ACING THE

MATH SECTION
DU IBA | BUP FBS

A short session hosted by

Mohammad Raiyan Zaman

IBA BBA 29th
Former Math Instructor, Mentors’
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE MATH
SECTION?
FINISH THE MENTORS’ MATH QBANK ATLEAST ONCE. Exception: If you are strong in the
arithmetic section, you can skip/solve 50% questions from the geometry section.

If you have issues in basics, look through the concepts via Youtube and start Saifur’s Qbank
before starting the Math Qbank.

Important to be able to crunch numbers quickly. Knowing shortcuts can help you solve some
problems within 45 seconds, which would take you over a minute without shortcuts

Stay consistent! Solve atleast 50-60 sums per day on average and break it down to 2 sessions.
Increase the number if you haven’t started the Qbank yet.

If you’ve finished the Qbank once, go back and solve the comparatively difficult problems
again.

Once you’re done with the above, you can sit back and put more focus on the other subjects for
some time and then solve harder questions from GMAT club. You can also sit for mocks that
coaching centres offer.
HOW TO SCORE ATLEAST 40% IN THE
MATH SECTION?
We know that the passing bar is 33% which may even decrease if the questions are difficult and/or
the overall scores of the candidates are lower than expected. Yet, setting a target of 40-45% in
each section will enhance your chances of getting in. A 33% passing bar also indicates that there
might be lengthy math questions and it is okay for you to take more than 1 minute in those.

A sample scenario

AT THE EXAM HALL:
Understand that it’s a pressure test and it’s important to remain cool and maintain your
composure under pressure.

It’s okay if you do not know how to answer a certain question. Make sure that you can secure
atleast 33% marks in each section.

If you are absolutely bamboozled 30-40 seconds into the question, skip to the next one. You
can come back later.

Allott between 25-40 minutes in the math section, depending on your strength in each subject,
and the difficulty of the question.

Some people prefer to start the exam with their strongest suit for more confidence and keeping
more time for the difficult parts. Others like me prefer to start our weakest subject first so that
we can solve them better with a fresh mind while having the luxury of solving the easier ones
with a relatively tired mind.

If the questions are way more difficult/lengthy than that of Qbanks or the mocks you sat for,
understand that it is difficult for the other 5000+ candidates as well. Do not panic if you’re
answering less as the bar will naturally come down under those circumstances.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL MATH GAME?
1. Understand and remember the fractions table.
Know values of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10, 1/20, 1/50, 1/100, 1/1000 and so on

2. Learn to convert fractions into percentages and vice versa.

Ex: 20%=1/5 or twice of 10%
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL MATH GAME?
3. Understand how to come up with 10%,20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% of a
number quickly

4. Understand that 9 times a number is equal to 10 times the number minus the number itself.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL MATH GAME?
5. Understand that Average= Median if the numbers have the same difference

6. Understand that the average of speed of a boat going upstream and that of a boat going
downstream is the speed in still water.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL MATH GAME?
7. You’ve memorized times table from 1-12 in school. Best if you go up to 18.
Quickly crunching values like 7 x 15= 105 really saves valuable seconds

8. Learn to multiply or divide using terminals.

Ex: 308/14
= 280/14 +28/14
= 20+2=22
