Believe What the Media Says About
Budget Cuts
Reality: The overall amount of money given out to the
average family grows every year, no matter who is in office:

2) You Should NOT Ask for “Grants”

Reality: Over 80% of the free money the government gives out
are not called “Grants.” It’s in the form of “Direct Payments”,
“Transfer Payments”, “Forgiveness”, and “Loans You Don’t Pay
Back”. The best way to identify these opportunities is to say you
are looking for “Financial Assistance.” This way, you won’t
miss anything.

3) Don’t Look for the Money in Washington

 Reality: Sure, the money starts in Washington, D.C., but then it
goes to your state capital. After that, it goes to your county, and
then down to your city and local non-profit organizations.

4) Don’t
Believe You Have to Be Poor to Get
Government Money
Reality: Only 12% of the money the government gives out
goes to the poor. For some programs, the government
considers you poor if you are making $80,000 a year.
More importantly, 80% of all the money opportunities have
NO income requirements at all.

5) Don’t Believe That Government Money is

All Set Aside for “Minorities”
Reality: Sure, there are some programs that are available for
minorities, but I believe that is less than 5%. There are also funds
set aside for anyone who wants to start a business, buy a home,
train for a new job, or get out of debt.

6) Don’t Hire a Grant Writer

Reality: Over 80% of the free money programs are not called
grants, and these applications are usually only 2-4 pages of filling
in the blanks on a form. Make sure you see the application first,
before you ever consider hiring a grant writer. Getting a grant
writer before you see an application is like buying a prom dress
before you are invited to the prom.

7) Don’tGive Money to Anyone Who Promises

You a Grant
Reality: No one, except the agency handing out the
money, can ever promise you will get grant money. Uncle
Sam never, never, never asks for money to apply, unlike scam
artists.

8) Don’t
Believe That One Phone Call Will Get
You All the Money You Need
Reality: Sure, on occasion, this does happen. But it is better to
realize that your efforts can take a few hours, days, or even
weeks. But where else are you going to get $20,000 to solve a
financial problem that has been nagging you for months or even
years?

9) Don’t
Rely Only on Free Money from the
Government
Reality: There are hundreds of other ways to solve
financial problems with government programs, like 1) free
help getting rid of credit card debt, 2) get your college or
training courses paid for, 3) get free dental and healthcare, and
4) free books, condoms, computers; the list goes on.

10) Don’t Stop When Someone Says “NO”FIX

Reality: There are over 17,000 free money programs available and
no one person can know everything. Here is what to do when you
hear that nasty word:
a. Ask this person if they can suggest another place that may
be able to help.
b. Contact your local reference librarian for free research help.
c. Call your local hotline for free services and
financial assistance- 211 or in some areas, 311.
d. Contact the local office of your Congressperson or Senator.

24) Over 6 Million Do Not Apply for $2,482 IRS Grant
The IRS reports that 1 out of every 5 people who are eligible don’t claim
this money. Rich people will get all these tax credits because they have
accountants to do their taxes. But low- and middle-income taxpayers
don’t hire high-priced accountants and are missing their American
Benefit. The IRS says those taxpayers most likely to miss out include:
Self-Employed, People Living in Rural Areas, Grandparents Raising
Children, Recently Divorced, Recently Unemployed, Taxpayers with No

If you need a handicapped accessible van to get around, the government
certainly wants to help you so that you can get around more to
contribute more to society. The problem comes in identifying programs
where you live. Here are the keywords to ask for: “Financing the
Purchase of a Handicapped Van.” Check the following offices in your
state: 1) Assistive Technology Resource Center, 2) Office of
Developmental Disabilities, and 3) Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

an Automobile
This is a one-time payment for veterans with service-connected
disabilities. In addition to buying a car, you may be eligible to pay for
adapting your current car with features like power steering, power
brakes, power windows, power seats, and special equipment necessary
to assist getting in and out of the vehicle. Look for “Veterans

Most states and local communities have two separate funding sources for
paying for burial expenses. One is from the Crime Victims Assistance Fund
for people who die as a result of a crime. This fund usually has few income
requirements. The other fund is for people who have low income and have

Armed with an MBA in computerized management information

systems paid for thanks to government money because of service as a
naval officer in the Vietnam War, Lesko became a professor in
computer science and started a career as an entrepreneur.

His first two businesses failed and one was a software company. His
first successful company was a consulting business that helped
Fortune 500 companies tap government programs to finance mergers
and acquisitions and enter new markets. In a few short years, this
business grew from just himself with a phone and a desk in a one-
room apartment to 30 researchers in downtown Washington, DC.

He then left the corporate world to educate the average consumer on

how they can also use the same government programs to help their lives.
He has written over 100 books on the subject of free money. Two
became New York Times bestsellers.

He was also a columnist for the New York Times syndicate and Good
