Week 1 Situating individuals in
Social Context
• The concepts of health behaviors – the actions that
individuals take to influence health; defining health
problems in behavioral terms
• Situating individuals in social context, beyond the sole
responsibility of an individual
• Embodiment; ”get under the skin” - incorporate
biologically the world in which we live including
societal and ecological circumstances
• Social gradient – low SES, poor health
*The social gradient in health means that health

institutions; the function of each institution; barriers
and facilitators of a health intervention based on
institutional structures and institutionalization
processes.
