Read the problem story:
One day, Daisy find out that she is running out of her school supplies. She
has no papers already and other things she will need to answer her modules. She
asked Father an amount. Father gave her PhP50.00. She asked her mother to buy
the things she needs because she is prohibited of going outside because of the
pandemic situation. The following are the prices of the items:
Pencil PhP 7.00
Pad Paper PhP 18.00
Eraser Php 10.00
Sharpener PhP 20.00
Will her money be enough to buy all these items?
What should Daisy do to know how much will she pay?
What is It
To solve the problem story, let us add first the amount of the items she will buy.
Pencil PhP7.00
Pap Paper PhP18.00
+ Eraser PhP10.00
Sharpener PhP20.00
PhP55.00
The total amount of the items is PhP55.00. Daisy’s money is not enough to buy
them all. This means she needs PhP5.00 more to buy them all.
Since the expenses is more than the money she have, the situation gives the
idea of negative numbers.

Negative numbers have values less than 0. Positive numbers are the
counting or natural numbers.
We can visualize numbers through number lines. The center is zero and the
numbers to the right are positive numbers. the numbers to the left are negative
numbers.
Zero and positive numbers make up the set of whole numbers. Positive numbers
together with zero and negative numbers are called integers. In the set of integers,
Daisy’s money on hand is represented by a positive number while the needed money
is represented by a negative number.
Real-life situations can be represented by integers.
For example, if a temperature reading is 35 degrees above zero, we
say it +35, and -35 if it is 35 degrees below zero.
Another example is when you gained weight of 3 kg, which will be
represented by +3. If you lose weight of 5 kg, it can be represented
by -5.

Let us try another example.
Linda’s mother went to Canada to visit her brother who is working as doctor
in that country. She informed Linda through e-mail that the temperature went down
to - 60C in that country. So, Linda asked her what she meant by - 60C?
If you are Linda’s mother, how will you explain this?
-60C is an example of the temperature of the place that uses integer. An
integer is any number in the set of positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers
and zero. An integer is also defined as a number that does not have a fractional or
decimal component. The positive whole number is called as positive integer and it
is denoted by the symbol (+). The negative whole number is called as the negative
integer and it is denoted by the symbol (-). The - 6 is an example of negative integer.
Integers are arranged consecutively on a number line. Negative integers
are found at the left of zero and positive integers are at the right of zero. Zero is
neither positive nor negative.
Study the number line below.

What integer is 9 units to the right of -3? +6

Any integer has its opposite. The opposite of +7 is -7. The opposite of +8 is -8.
Two integers are opposites if they are of the same distance from 0.

• The number line goes indefinitely in both directions. These are
indicated by the arrows.
• Integers greater than zero are called positive integers. These integers
are found on the right side of zero on the number line.
• Integers less than zero are called negative integers. These integers
are found on the left side of zero on the number line.
• The integers zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative.
• The sign of an integer is either positive ( + ) or negative ( - ), except
zero which has no sign.
• Two integers are opposites if they are each of the same distance from
zero. They are on opposite sides of the number line. One has a
positive sign, the other has a negative sign.

In this lesson, you will learn how to compare integers with other numbers such
as whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
The number line can help compare integers similar to whole numbers, fractions
and decimals.

Integers can be positioned and ordered on a number line.
As we move to the right on the number line, the numbers get larger in value. As
we move to the left, the values get smaller. From the number line above, we can see
the positive integers are greater than zero. Similarly, negative integers are less than
zero.
By observing the number line, we can say the following:
a. -8 is to the left of +2. Therefore -8 is less than +2 or ( -8 < +2)
b. +10 is to the right of +9. Therefore +10 is greater than +9 or (+10 > +9)
c. -8 is to the left of -3. Therefore -8 is less than -3 or ( -8 < -3)

Things to remember:
• Positive integers are greater than zero.
• Negative integers are less than zero but smaller than all positive integers.
• When comparing two positive integers, the bigger number has the greater
value. Since, positive integers are also a counting numbers.
• When two negative integers are compared, the number with smaller number
has the greater value.
