Choice 2 - The Role of Isolation in Literature

Prompt:

Isolation is a powerful theme in literature that has been explored in various ways across different
genres and time periods. It can symbolize loneliness, self-discovery, or even societal rejection,
and often plays a critical role in shaping a character's journey or the themes of a story.

For this essay, choose a minimum of 3 works of literature that explore the theme of isolation. In
your essay, analyze how isolation is portrayed and what role it plays in the development of the
character or the larger themes of the story. Connect this with broader universal themes.

Consider the following questions to guide your thinking (or not, it’s up to you):

• How does isolation affect the main character? Does it lead to personal growth, or does it
cause emotional or psychological damage?
• What do you think the author is trying to convey about the nature of isolation? Does the
author treat isolation as a negative or positive force, or is it more complex?
• How does the setting or environment contribute to the sense of isolation in the text?

Requirements - your essay MUST:


• Respond to the prompt with a clear thesis that presents a defensible interpretation.
• Provide evidence from at least 3 texts to support your line of reasoning - use speci c
examples from the text to support your analysis, including quotes and key scenes.
• Explain how the evidence supports your line of reasoning.
• Organize your essay clearly with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
• Cite your sources (in text) and any quotes or references in proper MLA format.
• be a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 750 words (2-3 pages).

Grading Criteria:

• Thesis & Argument: Clear, focused thesis and a well-supported argument.


• Use of Evidence: Effective use of speci c textual examples and analysis.
• Organization & Structure: Well-organized and logical progression of ideas.
• Mechanics: Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• MLA Citation: Correct in-text citations and Works Cited page.
