Unit 3: Chain Rule (part 2)

Let 𝒇(𝒙) and 𝒈(𝒙) be differentiable functions such that the following values are true.

1. If ℎ(𝑥 ) = 𝑓*𝑔(𝑥 ),, what is ℎ- (3) ?

2. If 𝑝(𝑥 ) = 𝑔(2𝑥 ), what is 𝑝- (1) ?

3. If 𝑞(𝑥 ) = 3𝑓 (𝑥 ) + 𝑔(𝑥), what is 𝑞 - (4) ?

4. Find the derivative of each of the following functions.

789 = ;78=
a. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 67 :8; < b. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = > 7?; c. ℎ(𝑥) = √𝑥 ; − 3𝑥 + 1

C 7
d. 𝑔(𝑥 ) = √9𝑥 ; + 4 e. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥√1 − 𝑥 ; f. 𝑦 = √7 :

5. Find the value of the derivative of the function at the given point.
E
a. 𝑔(𝜃) = sin; (2𝜃) when 𝜃 = 𝜋
G

N
b. 𝑓 (𝜃) = sin 2𝜃 cos 2𝜃 when 𝜃 = G

6. The graph of the function 𝑓(𝑥 ) = √25 − 𝑥 ; Is pictured to the right. It

is the top half of a circle with a radius 5, centered at the origin. (Note
the equation of the function as this will come back in the spring!)

a. Find the values of 𝑓 (3) and 𝑓 - (3).

b. Find the equation of the line tangent to the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) when
𝑥 = 3. Then graph this line on the graph of 𝑓(𝑥 ).

c. Find the equation of the normal line to the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) when
𝑥 = 3. Then graph this line on the graph of 𝑓(𝑥 ).

E
7. Super bonus: At what value(s) of x does the graph of ℎ(𝑥 ) = ; 𝑥 ; √2𝑥 + 1 have a horizontal tangent?
