4 Calculation of Fertility
4 Calculation of Fertility
The concept of fertility measures refers to various statistical indicators used to assess the reproductive
behavior of a population. These measures provide insights into birth patterns, family planning, and
demographic changes. Understanding fertility is crucial for analyzing population growth and formulating
policies related to health, education, and economic development. Some of the Strategies that will be taken to
calculate birth rates are given below:
Crude Birth Rate (CBR): The number of live births per 1,000 people in a population within a given year. The
rate is crude in that it is related to the total population without regard to age, sex and marital status.
𝐵
× (𝐾)1000
𝑃
Where B= the total number of live births in a year
P = total population
K= is constant, usually 1000.
Interpretation:
Region A has 2,500 live births in a population of 100,000 people. The CBR is 25 births per 1,000 people.
Region B has 1,800 live births in a population of 90,000 people. The CBR is 20 births per 1,000 people.
Region C has 3,200 live births in a population of 120,000 people. The CBR is 26.7births per 1,000 people.
General Fertility Rate (GFR): The number of live births per 1,000 women of childbearing age (usually between 15-49
years) in a given year.
Formula:
𝐵
OR × 1000
𝐹 (15 − 49 )
Where B = total births
F (15 – 49) = number of women age 15 – 49 years
Age In Years Male Female No. of Live Age In Years Female No. of Live
Population Population Births To Population Births To
Women Women
0-14 46000 43000 ------------------
This kind of data is crucial for understanding fertility trends, peak childbearing ages, and shifts in reproductive behavior
over time.
Hypothetical Table for Age-Specific Fertility Rate (ASFR)
Assume the following data for women in a population
Interpretation:
SFR for Age Group 15-19: There are 500 live births to women aged 15-19, and the total number of women in
this age group is 10,000. The SFR is 5050 births per 1,000 women.
SFR for Age Group 20-24: There are 1,200 live births to women aged 20-24, and the total number of women
in this age group is 8,000. The SFR is 150 births per 1,000 women.
