CHARACTERS AND SHIPS.

Charles V born February 24, 1500,

Ghent, Flanders that is now called
belgium—died September 21, 1558, San
Jerónimo de Yuste, Spain was the Holy
Roman emperor, king of Spain , and
archduke of Austria who inherited a
Spanish and Habsburg empire extending
across Europe from Spain and the
Netherlands to Austria and the Kingdom
of Naples and reaching overseas
to Spanish America. He struggled to hold
his empire together against the growing
forces of Protestantism,
increasing Ottoman and French pressure,
and even hostility from the pope. At last
he yielded, abdicating his claims to the
Netherlands and Spain in favor of his
son Philip II and the title of emperor to
his brother Ferdinand I and retiring to a
monastery.

Ferdinand Magellan born 1480,

Sabrosa or Porto, Portugal—died April 27,
1521, Mactan, Philippines was a
Portuguese navigator and explorer who
sailed under the flags of both Portugal
and Spain . From Spain, he sailed
around South America, discovering
the Strait of Magellan, and across the
Pacific. Though he was killed in
the Philippines, one of his ships
continued westward to Spain,
accomplishing the first circumnavigation
of Earth. The voyage was successfully
terminated by the Basque navigator Juan
Sebastián del Cano.

Lapulapu or Lapu-Lapu, whose name

was first recorded as Çilapulapu, was
a datu of Mactan, an island now part of
the Philippines. Lapulapu is known for the
1521 Battle of Mactan, where he and his
men defeated Spanish forces led by
Portuguese explorer Ferdinand
Magellan and his native allies Rajah
Humabon and Datu Zula. Magellan's
death in battle ended his voyage of
circumnavigation and delayed the
Spanish occupation of the islands by over
forty years until the expedition of Miguel
López de Legazpi in 1564. Modern
Philippine society regards him as the first
Filipino hero because of his resistance
to Spanish colonization.

Juan Sebastián del Cano born c. 1476,

Guetaria, Castile now is spain—died
August 4, 1526, at sea was a Basque
navigator who completed the first
circumnavigation of the Earth. In 1519
Cano sailed as master of the Concepción,
one of five vessels in Ferdinand
Magellan’s fleet, which had sailed west
from Europe with the goal of reaching the
Spice Islands Moluccas in the East. After
Magellan’s death in the Philippines in
April 1521, a series of men took
command of the expedition, but none of
them stayed in charge for longer than a
few months. As one of the few remaining
men, Cano took charge of one of the two
surviving ships, the Victoria, later that
year. He safely brought the expedition
home to Spain in September 1522,
despite scurvy, starvation, and
harassment by the Portuguese. Only 18
Europeans had survived the voyage,
which constituted the first journey
around the globe.
