Topic: Evaluating Pupils’ Achievement in Social Studies

Introduction
Education is considered as an investment in human beings in terms of development of
human resources, skills, motivation, knowledge and the like. Evaluation helps to build an
educational programme, assess its achievements and improve upon its effectiveness. It serves
as an in-built monitor within the programme to review the progress in learning from time to
time. It also provides valuable feedback on the design and the implementation of the
programme. Thus, evaluation plays a significant role in any educational programme.
Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching-learning process. It helps teachers
and learners to improve teaching and learning. Evaluation is a continuous process and a
periodic exercise.
Numerous techniques should- be utilized by the teacher to evaluate pupil achievement
in the area of elementary school social Studies. No one technique is perfect. When using a
variety of technique to evaluate pupil achievement, comparisons may be made-among the
results in making social studies curriculum decisions for each pupil. One evaluation
technique can be used as a check against results from, other evaluation' techniques. Then, too,
evaluation techniques may differ from each other in use as.to what is being evaluated.
Selected evaluative techniques may center more on evaluation of pupil achievement in the
area of understandings, as compared to skills and attitudes, while-a different evaluation
technique may attempt to determine pupil achievement in die area of attitudes or skills.

Lesson objective
At the end of this topic, students will be able to
1. Define evaluation;
2. Enumerate the purpose of evaluation of pupils’ achievement;
3. Describe the different assessment techniques/tools used in Araling Panlipunan.

Presentation of Contents

EVALUATION DEFINED
 Evaluation is a process of making judgements to be used as a basis for planning. It
consists of establishing goals, collecting evidence concerning growth towards goals,
making judgements about the evidence and revising procedures and goals in the light
of judgements. It is for improving the product, the process and even the goals in
themselves. - Wiles

 Evaluation is the process of determining to what extend the educational objectives are
being realized. -Ralph Tyler

 From the stand point of classroom evaluation, it is the systematic process of


collecting, analyzing and interpreting information to determine the extent to which
pupils are achieving instructional objectives.

PURPOSE OF EVALUATION

• To discover the extend of competence


• To predict the educational practices
• To certify student’s degree, proficiency in a particular educational practice
• To appraise the status of and changes in student’s behavior
• To make provision for guiding the growth of the individual student
• To diagnose the individual students educational weakness and strength
• To assess the student’s progress from time to time and discloses student’s needs and
possibilities
• To predict the student’s future academic success or otherwise
• To provide basis for modification of curriculum and courses
• To locate areas where remedial measures are needed
• To provide basis for the introduction of experiences to meet the needs of individuals and
group of students
• Motivate students towards better attainment and growth
• Test the efficiency of teachers
• Appraise the teachers and supervisors competence
• Improve instructions, measurements and measuring devices
• Bring out the inherent capabilities of a student, such as attitudes, habits, appreciation and
understanding, manipulative skills in addition to conventional acquisition of knowledge
• Serves as method of self improvement, improving school learning relations and as a guiding
principles for the selection of supervisory techniques

COMMONLY USED TOOLS:


1. Paper and Pencil tests-objective assessment
 multiple choice items, completion type and matching items- easy to construct and
scored.
 Essay tests that call for explanations or illustrations of principles take more time to
check but are good means of assessing the kind of learning or changes in behavior
that has taken place.

2. Analyzing work products- Product assessment


 involves a meticulous examination of work results such as: collections, accomplished
records of data, projects submitted, assignment, notebooks, scrapbooks with
clippings, photographs and news special reports written for a particular topic.

3. Oral assessment
 participation in class discussions
 interviews
 oral reports

4. Formal and informal observations about students' attitude and behavior (affective
assessment)

5. Performance-based Assessment
 proficiency in performing some classroom related activities like conducting
investigations, gather data through surveys and interviews, etc.

6. Portfolio Assessment
 a method of collecting and assessing a variety of student work.
 Work Portfolio consists of the students outstanding works.
 Scrapbook type includes tests, checklists, observations and rating scales chosen both
student and teacher
 Evaluation Portfolio- a collection of work that can indicate learning such as
examination booklets, written reports and about journals.
