Arithmetic progressions
Arithmetic Progressions(AP) refers to sequences of
numbers in which the difference between any two
consecutive numbers is equal.
Arithmetic Progressions help us to understand
number sequences with the help of patterns.
Ex: AP = 2,4,6,8,10,12,… , is an Arithmetic Progression
with common difference 2.
Terms associated with Arithmetic
progressions
Let us consider an AP = 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,…21.
The first term of an AP is called ‘a’. It then continues as
a,a2,a3,a4,a5,a6,a7,….
In this AP ‘a’(The First Term) is 1.
The common difference of an AP is called ‘d’. ‘d’ is
found by subtracting any term from its succeeding
term.
Ex: a2-a , a4-a3 , an-an-1, etc.
In this AP ‘d’(Common Difference) is a2-a1 i.e. 3-1= 2.
Terms Associated with Arithmetic
Progressions
‘n’ refers to the number of terms in an AP.
In this AP, n = 11.
The nth term of an AP refers to the an term.
In this AP, the 11th term or a11 term is 21
‘Sn’ refers to the sum of all the ‘n’ numbers of the AP.
How to find nth term of an ap
We can find the nth term of an AP by using the formula:
an= a + (n-1)d
Let us consider the AP = 1,4,7,10,13,…
Suppose we need to find the 10th term of this AP, then
we need to substitute n=10 in the formula
How to find nth term of an ap
The first term ,a=1 and the common difference, d=3 .
a10= 1+ (10-1)*3
a10=1+ 9*3
a10=1+ 27
a10= 28
Sum of first ‘n’ terms of an ap
We can find the Sn i.e. or the sum of terms of an AP by
using the formula:
Sn=(n/2)[2a+(n-1)d]
Let us consider the AP= 1,2,3,4,…98,99,100.
We need to find the sum of all the terms in from 1 to
100 i.e we need to find S100.
We need to substitute the values of a=1,d=1,n=100, in
the given formula.
Sum of first ‘n’ terms of an ap
Sn =(100/2)[2(1)+(100-1)*1]
Sn =(50)[2+99]
Sn =(50)[101]
Sn= 5050
This is how we can find the sum of the terms of an AP .
