Text 10.31.1
gopya ūcuḥ
the gopīs said;
jayati te ’dhikaṁ janmanā vrajaḥ
is glorious; Your; exceedingly; by the birth; the land of Vraja;
śrayata indirā śaśvad atra hi
is residing; Lakṣmī, the goddess perpetually; here; indeed;
of fortune;
dayita dṛśyatāṁ dikṣu tāvakās
O beloved; may (You) be seen; in all directions; Your (devotees);
tvayi dhṛtāsavas tvāṁ vicinvate
for Your sake; dhṛta — sustained; for You; they are searching.
asavaḥ — their life airs;
The gopīs said: O beloved, Your birth in the land of Vraja has made it exceedingly glorious, and thus
Indirā, the goddess of fortune, always resides here. It is only for Your sake that we, Your devoted
servants, maintain our lives. We have been searching everywhere for You, so please show Yourself to
us.
Text 10.31.2
śarad udāśaye sādhu jāta sat
of the autumn season; in the reservoir of water; excellently; grown; fine
sarasijodara śrī muṣā dṛśā
sarasi-ja — of the lotus flowers; the beauty; which excels; with Your glance;
udara — in the middle;
surata-nātha te ’śulka dāsikā
O Lord of love; Your; acquired without payment; maidservants;
vara-da nighnato neha kiṁ vadhaḥ
O giver of benedictions; for You who are killing; na — not; why; murder.
iha — in this world;
O Lord of love, in beauty Your glance excels the whorl of the finest, most perfectly formed lotus within
the autumn pond. O bestower of benedictions, You are killing the maidservants who have given
themselves to You freely, without any price. Isn’t this murder?
Text 10.31.3
viṣa jalāpyayād vyāla rākṣasād
poisonous; jala — by the water (of the Yamunā, fearsome; from the demon (Agha);
contaminated by Kāliya);
apyayāt — from destruction;
varṣa mārutād vaidyutānalāt
from rain (sent by Indra); and the wind-storm from the thunderbolt (of Indra);
(created by Tṛṇāvarta);
vṛṣa mayātmajād viśvato bhayād
from the bull, Ariṣṭāsura; from the son of Maya from all; fear;
(Vyomāsura);
ṛṣabha te vayaṁ rakṣitā muhuḥ
O greatest of personalities; by You; we; have been protected; repeatedly.
O greatest of personalities, You have repeatedly saved us from all kinds of danger — from poisoned
water, from the terrible man-eater Agha, from the great rains, from the wind demon, from the fiery
thunderbolt of Indra, from the bull demon and from the son of Maya Dānava.
Text 10.31.4
na khalu gopīkā nandano bhavān
not; indeed; of the gopī, Yaśodā; the son; Your good self;
akhila dehinām antarātma dṛk
of all; embodied living entities; of the inner consciousness; the seer;
vikhanasārthito viśva guptaye
vikhanasā — by Lord Brahmā; of the universe; for the protection;
arthitaḥ — prayed for;
sakha udeyivān sātvatāṁ kule
O friend; You arose; of the Sātvatas; in the dynasty.
You are not actually the son of the gopī Yaśodā, O friend, but rather the indwelling witness in the hearts
of all embodied souls. Because Lord Brahmā prayed for You to come and protect the universe, You have
now appeared in the Sātvata dynasty.
Text 10.31.5
viracitābhayaṁ vṛṣṇi dhūrya te
viracita — created; of the Vṛṣṇi dynasty; O best; Your;
abhayam — fearlessness;
caraṇam īyuṣāṁ saṁsṛter bhayāt
feet; of those who approach; of material existence; out of fear;
kara saroruhaṁ kānta kāma daṁ
Your hand; like a lotus flower; O lover; desires; fulfilling;
śirasi dhehi naḥ śrī kara graham
on the heads; please place; of us;
of the goddess of fortune, the hand; taking.
Lakṣmīdevī;
O best of the Vṛṣṇis, Your lotuslike hand, which holds the hand of the goddess of fortune, grants
fearlessness to those who approach Your feet out of fear of material existence. O lover, please place that
wish-fulfilling lotus hand on our heads.
Text 10.31.6
vraja-janārti han vīra yoṣitāṁ
vraja-jana — of the people of Vraja; O destroyer; O hero; of women;
ārti — of the suffering;
nija jana smaya dhvaṁsana smita
Your own; of the people; the pride; destroying; whose smile;
bhaja sakhe bhavat kiṅkarīḥ sma no
please accept; O friend; Your; maidservants; indeed; us;
jalaruhānanaṁ cāru darśaya
jala-ruha — lotus; beautiful; please show.
ānanam — Your face;
O You who destroy the suffering of Vraja’s people, O hero of all women, Your smile shatters the false
pride of Your devotees. Please, dear friend, accept us as Your maidservants and show us Your beautiful
lotus face.

Text 10.31.7
praṇata dehināṁ pāpa karṣaṇaṁ
who are surrendered to You; of the embodied the sins; which remove;
living beings;
tṛṇa carānugaṁ śrī niketanam
grass; cara — who graze (the cows); of the goddess of fortune; the bode;
anugam — following;
phaṇi phaṇārpitaṁ te padāmbujaṁ
of the serpent (Kāliya); phaṇā — on the hoods; arpitam — placed; Your; lotus feet;
kṛṇu kuceṣu naḥ kṛndhi hṛc-chayam
please put; on the breasts; our; cut away; the lust in our hearts.
Your lotus feet destroy the past sins of all embodied souls who surrender to them. Those feet follow
after the cows in the pastures and are the eternal abode of the goddess of fortune. Since You once put
those feet on the hoods of the great serpent Kāliya, please place them upon our breasts and tear away
the lust in our hearts.
Text 10.31.8
madhurayā girā valgu vākyayā
sweet; by Your voice; charming; by Your words;
budha manojñayā puṣkarekṣaṇa
to the intelligent; attractive; puṣkara — lotus; īkṣaṇa — You whose eyes;
vidhi-karīr imā vīra muhyatīr
maidservants; these; O hero; becoming bewildered;
adhara sīdhunāpyāyayasva naḥ
of Your lips; sīdhunā — with the nectar; us.
āpyāyayasva — please restore to life;
O lotus-eyed one, Your sweet voice and charming words, which attract the minds of the intelligent, are
bewildering us more and more. Our dear hero, please revive Your maidservants with the nectar of Your
lips.
Text 10.31.9
tava kathāmṛtaṁ tapta-jīvanaṁ
Your; the nectar of words; life for those aggrieved in the material world;
kavibhir īḍitaṁ kalmaṣāpaham
by great thinkers; described; which drives away sinful reactions;
śravaṇa-maṅgalaṁ śrīmad ātataṁ
giving spiritual benefit when heard; filled with spiritual power; broadcast all over the world;
bhuvi gṛṇanti ye bhūridā janāḥ
in the material world; chant and spread; those who; most beneficent; persons.
The nectar of Your words and the descriptions of Your activities are the life and soul of those suffering
in this material world. These narrations, transmitted by learned sages, eradicate one’s sinful reactions
and bestow good fortune upon whoever hears them. These narrations are broadcast all over the world
and are filled with spiritual power. Certainly those who spread the message of Godhead are most
munificent.
Text 10.31.10
prahasitaṁ priya prema vīkṣaṇaṁ
the smiling; affectionate; with love; glances;
viharaṇaṁ ca te dhyāna maṅgalam
intimate pastimes; and; Your; by meditation; auspicious;
rahasi saṁvido yā hṛdi spṛśaḥ
in solitary places; conversations; which; the heart; touching;
kuhaka no manaḥ kṣobhayanti hi
O cheater; our; minds; agitate; indeed.
Your smiles, Your sweet, loving glances, the intimate pastimes and confidential talks we enjoyed with
You — all these are auspicious to meditate upon, and they touch our hearts. But at the same time, O
deceiver, they very much agitate our minds.

Text 10.31.11
calasi yad vrajāc cārayan paśūn
You go; when; from the cowherd village; herding; the animals;
nalina sundaraṁ nātha te padam
than a lotus flower; more beautiful; O master; Your; feet;
śila tṛṇāṅkuraiḥ sīdatīti naḥ
by sharp edges of grain; tṛṇa — grass; sīdati — are experiencing us;
aṅkuraiḥ — and sprouting plants; pain; iti — thus thinking;
kalilatāṁ manaḥ kānta gacchati
discomfort; our minds; O lover; feel.
Dear master, dear lover, when You leave the cowherd village to herd the cows, our minds are disturbed
with the thought that Your feet, more beautiful than a lotus, will be pricked by the spiked husks of grain
and the rough grass and plants.

Text 10.31.12
dina parikṣaye nīla kuntalair
of the day; at the finish; dark blue; with locks of hair;
vanaruhānanaṁ bibhrad āvṛtam
vana-ruha — lotus; ānanam — face; exhibiting; covered;
ghana rajasvalaṁ darśayan muhur
thick; smeared with dust; showing; repeatedly;
manasi naḥ smaraṁ vīra yacchasi
in the minds; our; Cupid; O hero; You are placing.
At the end of the day You repeatedly show us Your lotus face, covered with dark blue locks of hair and
thickly powdered with dust. Thus, O hero, You arouse lusty desires in our minds.

Text 10.31.13
praṇata kāma daṁ padmajārcitaṁ
of those who bow down; the desires; fulfilling; padma-ja — by Lord Brahmā;
arcitam — worshiped;
dharaṇi maṇḍanaṁ dhyeyam āpadi
of the earth; the ornament; the proper object of meditation; in time of distress;
caraṇa-paṅkajaṁ śantamaṁ ca te
the lotus feet; giving the highest satisfaction; and; Your;
ramaṇa naḥ staneṣv arpayādhi-han
O lover; our; on the breasts;arpaya — please place;
adhi-han — O destroyer of mental distress.
Your lotus feet, which are worshiped by Lord Brahmā, fulfill the desires of all who bow down to them.
They are the ornament of the earth, they give the highest satisfaction, and in times of danger they are
the appropriate object of meditation. O lover, O destroyer of anxiety, please put those lotus feet upon
our breasts.

Text 10.31.14
surata vardhanaṁ śoka nāśanaṁ
conjugal happiness; which increases; grief; which destroys;
svarita veṇunā suṣṭhu cumbitam
vibrated; by Your flute; abundantly; kissed;
itara rāga vismāraṇaṁ nṛṇāṁ
other; attachments; causing to forget; men;
vitara vīra nas te ’dharāmṛtam
please spread; O hero; upon us; Your; adhara — of the lips; amṛtam — the nectar.
O hero, kindly distribute to us the nectar of Your lips, which enhances conjugal pleasure and vanquishes
grief. That nectar is thoroughly relished by Your vibrating flute and makes people forget any other
attachment.

Text 10.31.15
aṭati yad bhavān ahni kānanaṁ
travel; when; You; during the daytime; to the forest;
truṭi yugāyate tvām apaśyatām
about 1/1700 of a sec.; becomes like an entire millennium; You; for those who do not see
kuṭila kuntalaṁ śrī-mukhaṁ ca te
curling; with locks of hair; śrī — beautiful; mukham — face; and; Your;
jaḍa udīkṣatāṁ pakṣma kṛd dṛśām
foolish; for those who are eagerly looking; of lids; the creator; of the eyes.
When You go off to the forest during the day, a tiny fraction of a second becomes like a millennium for
us because we cannot see You. And even when we can eagerly look upon Your beautiful face, so lovely
with its adornment of curly locks, our pleasure is hindered by our eyelids, which were fashioned by the
foolish creator.

Text 10.31.16
pati sutānvaya bhrātṛ bāndhavān
husbands; suta — children; anvaya — ancestors; brothers; and other relatives;
ativilaṅghya te ’nty acyutāgatāḥ
completely neglecting; Your; into the presence; acyuta — O infallible one;
āgatāḥ — having come;
gati vidas tavodgīta mohitāḥ
of our movements; who understand the purpose; tava — Your; udgīta — by bewildered;
the loud song (of the flute);
kitava yoṣitaḥ kas tyajen niśi
O cheater; women; who; tyajet — would abandon; niśi — in the night.
Dear Acyuta, You know very well why we have come here. Who but a cheater like You would abandon
young women who come to see Him in the middle of the night, enchanted by the loud song of His flute?
Just to see You, we have completely rejected our husbands, children, ancestors, brothers and other
relatives.

Text 10.31.17
rahasi saṁvidaṁ hṛc-chayodayaṁ
in private; confidential discussions; hṛt-śaya — of lust in the heart; udayam — the rise;
prahasitānanaṁ prema vīkṣaṇam
prahasita — smiling; ānanam — face; loving; glances;
bṛhad uraḥ śriyo vīkṣya dhāma te
broad; chest; of the goddess of fortune; seeing; the abode; Your;
muhur ati spṛhā muhyate manaḥ
repeatedly; excessive; hankering; bewilders; the mind.
Our minds are repeatedly bewildered as we think of the intimate conversations we had with You in
secret, feel the rise of lust in our hearts and remember Your smiling face, Your loving glances and Your
broad chest, the resting place of the goddess of fortune. Thus we experience the most severe hankering
for You.

Text 10.31.18
vraja-vanaukasāṁ vyaktir aṅga te
vraja-vana — in the forests of Vraja; the appearance; dear one; Your;
okasām — for those who dwell;
vṛjina hantry alaṁ viśva-maṅgalam
of distress; the agent of destruction; extremely so; all-auspicious;
tyaja manāk ca nas tvat spṛhātmanāṁ
please release; a little; and; to us; for You; spṛhā — with hankering;
ātmanām — whose minds are filled
sva jana hṛd rujāṁ yan niṣūdanam
Your own; devotees; in the hearts; of the disease; which is; that which counteracts.
O beloved, Your all-auspicious appearance vanquishes the distress of those living in Vraja’s forests. Our
minds long for Your association. Please give to us just a bit of that medicine, which counteracts the
disease in Your devotees’ hearts.
Text 10.31.19
yat te sujāta caraṇāmburuhaṁ staneṣu
which; Your; very fine; caraṇa-ambu-ruham — lotus feet; on the breasts;
bhītāḥ śanaiḥ priya dadhīmahi karkaśeṣu
being afraid; gently; O dear one; we place; rough;
tenāṭavīm aṭasi tad vyathate na kiṁ svit
tena — with them; You roam; they; are distressed; not; we wonder;
aṭavīm — the forest;
kūrpādibhir bhramati dhīr bhavad-āyuṣāṁ naḥ
by small stones and so on; flutters; the mind; of those of whom Your of us.
Lordship is the very life;
O dearly beloved! Your lotus feet are so soft that we place them gently on our breasts, fearing that Your
feet will be hurt. Our life rests only in You. Our minds, therefore, are filled with anxiety that Your tender
feet might be wounded by pebbles as You roam about on the forest path.
