FAMILY STRUCTURE AND LEGACIES


 Family comes from the Latin word familia which means group of people living in the
household.
 Family could be related by blood, by birth, or by other relationship.
 Family is the basic unit of society. It is the smallest organization in the community.
It is said to be a group of individual living together in one household.
 Nuclear Family It is also known as “conjugal” or “traditional” family, consisting
of married couples and their offspring.
 Extended Family These relatives typically live together, and all share daily
household duties.
 Step Family It is also known as “blended” family because two families were
combined.
 Gay or Lesbian Family A family wherein one or both parents have a different sexual
orientation and part of the LGBT community.
 Foster Family A family includes parent who serves as a temporary guardian for one
or more children to whom they may or may not be biologically related.
 Trans-racial Adoptive Family A family wherein parents adopted a child with a
different race
 Childless Family Married couple without children
 Migrant Family It is a family who settles together in a different place
 There are also people that act parent roles in caring and protecting children’s overall
well-being. They are known as “guardians”.
 No matter who we are, where we live, we have one thing in common—heritage.
 The Emotional Legacy In order to prosper, children need an enduring sense of
security and stability nurtured in an environment of safety and love.
PERSONS AND CAREERS
 Occupation is defined as the similar work for which people have similar
responsibilities and for which they develop a common set of skills and knowledge.
 Job is a position an individual holds doing specific duties.
 John Holland has theory which is Holland’s Career Typology wherein it is a widely
used to connect personality types and career fields.
 Life Roles (Super’s Lifespan Theory) directly addresses the fact that we each play
multiple roles in our lives and that these roles change over the course of our lives.
 Skills and Abilities considering your skills and abilities how they may fit a particular
occupation comes out of one of the earliest career development fields.
 Holland’s Career Typology This theory establishes a classification system that
matches personality characteristics and personal preferences to job characteristics.
 Childhood Fantasies it may have helped shape how you taught about careers then, as
well as later in life.
 Gender both men and women experienced career-related stereotypes.
 Social and Economic Conditions our ability to meet the monetary demands of
formal education and training impacts this career factor.
 Krumboltz’s Social Learning and Planned Happenstance Theories This theory
address factors related to our experiences with others and in previous work situations.
CAREER PATHWAYS
 Realistic (Do’er) Prefers physical activities that require skill, strength, and
coordination. e.g., Engineering, Farmer, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
 Investigative (Thinker) Prefers working with theory and information,
thinking, organizing and understanding. e.g., Lawyer, Scientist, Professor.
 Artistic (Creator) Prefers creative, original, and unsystematic activities
that allow creative impressions. e.g., Painter, Musician, and Writer or
Composer.
 Social (Helper) Prefers activities that involve helping, healing, or
developing others. e.g., Counsel, Psychiatrist, Doctors, and Teachers.
 Enterprising (Persuader) Prefers competitive environments, leadership,
influence, selling and status. e.g., Recruiter, Bank Manager, and Sales
Manager.
 Conventional (Organizer) prefers precise, rule-regulated, orderly, and
unambiguous activities. e.g., Book Keeper, Accountant, and Clerk etc.
