This chart is to help you and let you know more about the type of yarns you can find at your
local store and what the little symbol of the yarn with the number means.

Important notes before we start, please read…

This pattern is very simple, but I recommend that you read the basic instructions before you start.
The pictures will guide and you will be able to check your work as you go.

Slip stitch and fasten off: When working with my patterns you will notice that I will say “sl st
to finish and fasten off” It’s very important to secure and hide away these tails so that your piece
really has that finished look and there's no risk of unraveling or fraying. So every time these
instructions ask you to “fasten off” you will do the following:
1.- Cut the yarn about 5-6 inches from the hook.
2.- Using your hook, draw the cut end of the yarn through the last remaining loop on your hook.
3.- Pull gently on the tail of yarn to snug up the end.
4.- Thread the remaining yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.
5.- Weave the 5-6 inch tail of yarn up and down through 3 or 4 stitches, like in a zigzag pattern.
6.- Go back the way you came, weaving the end backwards through those same few stitches.
7.- Cut the yarn about 1/4 inch from your project and gently pull... the end will disappear, and
your work is secure.

Sc decrease at beginning of row: when working the earflaps we will be making a small crochet
decrease. This is how:

1.- Insert hook into first stitch & draw up a loop (2 loops on hook).

2.- Insert hook into next stitch & draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).
3.- YO & draw through all 3 loops on hook.

After working the sc decrease you will continue working in every st as normal.

5
Switch Hooks When Necessary
Sometimes crocheters tend to work either too tightly or too loosely.

 If your work is too tight, choose a larger crochet hook.

 If your work is too loose, choose a smaller crochet hook.
 Do your experimenting with hooks prior to starting a project. The ideal time to do this is
when you are making your gauge swatches.

Crochet a gauge swatch: to keep stitches consistent and the size of your design on track.
We as crocheters tend to crochet tighter at the beginning and end of rows than in the body of
their work. The gauge for this pattern calls for 8 hdc stitches = 2 inches and 4 hdc rows = 2
inches, make your swatch at least 4 inches square. That way, you can measure in the center of
the swatch and get an accurate measurement of your normal pace.

Rounds: This hats are made crocheting in rounds, each round will begin with a number of chains
which will count some times as the first stitch, and is ended by joining the last stitch with the top
of the beginning st creating concentric circles – slip stitch.

The photo tutorial shows how to make the 12-24 months size. If you are making a size other
than 12-24 months you can still follow the same instructions… the variations are explained at the
end of this pattern base on every size.

14
This is how the ears of this cute Raccoon hat
should look like before attaching them to the
hat.

in second picture below.

16
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 5 sts. When you do this, make sure that you also sc trough

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 5 sts, sl st in each of the last 3 sts. Fasten off. (8 sts)

18
This is how these black pieces should look like. They are the pieces that will go over the white
part of the face to create that bandit look that these little critters have.

FLOWER
Start by making a loop in your hook. Ch 2.
Round 1: Work 5 sc in second chain from hook. Sl st in first sc to join. (5 sc)

19
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st as ch. Ch 2, sl st in st where you are working the dc.
Sl st in to next sc. Repeat from beginning of Round 1until you complete all petals.

20
ASSEMBLING
1. Sew in the ears. Fasten off, weave in and secure ends.
2. Attach the face piece (white first) to the front of the hat. You can add some pins to
prevent the piece from moving out of place when sewing. Fasten off, weave and secure
ends.

3. Place the face piece (black) in top of the white part of the face. Again you can add some
pins to prevent the piece from moving out of place when sewing. The wider side of the
black piece should end up closes to the edge of the hat.

21
4. Sew in the buttons for the eyes.
5. Sew in the nose.
6. Braids: Cut 24 pieces - 38” lengths of yarn and divide into 2 groups of 12 (4 of each
color). Fold one bunch of 12 in half and push the folded end through the bottom space of
the earflap.
Pull the two ends, each of 12 strands, through the folded loop and pull up neatly, keeping
the two ends the same length.

Braid these 24 strands gently and tie an overhand knot near the end to stop the braid from
unraveling. Repeat for second earflap.

7. If this hat is for a girl, sew in the flower or hot glue a hair clip in the back.

Blocking your crochet projects:

Blocking your crocheted item gives it a finished, professional look.

The process of blocking involves shaping and sometimes pinning the crocheted piece into the
correct shape before completing an item.

For blocking items made with acrylic and other synthetic yarns, use a spray bottle with clean
water and mist over the item until it is moist, but not saturated. Pat the item so it is thoroughly
damp. Allow the item to dry completely.

For blocking yarns with wool in it, cotton or linen yarns, shape the item. Then take a damp, clean
cloth and lay it over the crocheted item. Take a steam iron set to the correct temperature for the
yarn, hold the iron about an inch over the item and move the iron above the item until the cloth is
warm.

Do NOT IRON the crocheted item. Remove the cloth AND if the yarn is damp and warm, it is
ready. Remove the cloth and allow the item to dry completely.

Care Instructions:

Hand wash in cool water. Use a mild detergent and allow the hat to soak for twenty minutes,
agitate gently - never squeeze or wring. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry flat. If the hat is
misshapen, reshape as it lies flat and allow to dry.
