ENVE 102 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

2019-2020 SPRING SEMESTER

HOMEWORK #3
Assigned: March 13, 2020
Due: March 23, 2020, 17:30
(Online Submission via ODTUCLASS)

1. (25 pts) KH2BO3 is the first salt of the triprotic weak acid H3BO3. An aqueous solution
of 10-4 moles per liter of KH2BO3 is prepared. Please write down the following:
a) All chemical reaction(s)
b) List of species
c) Equilibria expression(s)
d) Mass balance equation(s)
e) Charge balance
f) Proton condition

2. (25 pts) Sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) is the third salt of the weak triprotic arsenic acid
with Ka1 of 5x10-3, Ka2 of 1.1x10-7, Ka3 of 3x10-12. Write down the following when 10-
4 M Na AsO solution is prepared.
3 4
a) All chemical reaction(s)
b) List of species
c) Equilibria expression(s)
d) Mass balance equation(s)
e) Charge balance
f) Proton condition

3. (25 pts) HOCl4 (perchloric acid) is a strong monoprotic acid. Calculate the
concentration of each species, pH and pOH of the solution when 10 -3.5 moles of HOCl4
is added into 1L of water. Show all steps in your calculations and assumptions, if any.

4. (25pts) A 10-3 M aqueous solution of KOH (potassium hydroxide) was prepared. Find
the pH and pOH of the solution as well as other unknown specie concentrations. Show
all steps in your calculations and write all assumptions, if any.

* Although we did not have a chance to solve weak acid/weak base problems in class
yet, you have all the necessary tools in your hand since we apply the same
methodological approach. You can also review Chapter 4.6 of your textbook
(Snoeyink and Jenkins, 1980) solved Examples 4-14 and 4-15. So please also try to
solve the below two questions regarding a weak acid and a weak base solution. Each
question is 20 pts bonus.

5. (20 pts) A barrel of hard cider is bought too early for a party. Bacteria in the barrel
begin to convert the ethanol (C2H5OH) present (at approximately 6% by weight) to
acetic acid (CH3COOH), a monoprotic weak acid, according to the following reaction:

O2 + C2H5OH → CH3COOH + H2O

1
By the time it is discovered that the hard cider is going bad, bacteria have converted
approximately one-third of the ethanol. Assuming the pH is determined primarily by
the acetic acid concentration, what is the pH of the cider at this time? The relevant
reaction and equilibrium constant are:

CH3COOH ⇄ H+ + CH3COO- pKa = 4.76

Note: You can assume density of cider to be equal to that of water.

6. (20 pts) Find the pH, pOH and all specie concentrations at equilibrium when 10 -2
moles of potassium nitrite, KNO2, salt of the weak monoprotic nitrous acid, HNO2 (pKa
= 4.5), is added into 1 L of water. Solve the problem using the methodology developed
in class.
