Saida Public High School Life Science
Duration: 90 min
Class: Grade 10 Mid year Exam
This exam is composed of 3 pages and contains 4 exercises to solve.
Mark/20
Exercise 1: (4pts) \ Transpiration intensity during the day
_______________________________
Transpiration varies with many factors such as humidity of the atmosphere, temperature of the atmosphere, the
amount of water in the soil, ….
In order to determine the variation of transpiration during the day, we measure the quantity of water released from
leaves of a determined plant during different hours of the day. The graph below represents the obtained results:

1- Pick out:
1-1. the objective of the experiment.
1-2. the definition of the term « transpiration »..
1-3. two factors wich affect the transpiration.
2- Analyze the results of the graph. What can you conclude?
Exercise 2: (7pts) \Factors influencing gas exchange in
plants_________________________________
In the framework of studying the effect of chlorophyll on the gas exchange, chlorophyllic and non-chlorophyllic
plants were placed in two tightly closed flasks A and B containing water and mineral salts under a jar enriched with
carbon dioxide and exposed to light. We Time (days) 0 3 6 9 12
measured the volume of carbon dioxide
Quantity of CO₂ in flask A (a.u.) 40 30 20 15 5
present at the beginning of the experiment
Quantity of CO₂ in flask B (a.u.) 40 45 50 55 60
and volume of carbon dioxide remaining in each flask at different time intervals. The results are presented in the
adjacent table:
1- Analyze the obtained results in the table.
2- Determine, referring to your acquired knowledge and the results of the table, which flask contains the
chlorophyllic plant and which flask contains the non-chlorophyllic one.
3- Draw a labeled cell taken from plant A after iodine treatment.
4- Represent the results of the table in a graph.
Exercise 3: (4.5pts)\ Mode of nutrition of Water Lentils
___________________________
Water lentils are small aquatic plants which float on water having the leaves at the surface and the roots dipped in
water. In normal conditions, the leaves of this plant multiply and give new ones. In order to study the mode of
nutrition of this plant, we place two water lentils in 2 media both containing water and mineral salts, in the
presence or absence of light. The results of the experiment are presented in the table below:
Conditions Light darkness
Number of leaves of lentils plant at the beginning of the experiment 140 140
Number of leaves of lentils plant at the end of the experiment 350 88
1- Pose the problem under study.
2- Interpret the obtaind results of the table. What can you conclude concerning the mode of nutrition of water
Lentils?
3- 3-1. Name the process occurred in water lentils, in the presence of light, permitting it to survive.
3-2. Indicate the cellular organelle in which this process took place.
4- State 2 conditions, other than light, necessary for the multiplication of water lentils.
Exercise 4: (4.5pts) \ Zone of root
absorption_____________________________________________
In order to identify the zone responsible for the root absorption, 2 students of grade 10, Samar and Hani, take 3
green plants a, b and c whose the roots are dipped in water with a layer of oil above. The experimental setups
and the results obtained after a certain time are shown in document 1:

after a certain time Document 1
1- Describe in few lines the experiment shown in document 1.
2- Indicate the importance of using oil in this experiment.
After these results, the 2 students formulated the following hypotheses:
Samar's hypothesis: The root cap is responsible for absorption of water and mineral salts.
Hani's hypothesis: The root hairs are responsible for absorption of water and mineral salts.
Document 2 shows the obtained results in the same plant whose the root hairs are dipped in water and in another
plant whose the root cap is dipped in water as a function of the hour of the day:

3- Deduce, by referring to the results of document 2, Which hypothesis is confirmed.
