FUTURE WITH GOING TO

When do we use it?

To talk about a planned future.

Para hablar de un futuro planificado. En español equivale a “voy a”. Nota 1: Esto es algo que ya sabes
que harás, que tienes en tu cabeza. Por ejemplo, coges una bolsa y dices: “Voy a ir al supermercado”.
Es algo que harás con toda seguridad. En inglés sería:

“I’m GOING TO GO to the supermarket.”

Nota 2: En inglés hablado escucharás la expresión “gonna”. “Gonna” es lo


mismo que “Going to”.

Por ejemplo: I’m GONNA go. Me voy a ir.


Examples:
 I’m GOING TO GO to the doctor. Voy a ir al médico.
 They are GOING TO CLIMB a mountain. Ellos van a subir a la montaña.
 He’s GOING TO WORK on Monday. Va a ir a trabajar el lunes.

2.2. How do we form the future with GOING TO?

1.Affirmative sentence

 Subject + Simple Present Tense verb to be + GOING TO + verb in the infinitive + object.

Examples:
-It’s GOING TO BE easy.
-She’s GOING TO STUDY German.
-They’re GOING TO DO what they have to.

2. Negative sentence

 Subject +Simple Present Tense verb to be+ NOT+ GOING TO + verb in the infinitive + object.

Examples:
-I’m NOT GOING TO GO.
-They are NOT GOING TO DO it.
-He is NOT GOING TO AGREE.

3. Questions

 Simple Present Tense verb to be + subject + GOING TO + verb in the infinitive+ object?

Examples:
-Is he GOING TO BE a doctor?
-Are they GOING TO GO home?
– Are you GOING TO WORK?

Negative question:

 Am I not, Aren’t you, isn’t he, isn’t she, aren’t they , aren’t we+ GOING TO+ verb in the infinitive+
object+?

 Note: Always make a contraction when asking negative questions. In this case there is only one
exception, “Am I not”.

Examples:

-Aren’t you GOING TO BE worried?


-Am I not GOING TO GO?
-Isn’t she GOING TO COME?

4. Answers

 Yes + subject + AM, IS or ARE


 No + subject +AM, IS or ARE not.

Examples:
-Aren’t you GOING TO DO it? Yes, I am- No, I am not.
-Isn’t she GOING TO WORK? Yes, she is.
-No, she isn’t.

To Remember:

To form the Future with GOING TO you need use the verb to BE in the Simple
Present Tense + GOING TO + verb in the infinitive. This structure is similar to
the Spanish structure: Voy a, vas a , van a….. Example: I’m (verb to BE in
Simple Present tense) GOING TO + eat (verb in the infinitive) fish. Voy a comer
pescado.
