do better at school. They can easily
discuss educational topics and assignments. Thus, they can score better grades in
academics. It also improves relationships and increases friend circle. People can
connect with their family and friends living abroad through skype and e-mail facilities.
It helps to stay in touch with friends, they cannot meet regularly.

➢ Social network helps to spread false and unreliable information, which may harm
groups, communities, and even nations. Students waste time by playing games and
socialising. Therefore, they tend to score lower grades in academics, which leads to
stress, misunderstandings, and arguments. Children spend less time in face-to-face
interactions and this leads to self-centered personalities and behaviour. A person may
suffer from loneliness, depression, anxiety, and general distress.
To sum up we can say that it’s wise to tread carefully and be aware of the pros and
cons before we indulge

2. You are Hitesh/Himani looking at the increasing obesity among school children write an
article on the topic in taking help from the hints given below.

➢ sedentary lifestyle of children, watch television, waste time on social networking sites,
very little physical exercise.
➢ eat junk food and drink aerated drinks instead of a balanced diet.
➢ should be encouraged to do more physical exercise.

Answer:
➢ Increasing Obesity in Children

➢ In modern times, the problem of being overweight is quite prominent. Children are suffering
from this disorder, which was once considered to be meant for adults only.

➢ These days, children lead a sedentary lifestyle with very little physical exercise.
Technological advancement has reduced physical exercise among children. They spend
most of the time watching television, playing video games or on social networking sites. The
second major cause of obesity is the junk food that the children eat. This includes burgers,
pizzas, noodles, and aerated drinks. This type of food is easily available and has a good
taste, but it does much harm to the health of the child. Children love to eat chips, chocolates,
and ice-creams instead of a balanced diet. Junk food is high in calories and results in
obesity.

➢ It’s about time that parents keep a watch on their child’s health. They should feed them with
milk, juices, and fruits. Moreover, children should be encouraged to do physical exercise.
They should be encouraged to go to parks to play. Sports should be a major part of the
school curriculum in order to maintain the physical fitness of school-going children.

Answer:
Title —> The Missing Furniture
There was once an old lady. She meets with an accident and loses her eyesight. She
becomes very upset and calls in the most qualified surgeon in town to treat her. She
promises to pay a large amount of fees to the surgeon if he is able to restore her
eyesight. The surgeon visits the old lady every day and gives her some medicines. He
takes advantage of the 2 fact that she is blind and can’t see anything. He starts
stealing pieces of expensive furniture from the house.
Content —> He takes away one piece every day. For this purpose he delays the cure.
When he takes away all the furniture from the house he restores the eyesight of the
lady.
When he asks for the fees, the old lady refuses to pay him. She says that her eyesight
is not yet fully restored. The surgeon disagrees. The lady plainly replies that she is not
able to see the furniture in the house, which means that her eyesight has not been
restored. The doctor feels ashamed and quietly leaves the house.
Moral-God watches our every action.

The Editor

Subject : Regarding the indiscriminate use of loudspeakers

Dear Sir,
I would like to draw the kind attention of the concerned authorities towards the
indiscriminate use of loudspeakers through the columns of your esteemed newspaper.
Now-a-days, the use of loudspeakers at religious places, political gatherings, marriages
etc has become a very common sight. The organisers of these events do not bother to
turn off the loudspeakers after the stipulated time. In a lot of cases, the use of
loudspeakers continues till late in the night. This creates a lot of nuisance and
disturbance for a lot of people especially students and senior citizens.
I would want the authorities to look into this matter and put stricter rules in place.
They must ensure that the use of loudspeakers does not continue after the stipulated
time is over. Their efforts in this regard would be much appreciated by one and all.
Yours truly

Answer:
Rajhans Hostel

3rd January, 2017
My Dear friend ,
I hope you are hale and hearty. Nevertheless, I am sure you will not be feeling very
comfortable in Delhi. It must be very cold there. Yet, it may surprise you that I have
visited Simla last week. Instead of feeling uncomfortable, I enjoyed myself a lot.

It was the end of December. The usual crowds of summer days were absent. We got a
comfortable room. In the morning, I opened the window. What a scene ! It was
snowing all around. We were two persons in the room. Both of us dressed ourselves
well and came out in the open. It was my first experience of enjoying the snow-fall.
I kept on the road for a long time.

In the afternoon, I watched an exciting programme of ice-skating. I could not

participate in it. Yet, it was a treat to watch.
With love.
Yours affectionately

5. You are Shubham/Subhavi ,recently you visited the old age home in Delhi. You met old
people who were lonely and sick.

Sportsman’ from the Chief Guest. All the parents and teachers will clap for me. I will be
a hero at that moment.
I have also been selected to represent the team for the School Nationals to be held

✓ Hints
➢ problem of being overweight in common in children.

Sports should be a major part of the
school curriculum in order to maintain the physical fitness of school-going children.

eyesight. The surgeon visits the old lady every day and gives her some medicines. He
takes advantage of the 2 fact that she is blind and can’t see anything. He starts

Yours truly

3. To your friend describing the winter season in a hill station you visited.
You have recently visited a hill station during winter vacation. Write your experience
to your friend. You are Manu/Manavi.
Answer:

➢ x–2=7 ➢ y + 3 = 10 ➢ 6=z+2
x–2=7 y + 3 = 10 6=z+2
x=7+2 y = 10 –3 z+2=6
x=9 y=7 z = 6-2
z=4
➢ 3/7 + x = 17/7 ➢ 6x = 12 ➢ 2x/3 = 18

3/7 + x = 17/7 6x = 12 2x/3 = 18

x = 17/7 – 3/7 x = 12/6 2x = 18 × 3

x = 14/7 x=2 2x = 54

x=2 x = 54/2

x = 27

Q.1) Solve the following linear equations:

IV. 7x – 9 = 16 IV. 4z + 3 = 6 + 2z

V. 14y – 8 = 13 V. 5x + 9 = 5 + 3x

VI. x/3 + 1 = 7/15 VI. 2x – 1 = 14 – x

VII. 5t – 3 = 3t – 5 VIII. 3x = 2x + 18

Q.2) The base of an isosceles triangle is 4/3 cm. The perimeter of the triangle
is cm. What is the length of either of the remaining equal sides

LINES AND ANGLES

Types of Lines and Angles

There are various types of lines and angles in geometry based on the measurements and
different scenarios. Let us learn here all those lines and angles along with their
definitions.

Types of Lines
Lines are basically categorized as:

• Line segment
• Ray

Based on concepts or operations performed on lines, they are;

• Parallel Lines
• Perpendicular Lines
• Transversal
Line Segment
A line segment is a part of a line with two end-points. It is the shortest distance between
two points and has a fixed length.

Ray
A ray is a part of a line, which has a starting point and extends infinitely in one direction.

Perpendicular Lines
When two lines form a right angle with each other, by
meeting at a single point, are called perpendicular
lines. In the figure, you can see, lines AB and CD are
perpendicular to each other.

Parallel Lines
Two lines are said to be parallel when they do not
meet at any point in a plane or which do not
intersects each other. In the figure, lines PQ and RS
are parallel to each other.

Transversal Line
When a line intersects two lines at distinct points, it is
called a transversal. In the figure, a transversal l is
intersecting two lines at point P and Q.
TYPES OF ANGLES

Transversal Angles
When a transversal line passes through the two parallel lines, different angles are formed

• Corresponding angles

∠1 = ∠5, ∠2 = ∠6, ∠3 = ∠7 and ∠4 = ∠8

• Alternate Interior Angles

∠3 = ∠6 and ∠4 = ∠5

• Alternate Exterior Angles

∠1 = ∠8, and ∠2 = ∠7

• Vertically Opposite Angles

∠1 = ∠4, ∠2 = ∠3, ∠5 = ∠8 and ∠6 = ∠7.

Angle Sum Property of a Triangle Theorem
Angle sum property of triangle states that the sum of interior angles of a triangle is 180°.

Q.1) In the figure, lines PQ and RS intersect at point O. If ∠POR : ∠ROQ = 5 : 7, find
all the angles.

Solution:

From the given figure,

∠POR +∠ROQ = 180° (linear pair of angles since PQ is a straight line)

Also, given that,

∠POR : ∠ROQ = 5 : 7

Therefore, ∠POR = (5/12) × 180° = 75°

Similarly, ∠ROQ = (7/12) × 180° = 105°

Now, ∠POS = ∠ROQ = 105° (vertically opposite angles)

∠SOQ = ∠POR = 75° (vertically opposite angles)

Q. 2) In the below figure, if AB || CD, ∠APQ = 50° and ∠PRD = 127°, find x and y.
Q.3) If AB || CD, CD || EF and y : z = 3 : 7, find x from the below figure.

Q.4) In each of the following figures, Find. the value of

DATA HANDLING
Data handling means to collect and present the data so that it could be used in further
studies and to find some results.

Data
Any information collected in the form of numbers, words, measurements, symbols, or in
any other form is called data.

Organizing Data
Any data which is available in the unorganized form is called Raw Data.
This raw data is arranged or grouped in a systematic manner to make it meaningful
which is called the Presentation of Data.

Terms Related to Data Organizing

1. Frequency
Frequency tells us the no. of times a particular quantity repeats itself.
2. Frequency Distribution Table
Frequency can be represented by the frequency distribution table.
The above table shows the no. of times a particular colour repeat in the bag of skittles.
Frequency can also be shown by the tally marks. A cut over four lines represents the
number 5.

Graphical Representation of Data

The grouped data can be represented graphically for its clear picture and it is the easiest
way to understand the data.
Types of Graph

1. Pictograph
When we represent the data
through pictures or symbols
then it is called Pictograph.

Here one tree represents 10

trees. And we can easily read
the pictograph.
The graph shows that there are
30 trees of apple and so on.

2. Bar Graphs
In the bar graph, the information represented by the bars of the same width with equal
gaps but the height of the bars represent the respective values.

Here, the names of pets are

represented on the
horizontal line and the
values of the respective pets
are shown by the height of
the bars. There is an equal
gap between each bar.
