Power Automate — Content Throughput

Content throughput refers to the amount of data that can be processed or

transferred within a specific period. In the context of Power Automate, it means the
total volume of data that a flow can handle in a day, which is capped at 50GB per day
(depending on the performance profile).

This limit ensures the service remains stable and performs efficiently for all users.

How is the content throughput calculated?

The amount of data read from or written to an integrated system is calculated as
part of the content throughput. This calculation includes data sent to the system via
API and the data returned by the API.
Are there any cost implications with this?
If the flow throughput exceeds the threshold, the newly triggered running will wait
in the queue until the older running ends. This will impact the flow’s performance.
There are no cost implications, but the flows will throttle or slow down beyond the
allowed limits.

Can we check the content throughput for all flows?

You will receive a warning like below only if your flow is near or reaches the
threshold.

Otherwise, you don’t need to be concerned about the content throughput.

Root Cause for reaching the threshold

The most common issue would be design issues that result in excessive actions.

How can I optimize my flows to stay within the limits?

Managing content throughput effectively involves optimizing your flows to process
data in smaller chunks, using efficient triggers and actions, and regularly
monitoring performance to avoid hitting these limits. A few strategies like those
below might help:

1. Optimize Triggers and Actions: Use efficient triggers and actions. For example,
instead of using a trigger that runs every minute, use one that runs less
frequently or only when necessary. If you have ‘do until’ or ‘apply to each’ loops
in your flow, see if you can reduce the number of loop iterations, possibly by
retrieving fewer items to iterate through.

2. Limit Data Retrieval: Retrieve only the necessary data. Use filters and queries to
limit the amount of data your flow processes. Many connectors have ‘filter
query’ and ‘top count’ parameters that can be used to reduce the number of
items retrieved.

3. Monitor and Adjust: Regularly monitor your flow’s performance and adjust as
needed. Use the analytics and monitoring tools provided by Power Automate to
identify bottlenecks and optimize accordingly. You can also use the process
mining tool to analyze your flow and improve efficiency.

4. Upgrade License: Assign the “Power Automate process” plan to the flow.

Do we have options to set the threshold for flows?
