1 Scope
This standard defines the Brose requirements for rolled flat products. They are mainly taken from the
corresponding ASTM and SAE standards and will be updated when needed using the latest editions of the
ASTM and SAE standards.
Since these standards do not contain all material characteristics that are relevant for processing and
manufacturing (e.g. microstructure, weldability, restricted tolerances etc.), this standard contains in parts
additional requirements or restrictions. Other specifications can be individually agreed on (e.g. FS, drawing)
if this does not affect manufacture and function of the component.
To minimize the risk of Brose products being manufactured from strip steel with mechanical properties
(test characteristics) outside the specified tolerances, the stamping facility must conduct appropriate tests
(tensile-/hardness test) in certain circumstances (change of supplier, D part).
If the Brinell hardness test is used, the specifications in accordance with BN 590603 apply. If a material
quality is to be tested whose hardness threshold values are not specified in BN 590603, the Central
Materials Laboratory at Brose must be consulted to agree on which procedures to use in the future (see
also BN 590603).
For release, the Brose-internal release process must be conducted according Work Instruction U1-
020_GR_55_00 (Production material sampling). The release is granted for the material. The functional
release must be conducted on the component itself.
The current list of released materials can be viewed by Brose employees in the SAP application EH&S.
In North America the same steel designation, e.g. “CS Type A” exists in three different Standards (ASTM
A653, ASTM A1008, ASTM A1011). Therefore, it is necessary to make a difference between hot-rolled
(HR), cold-rolled (CR) and hot-dipped galvanized material (Gxxx).
Furthermore, standards exist where only “typical” mechanical properties are specified. Therefore, it is
necessary to state these mechanical values as “mandatory” (man).
Regarding the case hardening and quenching and tempering steels in the North American Standards (ASTM
and SAE) only the chemical composition is specified. Aiming good fine-edge blanking results, here it is
necessary to specify modified mechanical properties and potentially the microstructure (spheroidising)
additionally, compared to ASTM respectively SAE Standard (mod).

Microstructure
Banding structure and islands of pearlite and carbide accumulations as well as other material
inhomogeneities must be avoided as much as possible, so that formability is demonstrably not impaired. If
their presence verifiably lead to production problems, a complaint will be lodged.
The maximum permissible threshold value is Type 6.3 and 7.3 according to SEP 1520 (Steel Iron Test
Sheets).
Welding
It must be possible to perform resistance projection welding. When ordering, a max. carbon equivalent is
to be specified, with the exception of materials with a carbon content > 0.25%

“G”: Zinc-Coated (galvanized) by the hot-dip Process
The coating weight (mass) tests shall be performed in accordance with the requirements
of ASTM A924.
Norm / Standard
North American strip and sheet materials 590595-104
Other coating masses as defined in Table 4 and /or different coating masses for each side can be agreed
on when ordering and have to be recorded on the component drawing.
The quantity relevant to Brose is the coating thickness. No part of the material may fall short of the
minimum coating thickness, and the mean value must be within the specification. This requirement applies
to the entire width of the strip and on both sides.
“M”: Minimized spangle: (normally produced in coating designation G90 and lighter)
Finish produced on hot-dip zinc coated steel sheet in which the grain pattern is visible to the unaided eye,
and is typically smaller and less distinct than the pattern on regular spangle.
All hot-dip coated products must be protected effectively against white rust formation so that no white
rust develops during a storage period of up to 6 months.
When ordering one of the following surface treatment conditions, it has to be agreed on taking section 3.9
of this standard into account for subsequent processes:
(C) unoiled (dry), chemically passivated with approved passivation as per BN 590295 Part 1
Chemical passivation protects the surfaces against the effects of moisture and reduces the risk of
corrosion on products during transport and storage. Local discolorations caused by this treatment are
permissible and do not impair quality.
oiled (O)
(O) oiled with oils approved for Brose painting processes as per BN 590378
This treatment too reduces the risk of premature corrosion of the surface. It must be possible to remove
the oil coating with appropriate non-aggressive degreasing agents.
Hot-dip coated products may only be delivered without surface treatment (non-treated (U)) if the purchaser
demands this explicitly.
Norm / Standard
North American strip and sheet materials 590595-104
The requirements for corrosion resistance (salt spray test) of hot-dip coated products before parts
production are specified in BN 590295 Part 1.
Depending on the degree of forming taking place, the corrosion protection of the component may be
reduced by a reduction of the zinc coating, e.g. in sections with bending or embossing.
When coated strip/sheet steel is delivered directly to Brose (for forming and painting in house by Brose) or
when coated steel is used for stamped parts to be painted by Brose, the following applies as a standard
rule:
Hot-dip galvanized strip steels must be delivered with inorganic passivation on a CrIII- base, fluoride-
modified, not oiled (dry) ("C"). The approved passivation is listed in BN 590295 Part 1. Other
passivation (Cr-free or organic) may only be used after thorough analysis and sampling (release) and
only after consultation with the materials laboratory of the Brose Group.
If the strip steel supplier cannot provide passivated material, oil coatings can be used in exceptional
cases ("O"). When the material is directly delivered to Brose, this must be shown in the surface
designation cited in the purchase order text. Acid-free, transparent anti-rust oils must be used for
oiling, as listed and approved in BN 590378. In this case, special measures are necessary in the
coating process (cf. BN 587000). For this reason, variant C is to be preferred.
For certain parts, such as assembly unit supports for door modules, an oiled material must likewise be
used instead of a chemically passivated material because a sealing bead is subsequently applied. This
is shown on the drawing.
For strip/sheet or stamped parts that are not painted by Brose (but by an external manufacturer, for
example), other surface treatments can be selected in individual cases. In such cases, the supplier must
ensure the quality of the coated parts as per BN 587000 and BN 562161.

HSLAS and HSLAS-F steels contain the strengthening elements niobium, vanadium, titanium and
molybdenum added singly or in combination. The minimum requirements only apply to the microalloy
elements selected for strengthening of the steel.
Summarized that means that at very least, one of the microalloy elements (Ti, V, Nb) must be added to at
least 0.005%. It is also permissible for combinations of the microalloy elements (2 or 3) to be added, each
with content greater than 0.005% (not a summation of the elements though to reach this level).

2)
Microstructure requirements: Fine-edge blanking grades, therefore only slightly banding (6.0 -6.1/7.0 -
7.1) according to SEP 1520, spheroidization min. 98%.
The mechanical properties specified in Table 16 as well as the microstructure requirements mentioned
above 1) and 2) have been from taken from technical literature regarding “Forming and Fine-Cutting”. Those
special requirements adjusted to fine-cutting are meant to contribute to achieving better results from the
fine-cutting, in particular e.g. in the case of mass-production.
Other specifications are possible in certain cases if this does not affect the function and quality of the
component negatively. In this case the divergences must be recorded in the components drawing.
Optionally:
Use of spheroidised-annealed hot-rolled strip – if the appropriate product is available – instead of a
spheroidised-annealed cold-rolled narrow strip.
Occurrence and type of material inhomogeneities (e.g. slag inclusions, segregations) should represent the
state-of-the-art technology and should be limited in order not to affect the cold forming properties.
CS Type A and B:
No rough-striped pearlite or large quantities of grain-boundary cementite permitted
DS Type A and B:
The spheroidization must be at least 70%
The max. permissible threshold value for banding structure is Type 6.3 or 7.3 as per SEP 1520.

North American strip and sheet materials 590595-104
Minor surface defects are permissible as long as processability and the adhesion of subsequent coating is
not negatively affected. The surface type must permit a uniform quality paint coating in accordance with
this standard-KTL-process. It must not have any defects such as scales, score marks or pores that could
cause later paint defects.
Surface finish:
Unless otherwise specified, the sheet shall have a matte finish.
When required, the appropriate surface texture and condition, e.g. a special surface roughness (centre line
average height) must specified when ordering and recorded on the component drawing.

HSLAS, HSLAS-F and UHSS steels contain the strengthening elements niobium, vanadium, titanium and
molybdenum added singly or in combination.

Comments:
Type X - Typically referred to as HSLA steels, these high strength steels are alloyed with carbide and
nitride forming elements, commonly niobium, titanium, and vanadium either singularly or in combination.
The minimum requirements only apply to the microalloy elements selected for strengthening of the steel.
A spread of 70 MPa is specified between the required minima of the yield and tensile strengths (see Table
28).
SUB Type F – Sub Type F is specified to denote sulfide inclusion controlled. Special steel making practice
is used to control the shape or the volume fraction of manganese sulfide inclusion to improve edge
stretching or bending.

Occurrence and type of material inhomogeneities (e.g. slag inclusions, segregations) should represent the
state-of-the-art technology and should be limited in order not to affect the cold forming properties.
The conformance to this specification shall be proved upon request.
The maximum permissible threshold value for banding structure is type 6.3 or 7.3 as per SEP 1520.

As the percentage of surface defects is generally higher in coil material than in sheet, the maximum
percentage of rejects must be agreed in the request for quote and the order.
The center line average height of hot rolled products must be in accordance with the latest state of
technology (Ra in the range 1- 3 µm). Differences between the strip's upside/underside are possible. If due
to the manufacturing or processing a special center line average height is required, it must be agreed on
when ordering.
For hot-dip galvanized steel strip and sheet, section 3.7.1 shall apply.
For all other kinds of strip and sheet steel listed in this standard, the material must be delivered in the oiled
condition.
A uniform protective layer of oil shall be applied to both sides of the strip so as to prevent corrosion of the
strip over a period of three months under normal packaging, shipping, loading and storage conditions. It
must be possible to remove the grease coating using slightly alkaline water-based solvents.
To achieve the above mentioned corrosion protection, the sheets have to be delivered with an oil amount
that has been adjusted to the surface finish used. The target value is max. 1.2 g/m2 if from the stamping
facility was not given any other specification.
Reference to suitable anti-corrosion oils can be found in BN 590378. If oils not listed in the present
standard are used, consultation with the Brose Group materials laboratory is mandatory.

If Brose manufactures stamped parts from the material that have safety-critical characteristics, see order
or components drawing ("D") for information on this, the semi-finished product must be marked as such
when delivered. When the order is placed, it has to be agreed on with the steel supplier which markings
are to be used for this purpose.
In the case of stamping facilities that do not belong to the Brose group, the supplier of the stamped
product bears the responsibility for correct traceability.
The requirements for packaging of products, coil dimension tolerances and coil weights depend on the
processing side and the production line and must therefore be agreed on at the time of the request for
quotation and order.
Welds within a coil are not permitted.
The manufacturer or processor must issue an inspection certificate or optional a certificate of compliance.
The inspection certificate shall show the heat analysis and the results of all tests required by the defined
specification respectively standard (mechanical properties, ….).
The inspection certificate must provide information necessary to identify the product represented; for
example the manufacturer’s name or brand, valid specification respectively standard, product designation,
grade, type or class, as applicable, and all other information necessary to completely identify the material
Material test reports for hot-dip galvanized steels shall include additionally the coating designation (type
and mass), the surface finish and the surface treatment/protection (oiled or passivated).
6 Drawing entry
The function "plot to SAP" generates the drawing entry when the material specification is correct. Training
regarding this function can be booked in BBC.
Any additional information must/can be entered manually in the box for material.
The material thickness of sheet and strip steel are mandatory information and must be noted manually.
This also applies for the material thickness tolerance, if it was defined differently from the standard.
