Introduction

What are prepositions?

It can be said prepositions are a word group used to link nouns, pronouns
and phrases to other words in a sentence.

There are many prepositions, a few examples are: “To” “In” “At” “On”
“Of” “In front of” “On top of” “Next to” “By” and etc.

Prepositions are divided in three main groups: Prepositions of place,


Prepositions of movement and direction and prepositions of time.

Prepositions can be a topic quite hard to master. Many struggle to make use
of the correct prepositions in the correct way, and that is where this school
work comes in.

This work will be speaking about the prepositions of time, more


specifically the prepositions in, on, and at as well as how to use them.
1. THE PREPOSITION “IN”

“In” is the most common member of the group of prepositions of time


and date. We tend to hear and use it frequently in our day-to-day life, but
many use it in the wrong way without even knowing it.

1.1 How to use the preposition “In”

The preposition “in” is used when referring to longer periods such as:

- Months;

- Years;

- Centuries;

1.2 Examples:

“ I will visit my grandma in December “


“ In 2020 there was a pandemic “

“ I will be on 10th grade in four months “


2. THE PREPOSITION “ON”

Contrary to the preposition “In”, the preposition “On” has a more specific
use.

2.1 How to use the preposition “On”

We use the preposition “ On” for sentences that indicate very specific
periods of time such as:

- Days of the month;

- Days of the week;

- Weeks.

2.2 Examples:

“ My birthday is on July 14th. “


“Tests start on the third week of this month.”

“ We can rest on Saturday. “


3. THE PREPOSITION “AT”

Different from the prepositions “in” and “on”, the preposition “At” is not
used to tell dates.

3.1 How to use the preposition “At”

The prepositions “At” is used to tell the time instead of days or dates.

3.2 Examples:

“I will sleep at 10:13pm”


“I wake up at 6:00am”

“ Classes start at 7:30am “


CONCLUSION

Finally, reaching the conclusion, we can summarize that off all groups of
prepositions, the prepositions of time are the ones we use to tell time and
dates.

The prepositions of time has as elements the prepositions “on” “in” and
“at” play a regular role in our day-to-day life.

Each preposition of the group has a specific purpose:

The preposition “on” is used for long periods of times such as months,
years, centuries and older times.

The preposition “in” is used for specific dates such as days of the month or
weeks.

The preposition “at” is used to tell the time of the day.
