Introduction
Fruits play an integral part in the breakfast of an average
Indian household or of the world in general. They are
fortified with extensive nutrients like potassium,
magnesium, Vitamins, iron and the list is endless.
However, keeping in mind the chemistry of it, only a few
of the nutrients are in quantities that can be identified
easily (since they are micronutrients). Hence through the
process of quantitative analysis it is possible to find a few
of the metals present.
In this experiment, we chose to try various quantitative
tests on the sample of a banana. The reason being
bananas are fruit that is consumed in every household
which helps in roughly judging the mineral intake of
people. This acts as a helpful key as to how healthy
breakfasts are in an average household.
Banana is a fruit which is a storehouse of all the
necessary minerals required in optimal quantities along
with carbohydrates and fiber. It contains Potassium,
Magnesium, Copper, Calcium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C
etc.
However since they are micronutrients i.e. present in
minute quantities, only a few can be identified using
quantitative analysis.
Banana is grown in more than 150 countries and it is
widely believed there are more than 1,000 types of
bananas in the world, which are subdivided into 50
groups.
The 6 well known types of Banana are:

Experiment
AIM:
To prove that a banana which ís a staple breakfast in urban
india
has all the nutrients in it and is a good choice as a component
of a
balanced diet.
Also, the míneral ions found in bananas are found using
QUALITATIVE
ANALYSIS.
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
1 ripe banana
Mortar and pestle
Tollen's reagent
Funnel
2 filter papers
Translucent paper
Alcoholica Naphthol
Concentrated H2S04
Fehling's A and Fehling's B solution
CuS04 solution
Concentrated NaOH solution
Concentrated HN03
lodine solution
5 test tubes
1 boiling tube
Beaker
Theory :
The hypothesis that a banana is a major component of a balanced diet
has been agreed upon sínce ages. The athletes and people going to exercise are
advised to eat 2 bananas as a pre-workout meal .It is also a
staple breakfast in many parts of urban India.
A large Banana (average weight 136 grams) is known to contain 150
calories, so 2 bananas contains 300 calories which is sufficient as a quick
option for breakfast .Bananas are rich in VITAMIN C,FIBRE, VITAMIN B,
and are free of LDL cholesterol and are free of sodium ions .Two
bananas provide enough calories for an 1-1/2 hour workout or walk.
Bananas have a small amount of tryptophan, an amino acid that when
combined with bananas' natural vitamin B6, helps boost the
production of serotonin, a "feel-good hormone". A 2015 study by the
NUS in Singapore showed that Bananas contain adequate amounts of
carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats and roughage (dietary fibre). This
implies that Banana as a breakfast is an essential component
of a balanced diet.
Bananas are known to contain appreciable amounts of
potassium,magnesium, calcium and nitrate ions.
Potassium:
Potassium ion is known to control the blood pressure, therefore it serves as a good
choice for the patients suffering from hypertension.
Calcium:
Calcium ions help in blood clotting and are an important constituent of
bones.
Magnesium: Magnesium is a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Magnesium
is important for many processes in the body, including regulating muscle
and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making
protein, b
one, and DNA.
Nitrate:
Nitrate ions in small amounts help in the proper functtonng of
the thyroid
gland and regulates the immunlty of the human body
