The Gathering
We gather in silence. The service starts with the sounding of a bell.
Please remain seated as the Choir sing from the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
The Bidding
The Dean In the name of God,
who created the world and all that is within it,
who calls us to be a people alive in faith and hope,
and who sanctifies us through the promise of redemption,
we welcome you.
Grace to you and peace.
As we enter into this solemn season of Advent,
we hear again God’s call to his people,
which has echoed through the world since the beginning of time;
we reflect upon his words in our hearts,
seeking to live more truly to his name;
and we open our hearts to his Holy Spirit,
looking forward with hope to the coming of his kingdom.
So in prayer and penitence, praise and song,
let us give voice to the hope set forth in the Scriptures,
and prepare for the coming kingdom of God;
and let us commend ourselves
and the whole human family to his keeping:
may he guide us into the way of peace,
give light to those in darkness and the shadow of death,
and kindle within us the fire of his love.
We make our prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord,
and pray for the coming of his Kingdom,
in the words that he himself has taught us:
3
All Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
Please remain seated as the Choir sing:
Please sit.

God’s People Are Comforted

Advent Hands
by Catherine Alder
I see the hands of Joseph.
Back and forth along bare wood they move.
There is worry in those working hands,
sorting out confusing thoughts with every stroke.
“How can this be, my beautiful Mary now with child?”
Rough with deep splinters, these hands,
small, painful splinters like tiny crosses
embedded deeply in this choice to stay with her.
He could have closed his hands to her,
said, “No” and let her go to stoning.
But, dear Joseph opened both his heart and hands
to this mother and her child.
Preparing in these days before
with working hands
and wood pressed tight between them.
It is these rough hands that will open
and be the first to hold the Child.
I see the hands of John,
worn from desert raging storms
and plucking locusts from sand ripped rocks
beneath the remnant of a Bethlehem star.
A howling wind like some lost wolf
cries out beneath the moon,
or was that John?
This loneliness,
enough to make a grown man mad.
He’s waiting for this, God’s whisper.
“Go now. He is coming.
You have prepared your hands enough.
Go. He needs your servant hands,
your cupping hands to lift the water,
and place his feet upon the path to service and to death.
Go now, John, and open your hands to him.
It is time.”
I see a fist held tight and fingers blanched to white.
Prying is no easy task.
These fingers find a way of pulling back to old positions,
protecting all that was and is.
Blanched to white. No openness. All fright.
But then the Spirit comes.
A holy Christmas dance begins
and blows between the twisted paths.
This fist opens
slowly,
gently,
beautifully,
the twisted fingers letting go.
7
Their rock-solid place in line has eased.
And one by one the fingers lift
True colour is returned
And through the deepest of mysteries,
The holiest of holies,
O longing of longings
Beyond all human imagining
this fist,
as if awakened from Lazarus’ cold stone dream
reaches out to hold the tiny newborn hand of God.
Please stand to sing as the Choir move to the West End of the Cathedral.

The Peaceful Kingdom
Isaiah 11. 1–10
Lux, Light,
Calida gravisque pura velut aurum Warm and heavy, pure as gold
Et canunt angeli molliter And the angels sing softly

Please stand to sing as the procession moves to the front of the Cathedral.
As the lighting increases, candles are extinguished.

The New Heaven and the New Earth
Revelation 21. 1–7
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had
passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

The Word Became Flesh
John 1. 1–18
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without
him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the
life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did
not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to
testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light,
but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was
coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not
know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But
to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children
of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but
of God.
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory
as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out,
‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he
was before me.”’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law
indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one
has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has
made him known.
Omnia per ipsum facta sunt All things were made by him;
et sine ipso factum est nihil. and without him nothing was made.
Please stand.
The Blessing
Bishop May God the Father,
who loved the world so much that he sent his only Son,
give you grace to prepare for life eternal.
All Amen.
Bishop May God the Son,
who comes to us as redeemer and judge,
reveal to you the path from darkness to light.
All Amen.
Bishop May God the Holy Spirit,
by whose working the Virgin Mary conceived the Christ,
help you bear the fruits of holiness.
All Amen.
Bishop And the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among us and remain with us always.
All Amen.

Sheffield Cathedral Nature Notes
As part of our plans to upgrade our Eco Church Bronze award to Silver we are trying to
make the grounds around your Cathedral more attractive to wildlife, as well as for us
humans. The vegetation we let grow wilder over the summer has now been cut as part of
the mowing regime to create wildflower areas. We’re also seeding these areas with yellow
rattle and other wildflowers. We’re leaving some of the dead plants standing as they provide
seeds for birds, and habitat for overwintering insects. The ferns on the front of the building
will lose their fronds but will start growing again next year. We are very keen for your input
especially if you have some free time to help us. Please email enquiries@sheffield-
cathedral.org.uk or talk to one of the staff. To find out more about the Eco Church scheme
please visit: https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/
We’re delighted to inform you that Anjali Jacob, our MES Intern from
2022/23, has been appointed as the Cathedral's new Children's and Youth
Minister. She will work in the Mission Team and have responsibility for
growing the Cathedral’s mission and ministry with children and young
adults. Anjali's working days will be Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
You may have spotted Anjali around the cathedral already as she makes
something of phased start. She will officially begin on Sunday 1 December.
18
Anjali says "My times as Ministry Experience Intern was such a meaningful part of my
journey, and I’m overjoyed to be back with this wonderful community in a new capacity. I’m
looking forward to working closely with our children and youth, creating spaces where they
can explore their faith, build lasting friendships, and grow in their relationship with God. It’s
a privilege to walk alongside the next generation, helping them discover their place in the
church and the wider world."
