TITLE: IOT-ENABLED PORTABLE AIR QUALITY

MONITORING SYSTEM USING ARDUINO

Mr.G.Venkatesh , Mr.T.Pradeep kumar Dr. Navaprakash

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the need for effective air quality monitoring has become increasingly critical due
to the adverse effects of pollution on health and the environment. This project presents an
IoT-based air quality monitoring system utilizing an Arduino microcontroller, air quality sensors,
a battery power supply, an LCD display, and Ubidots IoT platform integration. The system is
designed to detect and analyze various air quality parameters, including pollutant gases such as
carbon monoxide, ammonia, and methane. Data from the air quality sensor is processed by the
Arduino, displayed on an LCD screen, and transmitted to the Ubidots platform for real-time
monitoring and data storage. To alert users of hazardous air quality levels, a buzzer is triggered
when pollutant concentrations exceed safe limits. The integration with Ubidots allows for remote
monitoring and provides users with access to real-time and historical data via a user-friendly
interface. The system is powered by a rechargeable battery, making it portable and suitable for
deployment in various indoor and outdoor environments. This project demonstrates a
cost-effective, scalable, and user-friendly solution for air quality monitoring, which could
contribute significantly to public health and awareness initiatives.

THE FIELD OF INVENTION (PACKAGING INDUSTRY)

This invention pertains to the field of environmental monitoring and Internet of Things (IoT)
technology, specifically focused on the development of a portable, low-cost air quality
monitoring system. The system integrates microcontroller-based electronics, air quality sensors,
and wireless communication to monitor and report air quality in real time. The device is designed
to measure key air quality indicators such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO),
and other harmful gases. By utilizing a battery power supply, LCD display, and IoT platform
(such as Ubidots), this invention provides continuous monitoring with immediate alerts (via
buzzer) when pollutant levels exceed safe thresholds, making it suitable for both personal and
public health applications.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Air pollution has become a critical global issue, affecting both human health and the
environment. Urbanization, industrialization, and increased vehicular emissions have
significantly contributed to the deterioration of air quality, resulting in adverse health effects
such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and even premature death. Monitoring air
quality is essential to raising awareness, informing the public, and implementing effective
pollution control strategies.

Traditional air quality monitoring systems, however, are often large, expensive, and limited to
specific locations, making it challenging for individuals and communities to access real-time air
quality information in their immediate surroundings. With the advancement of the Internet of
Things (IoT) and low-cost sensor technologies, there is an opportunity to develop portable,
affordable, and accessible air quality monitoring devices.

This invention addresses this gap by leveraging an Arduino microcontroller, air quality sensors, a
battery power supply, and an IoT platform like Ubidots. This portable device provides real-time
data on key air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile
organic compounds (VOCs), among others. The device displays current air quality readings on
an LCD screen and sends data to the IoT platform, allowing users to view historical trends and
receive alerts. A buzzer notifies users immediately when pollutant levels exceed safe limits,
making this device valuable for personal use, as well as for community health monitoring in
schools, offices, and public spaces

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This invention is an IoT-based air quality monitoring device designed to provide real-time
tracking of air pollutants in the environment. The system uses an Arduino microcontroller
combined with air quality sensors to measure concentrations of pollutants such as particulate
matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Powered by a
battery, the device is portable and operates independently, displaying air quality data on an LCD
screen for easy access.
In addition to the local display, the device connects to an IoT platform like Ubidots, where it
transmits data wirelessly for remote monitoring. Users can view current and historical data trends
via the IoT platform and receive alerts when pollution levels reach hazardous thresholds. A
buzzer is included to provide immediate audio alerts for unsafe air quality, ensuring timely
notification and awareness. This invention aims to offer an accessible, low-cost solution for
continuous air quality monitoring, suitable for personal, community, and educational use.
