Adverbs

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or


other adverbs.

It usually answers when, where, how,


and how often.
Examples:

Jenny does her project neatly.

We went upstairs and unpacked.

We bought the books yesterday.

I rarely disobey my parents.


Kinds of Adverbs
I. Adverb of Manner
Adverbs of manner describe how an action is
done.

Examples:
The two boys raced excitedly to the park.

The wind blew strongly.

The sun was shining brightly.


Most adverbs of manner end with the
suffix –ly. This suffix is usually added
to adjectives.

ADJECTIVE ADVERB
slow slowly
graceful gracefully
honest honestly
careful carefully
reckless recklessly
Not all adverbs of manner end in –ly. Read
the examples below.

1. Ferdie studies well.


How does Ferdie study? (well)

2. Jimmy runs fast.


How does Jimmy run? (fast)

3. They work hard.


How do they work? (hard)
Adverbs of manner are placed before or after
the verbs they describe in the sentences.

1. The sun was shining brightly.

2. Jonathan diligently studies his lessons.

3. Ricky ran fast.

4. The man skillfully laid the stones.


Adverbs of manner can be placed after the
object of the sentence.

1. Sofia did her work well.

2. Rico climbed the stairs fast.

3. He threw the ball quickly.
