IV. Procedures
A. Activity
Day 1.
Motivational Activity
What is the measure of the angle from the path of the object ball to the pocket?
In billiards, the tangent line is the natural direction a sliding cue ball takes after contacting
an object ball. It is perpendicular to a line drawn through the object ball and cue ball at the
point of contact. This is a 90 degree angle from the path of the object ball to the pocket. On all
shots the cue ball will travel this path unless it is shot with follow or draw.
Can you give other real life illustrations of tangents and secants of circles?
Day 2.
Investigate Me!
In the figure below, C is the center of the circle. Use the figure to answer the questions that follow.
1. Which lines intersect circle C at two points. How about the lines that intersect the
circle
at exactly one point?
Day 3.
My Segments
Use the figure below to answer the following questions.
1. Which of the lines or line segments is a tangent? secant? chord? Name these lines or line
Segments
Day 4.
What is my value?
Solve the following equations. Answer the questions that follow.
1. 3x = 27
2. 4x = 20
3. 6x = (3)(12)
4. 63 =7x
5. (8)(15) = 10x
Questions:
a. How did you find the value of x in each equation?
b. What mathematical concepts or principles did you apply in solving the equations?
B. Analysis
1. What arc/s does each angle intercept?
2. SJ and LJ intersect at point J. How would you describe point J in relation to the given
circle?
C. Abstraction
A bicycle chain fits tightly around two gears. The smaller gear has a radius of 4 cm and the
bigger one has a radius of 8 cm. Find the distance between the centers of the two gears.
Solution:
Given line segment CD is a common tangent to both circles A and B whose length is 43 cm.
The radius of ⊙A or AC = 4cm and the radius of or BD = 8 cm
Draw line segment AE parallel to line segment CD such that ED= 4 cm.
△AEB is a right triangle, by Pythagorean Theorem
(AB) 2 = (AE) 2 + (BE)2
(AB) 2 = (43) 2 + (4)2
AB = √1849+16
AB = √1865 AB = 43.19 cm
The measure of an The true application of mathematics is in solving real life problems. You
must read and understand the problem, draw a diagram if necessary and label it, determine
the theorems to be used, write the equation and then solve.
Here are some theorems on secants and tangent of circles that can be applied in solving
real-life problems involving circles.
If two tangents intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the angle formed is
one-half the positive difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.
If two secants intersect in the interior of a circle, then angle formed is one-half the sum of the
measures of the arcs intercepted by the angle and its vertical angle.
If a secant and a tangent intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the angle
formed is one-half the positive difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.
If two secants intersect in the exterior of a circle, then the measure of the angle formed is one-
half the positive difference of the measures of the intercepted arcs.
If a secant and a tangent intersect at the point of tangency, then the measure of each angle
formed is equal to the product of the lengths of the secant segment and its external secant
segment is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.
D. Application:
Day 1
Take a picture of real objects that shows tangents or secants of circles. Formulate
a problem and show your solution.
Day 2
Formulate problems on tangent segments and secant segments on circles with
solution.
Day 3
Make a design of an arch bridge that would connect two places which are
separated by a river,
20 m wide. Indicate on the design the different measurements of the parts of the
bridge. Out of the design and the measurements of its parts, formulate problems
involving tangent and secant segments, and then solve. Use the rubric provided to
rate your work.
Day 4
Study: The Distance Formula
E. Assessment:
If SR = 10x + 7 and ER = 8x + 17, find the lengths of SR, ER, and IR.
