III. Description:
This course has the objective to provide students with the theory and practice of the methodology
used in the teaching of Listening and Speaking skills in both ESL and EFL situations. The topics
included in the course will provide students the opportunity to analyze, interpret, synthesize and
practice the methodology proposed in the literature for the development of these skills. Lectures,
individual presentations, group work, demonstrative classes and micro-teachings are some of the
activities to be expected in the course.

LISTENING
Introduction: The Role of Listening in the ELT Curriculum: What do we know about the
listening process?, What uncertainties exist for foreign language listeners? What are the
implications for the English Language Classroom?

Introduction: Skills and Strategies in Speaking English, What is involved in speaking English
competently?, What are the issues in teaching the phonological aspects of English?, What are the
implications for classroom practice in the teaching of spoken English?

* The portfolio must include 2 LESSON PLANS (1 of each skill) all materials, handouts, teaching aids and
exercises presented, discussed and used in the class.

** You can make a reposition of one of the two written examinations, either a missing exam (must have and
provide a valid excuse) or the lowest grade of the two evaluations when failing the class.

** Failure to present assignments on the due date will be penalized by half.

VI. General Instructions for the class

Each week you will engage in several different learning activities related to the teaching of English. These
activities include: reading the textbook, discussion assignments, viewing online resources including audio and
video files.

Along the term, you will be required to:

 Microteaching and/or Teaching demos


 Read chapters ahead of time in order to participate and/or ask questions to presenters
 Complete writing assignments and upload your work on the platform
 Always give proper credit when referencing or quoting another source. Plagiarism will be penalized.
 Always be respectful of others’ opinions even when they differ from your own.
 When you disagree with someone, you should express your differing opinion in a respectful, non-critical
way.
